PRESIDENTS MESSAGE 3RD TERM AS SOUTHWEST PRESIDENT4TH TERM SOUTHWEST E-BOARD

    Hello Brothers and Sisters,

School is back in session and our first

round of MSAP classes have been con-

ducted. I would like to thank our Safety

Director Vic Piorkowski for his continued

efforts assuring training in the 10th grade

drivers ed classes. I would also like to

mention V.P. Fred Glennon and memberRobin Reynolds who have assisted in

conducting classes as well. Fred and

Robin will be presented with patches for

their completion of MSAP training. Well

    done Safety team.

This past month we headed up to Sara-

sota for the August State meeting held

by West Coast Chapter. We had a groupof 8 bikes and 12 members ride up and

attend the meeting. Thank you all who

chose to spend their day with the

    ABATE family.

We closed out the month supporting the

Bikers against Bullying event hosted by

    Rebel Cycles and the Ger-

    man American Social club.

What a great ride. I had

pulled my back out the day

before so I was honored to

lead the group on a 94 mile

ride in our truck. This event

    turned out great for our

    Chapter. We picked up

some new members, a cou-ple new ads and met some great people

from other organizations as well as get-

ting some donated booth space at this

    years Oktoberfest.

I look forward to the next few months as

there are many Can you see me rides

on the books. We will join in with several

chapters for an October ride to Sarasota

followed by the Southwest Chapters ride

with the Ft Myers L.A.M.A.s, Latin

    American Motorcycle Association, and

the Lost Riders who are helping us get

    the message out.

Stay tuned as we cruise into Season

    with more rides and events.

    Til then,

    Ride Safe, Ride Often

VICE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE 1ST TERM AS SOUTHWEST VICE PRESIDENT1ST TERM SOUTHWEST E-BOARD

Hello Brothers and Sisters,As the summer season comes to a close and we con-

tinue to endure the afternoon downpours and heaton the road, we look ahead to the days and nightswhen the environment is more conducive to our mo-torcycle lifestyle. The one thing that we dont look

forward to is the return of the congested roadways.Along with the congestion comes the erratic drivingpractices of the people that feel that the road istheirs and that traffic laws dont apply to them. Thisis where our focus should be in the future monthsahead. We do a great job at getting our word out to the mo-

torcycle public at bike nights and events, but is thisactually our target audience? I believe our attentionshould be directed at the cage drivers that are outthere killing our friends, family. Our brothers andsisters. But how do we do this?????? For me, it allbegins with 2 words, THANK YOU!

These are powerful words. Much morepowerful and effective than the other 2words that we are accustomed to usingwhen we are cruising the streets on 2

wheels. We all know our reaction whenwe are being tailgated or cut off outthere. But what is our reaction when adriver does the right thing for us? Givesus the right of way? Sees us and thenuses their blinkers before changing lanes?Stopping well behind us at a red light? How often do we actually say thank you?How often do we even waive and smile?

So instead of focusing our attention to the baddriver when we are beside them at a red light, lets

focus on the positive. I love the reaction that I getwhen I ask a person to roll their window down andthen thank them for whatever the pro motorcyclebehavior was that they just exhibited. A friend ofthe motorcycle community was just created, andtheir driving practice, whatever it was, is going tobe repeated. Thank You, such a simple gesture butsuch powerful results. So as we head into the Season , dont ever takeour eyes off the terrible drivers, but lets never miss

the chance to promote positive driving habits and

make a friend..Say thank you.So for everyone out their and for all the hard workthat you do, all I can say is .. THANK YOU.

    Ride safe,

    Fred

    How many

    times have we

blown itwhen a final offer ismade and we didnt

accept? And, weknow we shouldhave accepted. What-ever there was togain and possiblyenjoy, is now lostforever.

