EDUCATIONAL TOYS & GAMES

Welcome to the Red Deer Advocate’s annual

Creative ADventures feature, created entirely by the students of central Alberta.

Kids throughout the area have put pencil (sometimes crayon) to paper to create this entire special section. With the help of some amazing teachers, the Red Deer Advocate is proud to help these young artists and designers showcase their talent and creativity by creating advertising for local businesses in this fantastic special section.

We extend a sincere thank you to participating students and teachers for all the great contributions. Also, a special thanks to all of our advertisers who made this project possible and provided the opportunity to showcase the talent and creative efforts of the all the students who contributed.

We extend a very special thanks to Kids in Harmony. Working together, the Red Deer Advocate and Kids in Harmony were able to provide a prize to every class that participated in drawing an advertisement!

Boom! Went sounds of firecrackers being set off into the dark sky. I awoke suddenly hearing people shouting, “It’s almost New Years!” I could hear their footsteps coming towards the barn where I had been sleeping in my warm stall. Thjey were partying, they had lights sticking out of their mouths which they called cigarettes, but it smelt like smoke to me. I pretended to be asleep, m,y masters and their friends were never really nice to mer and the rest of the horses, especially when they had been drinking.

The barn had become quiet, everyone had gone home but my master. He was just fi nishing his cigarette when I heard him say, “Those horses are nothing but trouble to me!” I saw him toss his cigarette from his mouth and walk out of the barn. I could smell smoke, it was coming from the tack room! My dam whinnied loudly to the other horses. I was the only one that could open locks, as my mouth was still tiny, so I decided to chew the lock. “Spirit hurry!” my friend Amy told me. I got the lock open from my stall, I jumped over the fi re and got the rest of the horses free from their stalls.

I escaped the burning barn, cantering for about an hour until the barn was nowhere to be seen. I was leading the rest of the horses. “You did a great job leading Spirit”, said my other friend Pepper. “Where is my dam?” I asked Amy and Pepper. “Well, I don’t know” they replied. “Do you know where my dam is?” I repeated. “I think she got left vbehind in the fi re,” Pepper told me. I sprinted off to an apple tree, and laid underneath the tree for about an hour remembering how much I loved her and missed her before coming back to the rest of the horses.

My name is Spirit, I can remember being born 6 months earlier in the wild with my mom by my side. We were free, eating the sweet green grass whenever we wanted. I remember one day men came on big pinto horses and roped us along out necks and brought us to a barn. I still remember the fire, freeing the other horses and losing my dam. I will always remember what my dam told me, “you must run fast, run wild, run free.”
