Presidents ReportJune 28, 2010From the desk of . . .The ChiefHello Everyone,

As always, I hope this newsletter finds all in goodhealth and spirits.

As many of you are aware I made a run for the statepresidents position of ABATE of Florida, Inc. Al-though my attempt was not a victory for me I do feelthat the challenge to the office was no doubt a vic-tory for ABATE as the current state board was made

aware that there are. Many chapters out there thatare dissatisfied with the current administration, thatin itself is a Step in the right direction for some inputfrom all the chapters statewide. We had our elections at the Southwest chapter thispast meeting, Wayne Cerra, who was running forchapter president asked if I would consider stayingon as president after losing my bid for the statepresidents position. I told him we would leave it upto the membership. We called for a vote of confi-

dence and were elected president and vice presi-dent. I look forward to working with Wayne and feelhe will be a tremendous asset to the chapter. Therewere a number of new people who stepped up and Iam extremely appreciative and will do my absolutebest to get this new team working like the well oiledmachine that we at the Southwest chapter have hadin the past. My most sincere and heartfelt thanks toour previous board of directors, and welcomeaboard to you new folks, welcome to the Southwestfamily. One of the positions that was up for election wasmembership with our long time membership directorTrudy Rabell having stepped down due to personalreasons. Trudy a great big thank you for all that youhave done for the Southwest chapter over the yearsand I just want you to know you will be missed inDeland this year we love you Trudy.Speaking of Deland we need confirmation on all that

plan to attend ASAP please call me or Wayne if youplan on attending. I do expect all of the new boardmembers to attend.Next for the Southwest chapter is our 5 Star event itwill be the end of July at the Corkscrew CountryStore, and anyone that was at the meeting knows Ireally want that trophy for biggest attending chapterthis yearso come on guys lets make this hap-pen, it is most definitely possible.Taylor Musburger, deserves the respect and admi-ration of the entire Southwest chapter, If you re-member Taylor, he was our webmaster at first andhe was minding his own business when all of a sud-den our newsletter editor and his lovely bride wereinvolved in a crash on the beach. Well, becauseRob and Lyn both needed some recovery time, Tay-lor, not only stepped up to fill the recently vacated

position of newsletter editor but also took on the po-sition of chapter photographer, to fill the positionvacated by Lyn. So now he is the webmaster, pho-tographer, and the newsletter editor, well as if thatwasnt enough for him to do, a couple months laterour VP had to step down for personal reasons andguess who jumped in to coverThats right it wasTaylor to the rescue again, I just want to say you gotto love this guy I know I do and Taylor, I thank youfor all of your effort and dedication to the Southwest

chapter you truly are an asset and we are gratefulto have you on board. By the way folks, Taylor hasstayed on as webmaster, the original job that hesigned on for and if you havent checked it out yetyou need to go to the Southwest website as he doesa tremendous job with it. In my opinion its one of thebest sites in the state. In closing, I want to welcome all the new people tothe board and let you all know that it will not only bemy pleasure but also my honor to work with such a

great bunch of folks. Remember, your president isonly as good as the people that surround him, nodifferent than the last board, its you folks that makeme look good..thank you to the past board of di-rectors and thanks in advance to the newly electedboard. LETS ROLL

    Ride Safe,

    Dear Fellow ABATE Members,

Different Thoughts about Changing myMotorcycle Oil, Today

Today, is the day I'm planning on changing the oilin our motorcycle, among the other chores that

will also bring me to a gasoline station. Nor-mally, these are activities that you and I wouldn'thave much thought about. However, we live onthe Gulfcoast with the unprecedented and ongoingmassive oilspill from the Deepwater Horizon well. And, yes-terday there was the slight exhortation of concern/ panic/doomsday thinking regarding this event, from someone in our church service. Therefore, my thoughts about these seeminglyroutine chores, take on added contemplation.

