Varsity lacrosse player, Chris Stueber, plays midfield for Char-lotte Christian School. The 18 year old son of Mary Stueber has attained a .0 GPA throughout his high school years. Last year, Chris made the Cum Laude Honor Roll and was selected 2nd Team All County. The senior has committed to continue his education and lacrosse career at Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland. Let’s go Beyond the Game with Chris to learn more!

What is your favorite part of being on the team?“My favorite part of being on the Charlotte Christian Lacrosse Team is being able to play with my friends and bond with them. Being on the team is also a great way to learn good life lessons such as following orders, working with others, and having discipline.”

What is your role as a leader on the team?“I try to be a leader on my team. A lot of my teammates look up to me and expect a lot out of me, especially the younger guys on the team.”

What are your personal goals and team goals for the season?“My personal goals for this season are to have the best season of my high school career, including scoring, assisting, and middy defense. I also want to be the best leader I can be for my fellow teammates. Our goal as a team this

year is to stay focused, work harder than everyone else, and win a state championship for the first time in our program’s short history.”

Why did you choose Mount St. Mary’s University to con-tinue your education and your lacrosse career?“I chose to continue my education at Mount St. Mary’s because it is a great school academically and I feel that it is a great fit for me. Education is important to me and that’s a big reason why I decided to commit there. From a lacrosse standpoint, the program is growing and getting better every year due to dedi-cated players and coaches. Coach Gravante continues to bring in great recruits, giving The Mount the best possibility to excel at the Division 1 level. I am excited to be apart of this team and cannot wait to get up there and start working.”

What are you most looking forward to in playing la-crosse at Mount St. Mary’s?“I’m excited to play for Coach Gravante and the assistant coaches, Coach Browning and Coach McIntee. All three coaches have a huge lacrosse IQ and will be able to help me grow my game. Also, The Mount signed with Under Armour this off-season so they will be getting a lot of new gear, which is exciting.”

South Mecklenburg High School senior swimmer Noah Cahan has signed to continue his career with the UNC-Wilm-ington Seahawks. The 17 year old son of Josh and Jenny Cahan was faced with the decision of choosing swimming over soccer at age 10 and he hasn’t looked back since. Let’s go Beyond the Game with Noah Cahan to learn more.

When did you begin to swim competi-tively?“My swimming interest started with my neighborhood summer league team, (BWE Dolphins) then a few years later I joined a swim club at the age of 10. At the end of middle school, I was faced with the decision to choose between taking my swimming to the next level or continue playing my other sport, which was soccer. Big factors in my decision were that I had closer friends in swimming than soccer and I enjoyed push-ing myself in the pool.”

What are your best events?“200 Fly, 200 IM, and 200 Free. During high school meets I swim the 100 Fly, 200 IM, and some relays.”

What is your top event?“My overall best event is the 200 Fly because this was my first qualifying event for Junior Nationals and I was also able to final in this event at Juniors.”

Can you describe your training schedule?“My training schedule in-cludes a total of eight prac-tices per week. Two days a week include doubles and I have weightlifting and dry land several times throughout the week.”

What are your top three swimming achievements?“My decision to swim for the UNCW Se-ahawks starting Fall 2016, contributing to the 2015 Winter Junior National Champions Team, (combined) and being a key part of the South Meck Swim and Dive Team where I am also one of the five senior male captains for the 2015-2016 season.”

How well do you perform in the class-room?“Currently I have a 3.9 GPA. I have taken five AP classes throughout my time at South Meck. The rest of my core classes and some electives were taken with honors credit.”

Community Service Heroes Award Recognizing Actions in Support of

Individuals, Community and the Environment

www.QueenCityOnline.com

Providene High School senior baseball player Matt Kagan has been named the Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances Community Heroes Award Winner. Matt, the son of Bruce and Cheryl Kagan has been very active in community service and volunteer activities throughout his high school career. Starting in his freshman year, he became involved with an organization called The Friendship Circle. The Friendship Circle matches local teens with children who have special needs and supports them in creating friendships that may be difficult for them in the “real world.” From the start, Matt felt a special bond with the children in this organization as he participated every Sunday afternoon in different fun activities with his “friend,” a blind boy also named Matthew. Enter-ing his junior year, Matt proactively formed the organization’s first teen board and was named its first president. Since forming the board, volunteer partici-pation has increased greatly, activities have become more creative, and attendance at the annual fundraising dinner doubled bringing in a record amount of donations to support the organization. Last summer, Matt also helped his little friend Matthew attend a regular day camp by acting as his “shadow” through-out the day so young Matthew could participate with all of the other kids seamlessly.

Matt is looking forward to his senior season of baseball for the defending state champion Panthers. He hopes to be as effective as he was before having to undergo Tommy John surgery. His involvement with the Friendship Circle has given Matt the strength he needs to know that wherever baseball may or may not taking him, he has been a success in high school by helping others. Baseball will not define the person that Matt is becoming through his caring work with others in need. Matt credits his parents influence for helping him to success and to becoming a great person on and off the field. Matt has also been a strong foundation for his parents, including his father who has fought Leukemia four times in his life. Inside the classroom, Matt is an A/B student and preparing to make his college decision between Indiana University, UNC Wilmington, and USC. Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances salutes Matt Kagan for his continued commitment to serving others in need in our community.

The 9th Annual Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Awards Banquet was held February 6th. The event proudly recognizes the top baseball and softball players across the Greater Charlotte area. A sold out crowd attended the event to honor these outstanding young men and women.

Over the last eight years past award winners have included current major league players Corey Seager and Richie Shaffer, in addition to top professional prospects such as Trent Thornton, Brian Holberton, Max Wotell, Brett Austin and Ryan Butler. Past softball winners such as Kalie Lang, Constance Orr, Leah Murray and Jen Rosene have gone on to have outstanding college careers.

All finalists below should be considered as winners for reaching the pinnacle of success in the community. I wish everyone a very successful spring baseball and softball season.Award winners are noted in bold.