We remember when the Buells were being offeredfor the last time, as the brand, as announced by theHarley-Davidson parent company. They were nolonger going to be produced. We also recall when

the company that produced the Indians was reportedto be in serious financial trouble. We knew it waswritten in the trade papers that the bikes would nolonger be available. Some missed out (if, you likeIndians) on that beautiful red Indian Chief, withthose big, wide, comfortable beach bars! The signs were there, that something was about to

happen. However, we didnt act in time. The signs about the end times, of our current exis-tence here on earth, appear to be very clear that theend is near.

The same Books of the Bible that have predicted/prophesized with 100% accuracy of events that havealready taken place, are now predicting the signs andhow the end times will come about. The propheciesthat needed to come about, before the end timescould happen, have already been fulfilled. Here are just some of the many prophecies that havebeen fulfilled, to clear the way for the end times:

It was predicted in Leviticus, Deuteronomy, andin Nehemiah that Israel would be scatteredall over the world. Jesus gave the prophecy

that Jerusalem would suffer destruction. And,it occurred in 70 A.D. Luke 21:24 Then,in many passages the scriptures predict the re-gathering of Israel just before the end times.Ezekiel 20:34 - "I will bring you from thenations and gather you from the countries

where you have been scattered -- with amighty hand and an outstretched arm and

with outpoured wrath." And, what happenedon May 14, 1948? Isaiah 66:8 NIV - "Who

has ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever

seen such things? Can a country be born in a

day or a nation be brought forth in a mo-

ment? Yet no sooner is Zion in labor than shegives birth to her children."The labor proba-bly refers to the holocaust that occurred inWW II, only a few years earlier. Who would

have guessed, living at that time, that whilethe Jews were in their most dire straits, inonly a very short time, their nation would bereborn!

The language of the Jews to be restored Be-

fore the re-gathering and after the dispersal, the language of the Jews was described asbeing Yiddish. Now, a more pure form ofHebrew is spoken. Zephaniah 3:8-10 KJV -"For then will I turn to the people a pure lan-

guage, that they may all call upon the name

of the LORD, to serve him with one consent. From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my sup-

pliants, [even] the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering".

Israels currency is to be restored - Ezekiel45:12-16 NIV - "The shekel is to consist of

twenty gerahs. Twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels equal one

mina.... All the people of the land will par-

ticipate in this special gift for the use of theprince in Israel."

Israel will prosper - Isaiah 26:6 NIV - "In daysto come Jacob will take root, Israel will budand blossom and fill all the world with fruit."

Isaiah 35:1-2 NIV - "The desert and the

parched land will be glad; the wilderness

will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, itwill burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly

and shout for joy...."II Timothy 3:1-5,7NIV "But mark this: There

will be terrible times in the last days. People

will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,

boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to theirparents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control,

brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous,

rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather

than lovers of Godhaving a form of godli-ness but denying its power. Have nothing to

do with such people.7always learning but

never able to come to a knowledge of thetruth.

Matthew 24:6-8 NKJV And you will hear of

wars and rumors of wars. See that you are

not troubled; for all these things must come

to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation willrise against nation, and kingdom against

kingdom. And there will be famines, pesti-

lence and earthquakes in various places.

Allthese are the beginning of sorrows.

The primary idea is that you need not know all of themany scriptures to know that Gods word is true. What He says will happen, will actually happen! The track record is there. Most Biblical scholars predict the next event willbe. 1 Corinthians 15:51 and 52 Behold, I showyou a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall

all be changed,In a moment, in the twinkling of an

eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound,

and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and weshall be changed. 1 Thessalonians 4:17Then we who are alive and remain will becaught up together with them in the clouds tomeet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be

with the Lord. The question is, Are you ready? Those in Christ,

living and the dead shall be taken up to avoid the

Great Tribulation, which is ahead. Matthew 24:21Say this short little prayer and mean every word of itwith the conviction and love in your heart. "Dear