Thoughts of oil reminded me about an article,Kathy and I wrote several years ago, on how oilaffects the ease of running our motorcycles andhow another type of oil can be used in appointingthose in high positions and in healing . In part wesaid,

"Almost every biker knows how important

oil is to his/her motorcycle. Without the oil in the

engine, there would be a lot of friction, freeze-up,

and it would be impossible to empower the motor-

cycle without it. You do know that gasoline (the

ultimate power for your machines) comes from

oil, right? Many times, a mechanic who is install-

ing internal parts in a new engine or an older en-

gine he is repairing, will bathe the parts in oil

before putting the engine back together. Oil is

necessary for the parts to do their work and towork together.

In Biblical times, oil was used in the anoint-

ing of Kings and Priests to install them into their

positions. Oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirits em-

powerment for them to do their work. Todays

believers also have the promise of this anointing.

It would be impossible for them to function as

Christians without the Holy Spirit. They would be

subject to friction, freeze-up, and would not have

the power to be successful in their faith. Oil was

also medicinal. It was carried by ancient peopleto sooth the skin and, to cover skin scrapes and

abrasions. In Luke 10:34, the Good Samaritan

treated the man who fell prey to the thieves by

pouring oil into his wounds. Oil is often used as a

base for applying healing salves and lotions.

The scripture for anointing of oil that we

use for the sick, comes from James 5:14-16, 14Is

any one of you sick? He should call the elders of

the church to pray over him and anoint him with

oil in the name of the Lord.15And the prayer of-

fered in faith will make the sick person well; theLord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will

    be forgiven.16

    Therefore confess your sins to

each other and pray for each other so that you

may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is

powerful and effective. How can we make sense of all this? How can weput it into perspective?God allows all things which happen and affect us,to sift through His hands for a reason. Manytimes, we don't understand why, especially when

the seemingly tragic event affects us, directly. His word tells us that He has all things under con-trol. If things were perfect here on earth, thenwould we not have a desire to be with God foreternity? Would we not have a desire to see theLord return for the Second Coming? Can some-thing like the concern over the continuous oilspill in the Gulf or another unpleasant experience be turned around? Can we use it to help us un-

    LEGISLATIVE

    REPORT

    July 2010

    Good Morning Freedom Fighters:

I would like to thank Sharon Merchantfor taking the time out of her busy campaignschedule to be our guest speaker at our Maychapter meeting.

Sharon is one of the Republican candi-dates running for the Senate District 27 seat, which is being vacated by State Senator DaveAronberg, who is running for State AttorneyGeneral.

Sharon is a former Legislator and

served 8 years in the Florida House of Repre-sentatives. She says that she opposes manda-tory helmet laws for adults and supports ourstiffer penalties legislation.Even though she maintains a home in WestPalm Beach, she told me that she just recently bought a home in Lehigh Acres. This makesher the only candidate running for Sen. Dis-trict 27 that actually lives in Lee County. But rather than trying to tell you all about her,Ill let her speak for herself:

Sharon Merchant Campaign Update:It is hard to believe that I have been on

the campaign trail for the last 12 months. Dur-ing that time I have met thousands of con-cerned Republicans in Lee, Charlotte, Glades,Hendry and Palm Beach counties.

While walking neighborhoods, I metpeople who deeply love Florida but worry thattheir quality of life is eroding.

While politicians in Tallahassee fightover American Express cards, Floridians are

fighting to keep their jobs make ends meet, gettheir children in good schools, protect prop-erty values and keep their homes safe.

More than 3,000 of you signed peti-tions to place my name on the Aug. 24 Repub-lican Primary ballot for state Senate, District27. Now, I need your financial support aswell.

A contribution to Sharon Merchantmeans you want someone in Tallahassee whowill not simply follow the dictates of politicalleaders those who are more concerned aboutstaying in power than solving the many prob-lems that confront us.

As a small business owner, I under-stand the concerns of employers and employ-ees. I understand the impact of lost income ona family. I understand the challenges of em-ployers who struggle to keep their doors open.

Your choice in this election is clear. Ioffer you a depth of experience and independ-ence that is vital to ensuring that we are heardin Tallahassee. As a business owner who isdeeply involved with my family and commu-nity, I bring to Tallahassee a conservative,

common sense approach to issues. We need someone in Tallahassee whoknows how it works. We need someone whohas the courage to tell lobbyists and specialinterests NO when all they want is toprofit off the backs of Florida taxpayers.

