*Call to Worship (Responsive) Greg Burkes

One: The Lord has gained renown by His wonderful deeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful.

He is ever mindful of His covenant.

All: He has shown his people the power of His works in giving them their heritage. One: Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations,

All: Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world.

From everlasting to everlasting You are God.

*Procession of the Tartans Highland Cathedral George Grinton, Piper

*The Blessing (Unison) Greg Burkes

On behalf of all Scots away from Scotland, and in the name of all the Scottish clansfolk that are here

represented, we present these tartans before Almighty God in appreciation of our heritage; and we ask his

blessings upon these, his humble servants.

O Lord, you have promised that in all places where two or three have gathered in your name that you will be

there with your Servants to bless them; fulfill now your promise and make us joyful in our prayer, so that our

worship this morning, being offered in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, and by the guidance of your Holy

Spirit, may be acceptable to you.

Bless, we pray, these tartans so that they may be for us and for all people a token of the faith of our

forebears, a sign of our present service to you, and a reminder of how faithful you have always been to our

ancestors and how faithful you remain even now to us.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

*Prayer of Confession (Unison) Erin Gaston

O God, Lord of all ages, you are the author of the story. In the fullness of your imagination, born from your

unending love, secured in your steadfast faithfulness, you have set a path for us; carved an intended narrative

for us. But we have sought to write our own tale. We have neglected and ignored those faithful chapters that

have proceeded this present moment so that we might do our own thing. In the process, we have forgotten

where we have come from and have lost sight of your promises for tomorrow. Forgive us for our past and

present wanderings. Holy God we ask that you would help us to remember our intended part in the story and

thus find, once more, our right place with you, now and always.

(Time for Silent Confession)

One: Trusting in the hope of God’s Word, the people said,

All: “Amen.”

*Assurance of Pardon

*The Gloria Patri Hymn #581

Passing of the Peace (11:00) (Responsive)

One: Since Christ has extended to us the peace of God, let us, as his disciples, spread his peace to others.

The peace of Christ be with you.

All: And also with you.

One: Let us exchange signs of Christ’s peace with one another.

Kirkin’ O’ The Tartan - It’s Origins

The History...The ceremony of Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan is of American origin, though

based on Scottish history and legend. After Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Scottish forces

were defeated by the English at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Scotland once again

came under British rule. To control the Scots, an Act was passed that forbade the

carrying of arms and the wearing of kilts or tartan which represented Scottish heritage.

Orders were given for British troops to kill any person dressed in or displaying the

tartan.

As The Legend Goes...This Act prompted the stubborn Scots to secretly carry with

them a piece of their tartan as they went to the Kirk. The minister then slipped a

blessing (a Kirkin’) into the service for the tartans. The prohibition against tartan lasted

for nearly 50 years. When at last repealed, the Church of Scotland celebrated with a

Service of Family Covenant, at which time the tartan of each family was offered as a

covenant expression for the Lord’s blessing.

The First Kirkin’...The Saint Andrew’s Society of Washington, DC held the first

Kirkin’ during the early years of World War II. The late Dr. Peter Marshall, an eloquent

Scot, then Chaplain of the US Senate as well as a pastor, led the service in 1943,

choosing “Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan” for the title of his sermon. He had preached many

sermons in support of the British War Relief and the Scottish Clans Evacuation Plan.

His sermons were so popular that a request was made for their publication, with the

proceeds designated for war relief programs. As the war continued, the DC St.

Andrew’s Society continued to hold prayer services for British subjects. These became

known as Kirkin’s.

The Service...The worship service is of traditional content, using much of the Church

of Scotland form. Central to its theme is the presentation of various tartans - through

flags and the wearing of tartans - for a blessing. The kirkin’ is intended to encourage all

participants to reflect with Thanksgiving on their ecclesiastical heritage, and to

celebrate God’s grace poured out for all generations and to offer thanks for the gift of

family.