God, the Father of Jesus Christ, I confessthat I am a sinner and have been separatedfrom You. I receive forgiveness of my sinsby the finished work on the cross. I repent

and accept this gift of repentance and Iwish to be free in you. I confess with mymouth that your son Jesus is my savior anddied for me. I believe in my heart that Youraised Him from the dead. I receive Jesusinto my heart and ask Him to become thecenter of my life. I ask, in the Name of Je-sus. Amen."If you wish to contact us, to talk about your decisionfor Him, please email or call. AMA FUEL FOR

    THOUGHT

    E15 BACKGROUND

E15 is a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percentethanol by volume. Although the U.S. Environmental Pro-tection Agency has approved its use in 2001-and-newerlight-duty vehicles, which include cars, light-duty trucks andmedium-duty passenger vehicles, the EPA hasnt approvedits use in motorcycles or ATVs however.Weve repeatedly expressed concerns to government offi-

cials and federal lawmakers about possible damage to mo-torcycle and ATV engines caused by the inadvertent use ofE15, which is now becoming available at gas stations, says Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for governmentrelations.Anecdotally, we hear about problems with motorcycle en-gines related to ethanol in gasoline, Allard says. The AMAwants motorcycles and ATVs to be part of a scientific studyon the effects of E15 so that motorcyclists know what toexpect if they inadvertently put E15 in their gas tanks, or if

E15 is approved for motorcycle use later.(Learn more: Intermediate-Level Ethanol Blends Engine Durabil-ity Study)The AMA hosted an E15 Fuel for Thought lobby day onJune 19, 2013, which was modeled after the AMAs highlysuccessful Capitol Hill Climb kids dirtbike lobbying dayheld in Washington, D.C. on May 26, 2011. The lobby dayhelped educate lawmakers about the need to research thepossible harmful effects of E15 fuel on motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle engines.Recently, U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) intro-duced H.R. 875 to repeal the EPAs decision approving theuse of E15 in certain vehicles. The bill also would bar theagency from granting further decisions on the use of thefuel until the EPA obtains an independent scientific analysisof the effects of the E15 blend. There have been several tests highlighting E15s harmfuleffects on engines, Sensenbrenner says, but they have allbeen dismissed by the EPA. Therefore, we must force theEPA to stop the use of E15 fuel until the serious safety,

durability, performance and environmental concerns havebeen addressed, he says. We have a responsibility toensure that Americans using gas-powered machinerywhether it be cars and boats or chainsaws and lawnmow-ersare not put at risk due to faulty fuel that has not beenvetted.Follow this link for information on what AMA and itsmembers have done so far on this issue.

LEGISLATIVE REPORT ~ SEPT. 2013Submitted by Ken TEDDYBEAR Miller

    Good Morning Freedom Fighters:

From ABATE of Florida, Inc.Darrin Scribe BrooksHey Everyone,Here is the latest Florida Motorcycle Riders survey from CUTR(Center for Urban Transportation Research). They are the hostfacility for the MSC (Motorcycle Safety Coalition). This is the coali-tion that ABATE has a seat on and that I have talked about manytimes before.I would like you to please take the survey and where it asks for"other" input ABATE of Florida, Inc. as the source in which youreceive the most information about motorcycle safety. Please pass this along to all your email list, it does provide us withgreat information. And by adding "ABATE" to your answers, it willallow me to see if they actually report all the responses, or just theresponses that CUTR wants.