I promise that when I go to Tallahassee,Republicans in District 27 will have a strong, experienced voice. You will have someonewho will speak out against illegal immigra-tion, higher taxes, and overbearing govern-

ment. Your contribution to Sharon Merchantmeans you want to elect someone who is inde-pendent, a creative thinker and a conservativeRepublican who believes in less governmentand less taxes.

If you would like to make a contribu-tion to Sharons campaign, send a check to:Sharon Merchant Campaign, P.O. Box 615,West Palm Beach, Fl. 33409, or 3606 4thStreet SW, Lehigh Acres, Fl. 33976. If you

would like to get involved in her campaign, you can log onto her Web site at:www.SharonMerchant.com ore-mail her campaign at:[email protected], orcall (239) 368-5727.

From ABATE of Florida, Inc.:Darrin "Scribe" Brooks,State Legislative Trustee,

    Hey Everyone,

There have been some questions about the

new vertical license plate amendment that wasattached to HB 971 by Rep. Aubuchon fromCape Coral. I admit that this amendmentslipped passed me during the final days whenmy attention was focused on the stiffer penal-ties bill and everything that was happeningaround that. Aubuchon added an amendmentto his bill that states:"Alternatively, a license tag for a motorcycleor moped for which the numbers and lettersread from top to bottom may be af-

fixed perpendicularly to the ground, providedthat the registered owner of the motorcycle ormoped maintains a prepaid toll account ingood standing and a transponder associatedwith the prepaid toll account is affixed to themotorcycle or moped."I contacted his office to inquire why thisamendment was added and I was told that the problem with vertical tags was that the tolllane cameras could not read them correctlyenough if someone ran a toll booth without

paying.Aubuchon compromised by stating that bikeswith vertical plates MUST have a prepaidtransponder. This Bill was signed by the Gov-ernor last month.I spoke to Doc and he was aware of theamendment and tried to get it removed, but Aubuchon was in favor of the amendmentand would not remove it.Here is a link to the newest Motorcycle road-way survey. Please pass this around and letyour voice be heard on road conditions. The address for the current motorcyclist sur-vey is shown below:URL to MAC survey:http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TWBTTY8Florida Cabinet races began taking shapeWednesday with the entry of three new con-tenders for attorney general and a candidate

added in each of the contests for chief finan-cial officer and agriculture commissioner.Democrat Alex Sink, the partys presumptivenominee for governor, topped qualifyingweeks midpoint by filing her candidate pa-pers and holding a brief rally with supporters

outside the states Division of Elections office.Sink opted for a `ripped-from-the-headlinesapproach to kicking off her campaign, sayingshes drawing strength from those affected bythe gulf oil spill. They deserve a leader that will stand up forthem, Sink said of gulf residents.Others making official their candidacies took alower key approach, which included Lt. Gov.Jeff Kottkamp and Hillsborough County prosecutor Pam Bondi entering the attorney

generals race on the Republican side, withstate Sen. Dan Gelber of Miami Beach formal-izing his bid for the Democratic nomination. The race to succeed Attorney General BillMcCollum, who is poised Thursday to file hiscandidacy papers for governor, is emerging asone of the most crowded contests. DemocraticSen. Dave Aronberg of Greenacres is alreadyrunning along with no-party contender JimLewis. Republican Holly Benson also plans tofile this week.

In the chief financial officer race, former Tal-lahassee Rep. Loranne Ausley qualifiedWednesday as a Democrat running for the post being vacated by Sink. Her candidacycomes a day after Senate President Jeff Atwa-ter of North Palm Beach filed on the Republi-can side. The race for agriculture commissioner addedThad Hamilton, a retired Army colonel fromBroward County, running as a no-party candi-date.

