1 TheattentionofteachersandlecturersisdrawntothefollowingextractsfromtheArrangementsdocument.
Thecandidatemustdemonstratetheabilityto:
selectasuitabletopic adoptapersonalstancetowardsthetopic devise,structureandsustainanargument selectevidencefromprimaryandsecondarysourcestosupportanargument employtheliterary,linguisticormediaconceptsandterminologyappropriatetothe
expositionofthetopic.
The firststageintheprocessistheselectionbythecandidateoftextsortopicsforstudyandtheformulationofabriefdescriptivestatementofwhatthecandidateproposestostudy.Thisproposalmustbesubmittedtotheteacher/lecturerforapprovalin ordertoensurethattheproposedmaterialsareappropriatetoanEnglishcourseandworthyofstudyatthislevel,andthatthestudyitselfismanageable.
Thestudyshouldexplorealimitedareaandexamineitindetailwithappropriatesupportingevidence.

2 Someimplicationsoftheserequirements
(a) Theteacher/lecturershouldassistcandidatestoidentifyauthorsandtexts,languageormediatopicsthatare:
appropriatetoanEnglishcourse worthyofstudyatthislevel.
(b) Thepurposeofprovidingacarefullywordedtopicistwofold:
tofocus,atanearlystageintheprocess,thecandidatesattentionontheaimsofthestudybeingundertaken
toprovideexaminerswiththemeansofassessingtheextenttowhichthecandidatehasachievedtheaimsassetout.
(c) Thewordingofthedissertationtopicshould:
