1 Einleitung

The capacity of exiting fiber connections can be multiplied by the use of WDM technologies. The utilisation of different frequencies (spectral light components/wavelengths allows the simultaneous transmission of different applications (e.g. 10 Gigabit Ethernet). The parallel transmissions are protocol-transparent and independent of each other. The SPEED-OTS-5000 can be easily extended and capable of transmitting up to 96 different applications through a fiber pair. Therefore, bit rates of up to 1.2 Tbps per fiber pair can be achieved whereby, for instance, existing rented lines can be saved and a quick ROI (Return On Investment) is ensured.

The SPEED-CARRIER 5U and SPEED CARRIER 5U H (High Power) systems developed by Pan

Dacom Direkt GmbH are fully modular, intelligent 19- (resp. 16-) Slot 19″ chassis. The system and the corresponding Fibre Channel system cards are certified by Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. The Brocade certification attests flawless interoperation with Brocade systems, especially for time-critical Fibre Channel transmissions over WDM infrastructures in WAN and MAN environments. All modules are front-pluggable, can be hot-swapped and replaced without interfering the data traffic. With the SPEED-CARRIER 5U H system cards with high bandwidths up to 200 Gbps and AES 256 Layer 1 encryption can be operated. Therefore this system is ideal for DCI applications.

The intelligent fan concept allows dense installation of further 19" units both on top and under the system. The ventilation design directs the air flow from the front to the rear so that no minimal distance margin between stackable 19”-systems is required. A grid of 18 (resp.12) individually controlled redundant fans is operated in an alternation mode to improve the lifespan of the fan module.

The power supply (230V AC, 48V DC) is redundant when equipped with two (or three) power supply units. The maximum system power consumption, when fully equipped with the SPEED-CARRIER 5U H, is 1100 watts.

3 System cards

The SPEED-OTS-5000 series consists of various active transponder and amplifier cards as well as passive CWDM/DWDM multiplexers, DCM (Dispersion Compensation Module) and various splitter cards. All system cards are hot-swappable and can be replaced during system operation.

All powered system modules are supplied from the subrack system via the backplane and don’t require the separate power supply.

By the use of transponder cards, it is possible to use copper-based interfaces (e.g. RJ-45) or "grey" client interfaces (e.g. 850 nm, 1310 nm, 1550 nm) on CWDM/DWDM wavelengths. This conversion occurs in a protocol-transparent manner without affecting the transmitted data (payload). All transponder cards are equipped with the 2R function allowing transmission up to 40 km. In addition transponder cards with 3R functionality (reshaping, re-amplification, retiming) ensure errorless transmission of up to 80 km.

With active multiplexer cards, the efficiency of the system can be significantly increased. Aggregation allows low- and high-bit-rate protocols to be multiplexed to two 100G coherent DWDM wavelengths and transmitted up to 80 km without optical amplifiers.

For transmission over longer distances different amplifiers can be used. Here, a distinction is made between EDFA-powered boosters, In-liners and Pre-Amp amplifiers and RAMAN-powered amplifier cards. Depending on the topology used, distances of up to 1,200 km can be reached.

Passive splitter cards are available for monitoring external OSA (Optical Spectrum Analysis) measuring instruments.

In addition, many passive multiplexer cards or 19" racks can be used depending on customer requirements. The passive CWDM and DWDM multiplexers, multiplex the different wavelengths on a fiber pair and thus make the transmission of up to 16/96 applications (160 Gbps / 1.2 Tbps) on 1 fiber pair possible.

