Textbook: IMAGINA: español sin barreras 3rd ed. / Vista Higher Learning / Blanco, Tocaimaza-Hatch

Course Description:

This class is designed for students who have successfully completed four years of Spanish instruction and desire:

1. To further develop, refine and advance their language skills in speaking, writing, reading, listening and understanding the Spanish language.

2. To broaden cultural awareness and understanding of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world.

Spanish V- Our focus will be an intensive grammar review, discussion of a comprehensive selection of literature written by native Spanish speakers, and an analysis of a variety of cultural themes. Students will improve their listening comprehension while listening to native discourse from films and lab work. The course is also dedicated to the improvement of vocabulary, written reaction, and oral communication.

As a Spanish V student, you are eligible to enroll in the College Credit in the High School (CCIHS) program at UW-Green Bay if one of the following criteria is met at the beginning of the term.

• The student is in the upper 25% of the senior class –OR-- • The student has a GPA of at least 3.25 on a scale of 4.0 –OR— • The student has an ACT score of 24 and is in the upper 50% of the senior class.

If you do not meet the requirement, you are still able to take Spanish V for high school credit only.

Standards Stressed in World Languages

Communication

The communication standard focuses on the use of language for communication in "real life" situations. It emphasizes "what students can do with language" rather than "what they know about language." Students are asked to communicate in oral and written form, interpret oral and written messages, and show cultural understanding when they communicate and present oral and written information to various audiences for a variety of purposes.

Cultures

Cultural understanding is an important part of world languages education. Experiencing other cultures develops a better understanding and appreciation of the relationship between languages and other cultures, as well as the student's native culture. Students become better able to understand other people's points of view, ways of life, and contributions to the world.

Connections

World languages can have a natural connection with other subject areas. Content from other subject areas is integrated with world language instruction through lessons that are developed around common themes.

Comparisons

Students are encouraged to compare and contrast languages and cultures. They discover patterns, make predictions, and analyze similarities and differences across languages and cultures. Students often come to understand their native language and culture better through such comparisons.

Communities

Extending learning experiences from the world language classroom to the home and multilingual and multicultural community emphasizes living in a global society. Activities may include: field trips, use of e-mail and the World Wide Web, Multicultural Club activities, and opportunities to hear speakers of other languages in the school and classroom.

College Credit in the High School (CCIHS)- Spanish 202 Intermediate Spanish Language II Programmatic Outcomes

1. Speak standard Spanish at advanced-mid level as defined by ACTFL 2. Read non-technical prose at advanced level as defined by ACTFL 3. Comprehend clearly articulated conversations on everyday topics in standard Spanish at the

ACTFL advanced level. 4. Write about non-technical topics at the intermediate-high/advanced ACTFL level. 5. Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of Spanish/Latin American cultures. 6. Have read great works of Spanish/Latin American literature and have a sense of their place in

literary history. 7. Research literary and cultural topics and report findings. 8. Obtain skills to help them qualify for professional work in various areas such as teaching,

translating and interpreting, positions in business appropriate to students in the languages or be prepared to attend graduate school.

9. Reflect on the social values of the culture(s) they are studying and be able to draw reasoned comparisons to their own culture on topics important to the culture(s) being studied.

Due to the design of this course, Valders students must have access to the Internet and must have an e-mail account. If you don’t have the internet at home, you need to be willing to use the computers in the LMC before and after school and during your lunch hour on a daily basis. There are also two computers in the Spanish classroom that can be utilized, with headphones, during study hall time during the school day. You may also take advantage of the local public library or local businesses that offer free Wi-Fi.

Please note that extension activities are required for this course: Students will be asked to complete computer activities online and to complete 3 activities that utilize Spanish “outside of the classroom environment.” THE EXPECTATION IS THAT ONLY SPANISH IS SPOKEN IN THE CLASSROOM Attendance Policy: This course will move at a quick pace. You will miss a great deal if you are absent so your attendance is important. Please be in class on time each day with your materials. If you are absent it is your responsibility to contact a fellow classmate to get the missed information before the next class. You must complete the missed work within the required time per the VHS student handbook. You will also be asked to make up the missed oral/listening participation time as well.