A few minutes of your time could improve the safety of Floridas

roads. Were looking for honest feedback from Florida motorcy-clists so that we can evaluate the effectiveness of various safetypromotion efforts and continue to improve traffic safety in Florida.Your opinion will be compiled as part of a research study spon-sored by the Florida Department of Transportation and conductedby the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the Universityof South Florida (IRB Study #Pro2384).You must be a Florida resident and at least 18 years old to partici-pate. The way it works is simple:1. Click here to complete the surveyonline. The survey takes less than 15 minutes to complete.2. After you complete the survey, enter to win a motorcycle jacket,a one-year membership to AAA with motorcycle coverage or anLED light kit!We take your privacy very seriously. All information collected willbe held strictly confidential and remain anonymous. If you haveany questions or concerns about the survey, please e-mail us [email protected]. If you have already completed thesurvey this year, thank you for your participation.Sincerely,The Center for Urban Transportation ResearchUniversity of South FloridaJUSTICES TO HEAR ARGUMENTS INRED-LIGHT CAMERA CASESThe Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments Oct. 8 in cases

from Orlando and Aventura about the legality of local red-lightcamera ordinances. The court set the date Tuesday. Two appealscourts have taken different stances about the ordinances, with the5th District Court of Appeal rejecting Orlando's ordinance becauseit said the measure conflicts with state traffic laws. The 3rd DistrictCourt of Appeal earlier upheld Aventura's ordinance. The casecould have broader implications, as other cities have adopted red-light camera ordinances.BILL TO TEENS: PUT DOWN THAT PHONE AND DRIVEState Rep. Irv Slosberg, a Boca Raton Democrat who has longpushed for traffic safety, filed a bill this week that would bar youthsunder age 18 from using mobile phones while driving. The pro-

posal (HB 5), which is filed for the 2014 legislative session, goefurther than a measure approved this year that seeks to stop teting while driving. Slosberg's bill, for example, also would not allominors to talk on cell phones while they drive. Minors could gticketed for non-moving violations. Slosberg has been heavily i

volved in traffic-safety issues after the death of his daughter in car accident.DIAZ DE LA PORTILLA PROPOSES'AARON COHEN' HIT-AND-RUN ACTSen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, has introduced a meaure (SB 102) that would make it a second-degree felony for a mtorist who fails to remain at the scene of a crash involving serioubodily injuries. The "Aaron Cohen Life Protection Act would alsrequire the court to revoke for three years the driver's license ofperson convicted of leaving the scene of a crash involving injury death. The act is named after Aaron Cohen, a businesdevelopment manager at Esserman Automotive Group, who wa

killed when he, along with another bicyclist, was struck by a vehcle on the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami in February 201The driver, Michele Traverso, pleaded guilty and was sentenced January to 364 days plus two years of community controTraverso, according to reports, was operating the vehicle withsuspended license, fled the scene, and turned himself in the neevening after calling his attorney rather than 911. It is alreadyfelony to leave the scene of a crash that involves a death. The awould impose mandatory sentences of three years in jail if thresponsible party flees the scene that involves injury to anothindividual, seven years for a serious bodily injury, and 10 yearsthe crash results in a death.Safety Funding money question

Rising Motorcycle FatalitiesApril 25, 2013Over the past few years, we have read numerous articles whclaim that while motor vehicle related fatalities have been dcreasing, motorcycle related fatalities have been increasing. article published this week on NICHES.com made that sampoint.Instinctively, this does not make sense. With the motorcyclicommunity placing more of an emphasis on training and eduction, one would think that we would be seeing a decrease in mtorcycle related fatalities. If you go to the website for the NationHighway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) you can find t

fatality statistics through 2010. For illustration purposes lets loat motor vehicle fatalities from 2005 to 2010 since that is the layear in which NHTSA has reported data. While it is true you wsee motor vehicle fatalities are generally dropping, motorcyfatalities during this period have gone up and come down.Interestingly, NHTSA further breaks down motor vehicle fatalitper 100,000 registered motor vehicles. However, they do not that for each type of motor vehicle. It is only done for motor vecles as a whole. Unfortunately, one cannot find a breakdown registered motorcycles per year on the NHTSA site (to be accrate I should say I couldnt). However, if you go to the website the Federal Highway Administration you can find motorcycle regtrations by year and then compare those numbers to the reportfatalities from NHTSA. Those numbers break down as follows:2005 - 6,227,146 registered motorcycles and 4,576 motorcyrelated fatalities2006 - 6,678,958 registered motorcycles and 4,837 motorcyrelated fatalities2007 - 7,138,476 registered motorcycles and 5,174 motorcyrelated fatalities2008 - 7,752,926 registered motorcycles and 5,312 motorcyrelated fatalities2009 - 7,929,724 registered motorcycles and 4,469 motorcyrelated fatalities2010 - 8,009,503 registered motorcycles and 4,502 motorcy