Kirkin’ O’ The Tartan - It’s Origins

The Beadle...During the middle ages and through much of the Reformation,

ownership of Bibles was rare among the common people. The Pulpit Bible of each kirk

was a treasured possession. The value of the sacred text and the danger of theft led to

the establishment of a special lay office within the kirk known as “The Beadle.” The

Beadle began each Worship Service by carrying the Scriptures into the Sanctuary. The

congregation would stand in respect for the Word of God. The Beadle then returned to

the entrance and escorted the minister to the pulpit. The Beadle would remove the Bible

from the kirk for safekeeping following the Service.

Tartans and Plaid...Perhaps no symbol is more associated with Scotland and

Scottish traditions than the colorful traditions associated with highland dress. The

tradition of the Tartan is an old one, and there are many references to it in early Scottish

literature. The ancient Tartan was described as “Chequered” or “striped” or “sundrie

coloured.” When we refer to the sett of a Tartan, we mean the pattern, and a length of

Tartan is made up of one sett repeated over and over again until the desired length is

reached. For many centuries, Tartans formed part of the everyday dress of the Highland

people and it was there its use continued and developed until it became recognized as a

symbol of clan kinship. Tartans are still developing and being registered with the

Scottish Tartan Society. A red, white, and blue Tartan was developed for the United

States Bicentennial in 1976.

Bagpipe...The bagpipe is regarded as the national musical instrument of Scotland.

Each clan had its own bagpiper and its frame was based to some extent on the bagpiper’s

ability. They were first used to intimidate their enemies.

Mrs. Dixie Lewis...Was very instrumental in designing the SAPC tartan. She

provided a suggested pattern with the colors representing things of importance to our

church. The meanings of the colors are: sand is for the Holy Land where the Patron

Saint of Scotland lived, for the Scottish beach where his bones were found, and for the

sand of South Carolina. Red orange is for the sunrises of the day. Green is for the pines

and palms of South Carolina and the Holy Land. Blue is for the Atlantic Ocean and

Mediterranean Sea.

A Great Way You Can Help a Hurting Friend

Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative who is going through a

difficult time? Here's a great way you can help them--tell them about our Stephen

Ministry! Stephen Ministers are members of our congregation who have received

special training to provide high quality, confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to

people who are grieving the loss of a loved one, coping with a cancer diagnosis,

going through a divorce or separation, battling a chronic illness (or caring for a

spouse or parent who is chronically ill), experiencing a great deal of stress, facing

the loss of a job -- or encountering any of countless other life challenges.

Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receivers to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional

and spiritual support. (Males are matched with males, and females are matched with females.) The caring

relationship lasts for as long as the person needs care. It's free, and it's a powerful way you can help a

hurting friend.

To learn how to connect someone you know with a Stephen Minister, talk with our Stephen Ministry Leader

Lisa Lader (642-6840 or cell 439-2004), Dr. Christopher Crotwell, Associate Pastor Erin Gaston or Parish

Associate Rev. Judy Bowling (648-9574). Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!

My dear SAPC Family,

It has been humbling and overwhelming since July and I thank my church family, including; all pastors,

staff, Barnabas, Diaconate, APNC, Stewardship and all my brothers and sisters in Christ for the care you

have provided. Many stepped up in various committees I am a member of and carried on so graciously and

wonderfully.

My family, friends and I have been astounded by your prayers, cards, expressed concerns and gifts of

comfort. It only confirms I am in the perfect place. Please know I am very well and had a soul-mate who

knew God would provide YOU...to pick me up, encourage, assist if necessary and bless me with your love.

I continue to feel your love each moment of every day.

I invite you to join us for a Memorial Service to Chuck's life on 11/25 at 2:00 PM at the 16th hole of Aiken

Golf Club. Dress is casual with 'Plus Fours' welcomed! A reception will immediately follow at Newberry

Hall. If weather is inclement, the service will begin at 2:30 PM in Newberry Hall. The reception is a

CELEBRATION - no tears, just joy!

To those who will not be able to gather with us, the service will be video-taped and posted online so you can

virtually share afterwards.

The words seem so inadequate, but thank you and God bless.

With a grateful heart,

Lynn Woodard