The conservative Norman fitsthe political mood swing now coursingthrough the Senate, while Amblers main of-fense appears to be having proved too close tothe trial lawyer lobby reviled by the GOPbrass. ments from Senate leaders including SenatePresident Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, and Haridopolos, in her contest with formerRep. Sharon Merchant of Palm Beach Gar-dens. Each candidate has strengths and sup-porters but neither calls home Lee County, seen as the pivot point for the Republican pri-mary. The winner will likely prove the top

vote-getter in this no-mans land. The GOPthinks it can take this seat away from Democ-rats in the fall. The seat is being vacated bySen. Dave Aronberg, D-Greenacres, who isrunning for attorney general.Senate District 36, Republicans: Can anotherDiaz de la Portilla navigate the politics and

ethical challenges of the Florida Senate? Mi-guel DLP is looking to succeed his term-limited brother, Alex, in the Miami Senate dis-trict. The latest DLP, a former Miami-DadeCounty Commission chairman, is another fa-vorite of Senate Republican leadership. But alikely free-swinging primary contest is aheadwith Miguel DLP facing-off with Rep. JulioRobaina, who is on the outs with GOP leadersover his tendency to break ranks.House District 9, Democrats: Rep. MichelleRehwinkel Vasilinda of Tallahassee versusRick Minor, the former Leon Democraticchairman, is all about oil-wrestling. The in-cumbent was the rare Democrat to support a2009 House effort to open Floridas near shorecoastline to oil-drilling -- a move Minor willnot let voters forget in this summer of oil.Rehwinkel Vasilindas political future clearlycould be shaped by the vote unless wordslike sheen, skimmers and boom are dropped

from the regions vocabulary by Aug. 24. Va-silinda is now working hard to make it clearshe doesnt support new drilling.House District 31, Republicans: One-term in-cumbent Rep. John Tobia of Satellite Beachfaces a stern career challenge from IndialanticCity Councilwoman Lori Halbert, whosdrawn an endorsement from Republican U.S.Senate contender Marco Rubio, and campaignhelp from former GOP Brevard County Chair-man Jason Steele. The rising GOP muscle

may leave Tobia outmatched.House District 33, Republicans: The race tofill a seat opened by Rep. Sandy Adams con-gressional candidacy has drawn a trio of GOPcontenders. But Jason Brodeur, a health-careconsultant and pal of House speaker-in-waiting Chris Dorworth of Lake Mary, islikely to battle it out with Alice Sterling, an

optometrist, whose candidacy is being pow-ered by her fellow professionals. Watch forTallahassees perennial industry battle -- oph-thalmologists versus optometrists -- to providea political subtext and source of campaign dol-lars for the rivals.House District 45, Republicans: Another open

seat has a pair of well-known Republicans ateach others throats. Pasco County SchoolBoard member Kathryn Starkey faces lawyerRichard Corcoran. Starkeys been backed byformer Gov. Bob Martinez, Corcoran is a fa-vorite of former Gov. Jeb Bush. Corcoran alsohad the Senate GOP power structure behindhim a couple years ago during an aborted racefor Senate. If he stays in this one, Corcoranmight win.House District 79, Republicans: Rep. Mike

Horner, R-Kissimmee, is pulling out celebrityendorsements as he tries to fend off a seriousprimary challenge from multi-millionaire rivalThomas Chalifoux, a veteran Osceola CountySchool Board member. Former Gov. Jeb Bushand ex-GOP presidential contender turned talkshow host, Mike Huckabee, are among thoseHorner is calling in. The Chalifoux-Hornercontest almost took place in 2008, whenChalifoux was ruled ineligible because of aresign-to-run snafu. But this time, the battlelooks real and fierce.House District 80, Republicans: Another first-term Republican in a tough fight, Rep. DebbieMayfield of Vero Beach, faces former Rep.Art Argenio, who abandons a Hatfields-McCoy like relationship with Sen. Joe Negronto turn toward another Treasure Coast seat.Argenios been around a while, having de-feated Negron for a House seat in 1999, onlyto lose to him in 2000 and toying briefly with

a run for a state Senate seat last year againstNegron, again. This time Mayfield, who suc-ceeded her late husband in the district, will bethe focus of Argenio, who describes himself asthe most conservative person in the world.House District 90, Democrats: A contest cer-tain to rock the condos of Palm Beach andBroward counties: Former Rep. Irv Slosbergof Boca Raton is squaring off against Sheldon