SPEED-MUX 200G 2CFP

The SPEED-MUX 200G 2CFP is a compact 200 Gbps multi-protocol multiplexer card. The card can be equipped with 6 QSFP + or 6 QSFP28 transceivers and thus adjusted to customer needs. With the SPEED-MUX 200G 2CFP, direct aggregation of 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet, 8/16/32 Gigabit Fiber Channel, 5/10/14/25G InfiniBand and OTU-2 is possible and offers the user maximum flexibility in terms of application. With the CFP line transceivers used, two 100G OTU-4 services will be transmitted via one 50 GHz DWDM wavelength each. Thus, up to 96 DWDM wavelengths can be bundled for a transmission capacity of up to 9.6 Tbps over single fiber pair. With the integrated AES 256 Layer-1 encryption method, a hardware-based encryption with the lowest latency and full data throughput is used, which enables transmission of data according to the highest security standards. The SPEED-MUX 200G 2CFP can be also used as a dual 100G transponder card through the use of QSFP28 transceivers. This ensures investment protection for the user as part of future network expansions.

SPEED-DUALLINE 16G SFP+/XFP (16 Gbps transponder card)

The SPEED-DUALLINE 16G is a compact 2 channel transponder card. Depending on customer application, the SPEED-DUALLINE 16G can be equipped with four SFP+ ports or with two SFP+ and two XFP Ports. In CWDM and DWDM networks they build up to two 4/8/16 GFC channels on corresponding CWDM and DWDM wavelengths. In addition, the SPEED-DUALLINE 16G with the integrated 3R (Reshaping, Re-amplification, Retiming) function ensures errorless transmission over longer distances.

A further area of application of the SPEED-DUALLINE 16G is the interface conversion of SFP+ transceivers to XFP transceivers. The SPEED-DUALLINE 16G features additional 1+1 protection for redundant connection of two sites via Fibre Channel. Therefore, distance up to 80 km can be reached without intermediate sites. Depending on customer requirements, two 4/8/16 GFC signals can be transmitted. In addition, SNMP Traps can be sent to a management system via Ethernet using the built-in SNMP agent.

The system card is capable of mapping 10 Gbps signals in OTU-2 data packets by using OTN-DWDM transceivers and thus prepares the access point in an OTN network. Furthermore, with these OTN-Transceivers use can be made of FEC (Forward Error Correction) functionality and thus longer distances can be covered.

SPEED-SINGLELINE XFP (10 Gbps transponder card)

(Version with 2R) (Version with 3R)

The SPEED-DUALLINE XFP is a 10 Gbps transponder card for use in the SPEED-CARRIER subrack. It allows a cost-effective conversion and integration of optical 10 Gbps data signals such as GbE, STM-64 or 10 GFC into WDM grids. The card features two XFP slots (1x Client, 1x Line signal) that can be equipped independently of each other with multimode, single mode or C-/DWDM-XFPs. 3R feature (Re-amplification, Reshaping, Retiming) ensures digital signal restoration of the initial signal. For short distances there’s a 2R option available. With the use of XFPs with integrated EDC (Electronic Dispersion Compensation) the 10 Gbps signal can be transmitted over distances of up to 120 km. In addition it is possible to transmit SNMP traps to a management system over the built-in SNMP transmitter.

The system card is capable of mapping 10 Gbps signals in OTU-2 data packets by using OTN-DWDM transceivers and thus prepares the access point in an OTN network. Furthermore, with these OTN-Transceivers use can be made of FEC (Forward Error Correction) functionality and thus longer distances can be covered. .

SPEED-DUALLINE FC SFP+/XFP (8 Gbps transponder card)

The SPEED-DUALLINE FC is a compact 2 channel transponder card. Depending on customer’s application, the SPEED-DUALLINE FC can be equipped with four SFP+ ports or with two SFP+ and two XFP Ports. In CWDM and DWDM networks they build up up to two 2/4/8 GFC channels on corresponding CWDM and DWDM wavelengths. Use of 8 Gbps transceivers makes an upgrade from 4 Gbps to 8 Gbps without replacing the transponder card or transceiver possible. In addition, the SPEED-DUALLINE FC with the integrated 3R (Reshaping, Re-amplification, Retiming) function ensures errorless transmission also over longer distances. A further area of application of the SPEED-DUALLINE FC is the interface conversion of SFP+ transceivers to XFP transceivers.

