Pronunciation
• Clearly pronounce each word: if you do not know how to pronounce
something, look it up!• NO SLANG!
**Remember, this is a formal speech!• Avoid “fillers”
“you know” “um” “like” “and” “so”“uh”

Pitch
• Refers to the highs and lows of the voice
• Avoid a monotone voice at all costs!

Speed
• You are going to be nervous, and this causes you to talk faster
• Take a deep breath, relax, and start slower
• Don’t speak too slowly; that’s a sure way to create a crowd
snoozer!

Volume
• Make sure the people in the back can hear you
• Do not scream• You may want to try getting louder
at some sections for emphasis

Quality
• Keep your voice conversational; nobody likes to be “talked at”
• You need to practice your speech to gain fluency
• DO NOT waste our time with a speech you did not bother to
practice

Stage Movement
• You should not be afraid to interact with your audience
• People view you as a confident speaker if you can step away from your notes and walk in the front of
the room

Eye Contact
• DO NOT READ YOUR SPEECH• Look at the entire audience, not
just the left side of the room• This is the best way to connect
with your audience• This will be heavily graded