related fatalitiesWhen we look at those numbers, the motorcycles fatalities p100,000 registered motorcycles from 2005 to 2010 break down follows:2005 73.482006 72.432007 72.482008 68.522009 56.362010 56.21

As you can see, when we factor in registrations, we see that sin2005, motorcycle fatalities per 100,000 registered motorcycles a

trending down as well. If that is the case, why dont we see anyreporting on that fact? It is because simply reporting numberswithout context is easy. It takes work to actually find relevant datato put the numbers into perspective. Those who have no interestin either motorcycles or motorcyclists are not going to do the workit takes to report accurately.

After all, reporting that motorcyclists are killing themselves on thehighways makes a much better story than reporting that our com-munitys emphasis on training and education seems to be havinga positive impact on highway safety.

Congress Takes a Break, You Should Take Advantage.

The United States Congress is taking its traditional August recess. In keeping with a very old school tradition, Congress will be vacat-ing D.C. for the longest, hottest month. Back in the day, beforemodern air conditioning, Congress would leave D.C. for the monthbecause it was too miserable, DC being a literally, a swamp. When the idea for a national capitol came about, no State wantedto use valuable farmland so Virginia and Maryland kindly donatedthe cesspool that was the headwaters of the Potomac River. The

land was donated because it was deemed worthless. The Augubreak was well deserved because the Members of Congresrarely traveled home during session. Most opted to stay in D.Cboarding houses rather than take the long stagecoach ride to thehome state.Currently, the recess begins August 5th and runs through Setember 6th. Most of the Members of the House of Representativeand the Senate will be spending significant time in their homstate offices. The MRF encourages you to schedule a brief mee

ing or go to a town hall and meet with your federal elected ofcials. There are many important issues that need your time anattention. The most important issue is the Motorcycle Only Roadside Checpoint elimination bill. HR 1861 is a bill before the US House Representatives. This bill would end the future funding of any motorcycle only roadside checkpoints from the Federal governmenIt is crucial that we obtain a large number of cosponsors on thlegislation to move this bill forward. Please set aside some time to meet with your Federal electeofficials this August. Should you need any help setting up meeings or for more information do not hesitate to contact the MRF 202-546-0983 [email protected]

    Brothers and Sisters,

During the last three months I have been a pas-senger in the cars of three friends. Two non-

October 1st, in the state of Florida, it becomes asecondary offense to text while operating a vehi-cle. Meaning ... if you get pulled over for anotherviolation, you can be sited for texting and driv-ing.

You may think ... ...hmmm how is this possible,by the time the officer pulls you over you canstash the phone. Well, I myself, am not too con-cerned about that presently.

The points system, affecting insurance premiums,

of the state was updated to include two points tobe assigned if a texting ticket is given in a schoolsafety zone and six points will be assessed if its

found that the unlawful use of a wireless commu-nications device results in a car crash. That maybe hard to prove, however, since this new lawspecifically states a driver's phone records can be

used as evidence only if a crash results in a deathor injury.

The seatbelt law started as a secondary offense ..now it's a primary violation and has been sinceJuly 1986. I can only hope that my MRO(Motorcycle Rights Organization), ABATE ofFlorida, Inc., Southwest Chapter together withthe public outcries, can force the hand of ourState Government to make this a Primary Of-fense. We have made it this far ... let's just keeppushing it onto the discussion table.

Moving my feet in a forward direction!

    Best Regards,

Barbara L. Bardell aka Babs xo
