Religion The Southern Colonies were not dominated

by a single religion which gave way to more liberal attitudes and some religious freedom.

Religion Primarily Anglican

and Baptist churches throughout all of the southern colonies

Religion Maryland was established as a refuge

for English Catholics by Cecilius Calvert, also known as Lord Baltimore.

Econonmy Mercantilism was

very prevalent in the southern colonies

Social Structure

Slave labor used throughout the south. Although not the large scale plantations that we think of with the Civil War.

Slave Use in the South Abundance of land and

a lack of workers led to a need for slaves

Indentured servants and slave labor became necessary for plantation owners

Slavery was legal in all the colonies by 1700

Intellectual There were no

public schools, and very few private schools available.

Rich families would hire private tutors to come to the house or plantation school and teach children