Klassy Klasfeld. Can the originator of theslogan Let Irv Serve, whose past campaignsincluded promotional schlepper bags beat arival pivoting his campaign around the themeSend Klassy To Tallahassee? Its a condobattle for the ages. The National Rifle Association and the Uni-

fied Sportsmen of Florida think U.S. Rep.Adam Putnam has the best shot at a successfulAgriculture Commissioner. The powerful gunlobby endorsed Putnam, a Republican runningto replace term-limited Agriculture Commis-sioner Charlie Bronson, Thursday. NRA lob- byist Marion Hammer, a former president ofthe national organization, called Putnam achampion of gun rights in the state. Wedeeply appreciate your support of SecondAmendment, self-defense and anti-crime is-

sues and your outstanding work to protect ourrights and freedoms while you were a memberof the Florida House of Representatives and asa member of the United States Congress,Hammer said in a statement. Your solid pro-sportsmen, pro-Second Amendment, pro-freedom record has earned your our endorse-ment and our gratitude. Putnam, R-Bartow, isthe only major Republican candidate for Agri-culture Commissioner, and he has outpacedDemocratic candidates Scott Maddox andRick Minton in fundraising.Sen. Steve Oelrich, the State Senatorwho stymied our stiffer penalties Bill by say-ing that the Bill will only apply if bikers arewearing a helmet when they are hit. He alsowanted to add a mandatory helmet amendmentto our Bill. He now has an opponent for his re-election. This would be a good chance to gethim out of the Senate.Former state House member Perry McGriff, a

Gainesville insurance agent, will file this weekto run against Republican Sen. Steve Oelrich,R-Cross Creek, McGriff announced Monday.McGriff, a Democrat, served in the Housefrom 2000-2002 and is also a former memberof the Gainesville city commission andGainesville mayor. Democrats have put a tar-get on Oelrichs District 14 seat, which has aDemocratic majority in registration. McGriff

Greg Zaffke II has posted on Facebook, under

the Black Nail Brigade, fighting against dis-tracted driving that the sentencing for Lora Huntof Illinois, who killed Zaffkes mother, Anita Zaf-fke, in 2009, is set for July 22nd 2010. I am nota head hunter, but I am a mother as well, I would

like to see justice. I do not want my sons to suf-fer the same fate Anita Zaffkes son has. LoraHunt was painting her nails as she plowed intothe back of Anita Zaffkie.

"unnecessary and unfortunate" in their letter but said they are more concerned aboutnews late last week that EPA will not makea decision until later this fall. This second delay should "not be tolerated,"the lawmakers said. The letter asks Obamato "take all action necessary" to expedite thewaiver petition and immediately consideran interim blend of 12 percent ethanol. The same problems arise with a 12% blendas with a 15% blend. No one knows what

the compromise blend will do to motorcy-cles, air cooled engines, or other vehiclespre 2001.Should you hail from one of the States thatthe four Senators are from, the MRF en-courages you to contact them and ask forproof that the new blend will not harm theengines in question. All others are encour-aged to contact the White House on this im-portant matter. "Its crucial that the Ameri-can people press for more testing on thisissue as Obama cabinet members have goneon record saying they are confident thisnew measure will be approved" said JeffHennie, Vice President of Government Re-lations and Public Affairs for the Motorcy-

At a recent meeting with Senator Max Bau-cus (D-MT), the chief architect of the fi-nancing portion of the next Highway Au-thorization Bill, the MRF learned that thesupport for the robust financing the bill de-serves is just not there. With Federal spend-ing already at an all time high, the political

will to raise any funds for the bill hasslipped away for the time being. Itsunlikely at this point that a final bill will bepassed before the current extension is up atthe end of this year. The MRF encouragesyou to attend any town hall style meetingsyour Senators or Representatives may holdover the 4th of July break and urge them toget a bill passed soon. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation willkeep you updated on these and any otherissues affecting motorcyclists.
