mansion that houses SVC today, was the maker of the very

practical “Lightning” fruit jar (among many other things)

—a breakthrough in food storage at a time when there were

no refrigerators, supermarkets or zip lock bags.

courses each year—more than enough to fill your schedule.

On the off chance that there’s something you want that we

don’t offer, SVC students can enroll in courses at nearby

colleges at no additional cost. Our reciprocity agreements

MOST UNDERGRADUATES IN THIS COUNTRY EXPERIENCE education from the back of a big lecture hall. Wethink about education differently at Southern Vermont College. Instead of large lecture-based courses, weoffer smaller classes, usually with an average of 16 students—large enough to have many interesting pointsof view, but still small enough so that you’ll know everyone fairly well by the end of the semester. A THEMED LECTURE SERIES

We don’t all learn in boxes. What makes education useful is being

able to connect the dots. That’s the idea behind SVC’s annual

lecture series. Speakers from very diverse fields come to campus

and speak on the same theme: The Lessons of Leadership Series,

for example.

FROM THE TOP

From some of our classrooms, you can see the town of Bennington

below. The third largest town in Vermont, Bennington is filled

with interesting things to do—from movie theaters and museums

to clubs and eateries. SVC students also enjoy internships and

part-time jobs in the area medical center, clinics, courts, law offices,

and technology firms, and the surrounding area offers some of

Vermont’s best hiking, skiing, snowboarding and fly-fishing.

ROVING PROFESSORS

Change it up. Shift perspectives. Think in different ways. To help you figure out what this really means

and why it’s important, SVC selects a few “roving professors” who teach in a variety of courses for

short periods of time. Experts and scholars, they cross disciplines and bring new points of view,

lead projects and join you in discussion. A visiting pharmacology professor might drop in on nursing,

psychology or computer science classes, while an artist might engage students in mathematics,

photojournalism or history.

MAD HATTERS

The Mad Hatters are SVC’s student drama organization. They stage regular perform-ances in the Everett Theatre that draw notonly crowds of students, faculty and staff,but also area residents.

CORE REQUIREMENTS

Yes, we have a few and they’ll definitelychange your point of view. In addition tocourses in your major, every BA/BS candidatetakes basic courses in the humanities, historyand politics, environmental issues, naturalsciences, philosophy and ethics, and the social sciences. We also require courses incomputing, economics and effective speak-ing. The result is a well-rounded liberal artsbackground that gives you the tools andknowledge to be part of the critical issues ofour time—whatever career path you choose.

STUDENT SERVICE

The Student Activities Squad (SAS) is one ofSVC’s most popular student organizations,and provides opportunities to give a littleback. Students work with the Coordinator ofStudent Programs to develop an array of activities to enhance the college experience:club sports, midnight bowling, comedians,live music, off-campus trips, service learningprojects and more.

WEEKEND FUN AND RELAXATION

When you have some of the world’s best skiing and snowboarding less than an houraway (18 resorts within 90 minutes), it’s hard not to get caught up in the fun.

AT EASE

What do SVC students do for fun? If you like your fun

organized, you can find all kinds of activities organized

by the residence halls, from movie nights to day trips.

SVC students are also just as likely to hang out in small

groups in each other’s rooms. If you like your fun on a

larger scale, check out the campus calendar for info on

trips to Boston to see the Red Sox, all-campus parties

and celebrations and special events.

THE SUITE LIFE

SVC students enjoy suite life in our residence halls. A Community Advisor helps out with any

residence life issues and acts as a big brother or sister. The residence complexes also offer laundry

facilities, cable television service, in-room Internet access and 24-hour computer labs. New

students are required to live on campus; older students may eventually choose off-campus living.

the trails on their mountain bikes and rock climbing and hiking in the Green Mountains.