SPEED-DUALLINE FC features additional 1+1 protection for redundant data-centre interconnection. Therefore, distances up to 80 km can be reached without intermediate sites. Depending on customer requirements, two 2/4/8 GFC signals can be transmitted. In addition, SNMP Traps can be sent to a management system via Ethernet using the built-in SNMP agent.

With advanced management function, the SPEED-DUALLINE FC can also be used as a managed Fibre Channel Demarcation CPE.

SPEED-DUALLINE SFP (2,67 Gbps transponder card)

(3R Version with 1+1 Protection) (2R Version)

The SPEED-DUALLINE SFP is a compact 2-channel transponder card with which two mutually independent data signals (10 Mbps – 2,67 Gbps) can be transparently transmitted. The card features 4 SFP plug-in ports (2x client-signal, 2x line-signal) that can be equipped always independently with multi-mode, single-mode, CWDM/DWDM, copper or single fiber SFPs and various data rates. In this way, for instance, the wavelength conversion of 1 x Gigabit-Ethernet (multi-mode 850 nm CWDM e.g. 1551 nm) and 1x STM-16 (multi-mode 850 nm CWDM e.g. 1571 nm) can be performed on a single card.

Apart from the simple wavelength conversion feature this card can also optionally perform 3R (Re-amplification, Reshaping, Retiming) signal regeneration. Additionally to wavelength conversion the SPEED-DUALLINE SFP can also be used for media conversion such as copper-based 1000Base TX to fiber-based 1000Base FX. In addition, SNMP Traps can be sent to a management system via Ethernet over the built-in SNMP agent.

The system card can be also optionally used with an integrated Cross Connect as a protection card for a channel. For this purpose an input signal (e.g. Gigabit Ethernet) is linked to output of two uplink SFPs. In the case of error (e.g. fracture of fiber cable) the card immediately (<50 ms) switches from to the back-up path. In this case a use of expensive line protection switches is not necessary.

SPEED-SINGLELINE SFP (1.25 Gbps transponder card)

The SPEED-SINGLELINE SFP is a compact cost-effective 1-channel system card that can transmit data signals from 30 Mbps - 1.25 Gbps. The card features 2 SFP plug-in ports (1x client-signal, 1x line-signal) so that, similar to the SPEED-DUALLINE SFP, it can be equipped independently either with multimode, single-mode, CWDM/DWDM, copper or single fiber SFPs, as well as various data rates.

Thus, an optical signal such as Gigabit Ethernet can be cost-effectively converted and linked into WDM systems. In addition, SNMP Traps can be sent to an external management system via Ethernet over the built-in SNMP agent.

SPEED-WDM (Passive CWDM/DWDM Series)

The SPEED-WDM series includes a range of passive CWDM and DWDM modules with different channel capacity. Similar to active system cards, these can be used directly in the 16 (or 15) slot SPEED-CARRIER 5U, in the 1U systems or in the desktop housing. The passive require one, two or three module slots, depending on the channel capacity. The SPEED-CWDM series is available as five or eight CWDM channels per system card. In addition there is the option to extend the system with further CWDM channels using the expansion port. In this case, a 16 channel CWDM system is built from two 8 channel SPEED-CWDM system cards that are connected with each other through a 1310nm port. With a very low insertion loss of only approx. 4 dB, the loss values, despite the expansion ports, stay even below the loss values of other compact 16 channel multiplexers.

The SPEED-CWDM multiplexers can be extended very easily and without interruption with DWDM channels. Insofar as they are free for this extension, the channels 1530 nm, 1550 nm and 1570 nm of the CWDM system can be equipped with DWDM multiplexers. Thus, 8 or 16 DWDM channels can be transmitted over each of these wavelengths. This means an upgrade option of up to 48 wavelengths/channels (14x CWDM / 34x DWDM). Depending on the distance and fibre type of application used, up to 100 Gbps per channel can be transmitted.

With the use of DWDM multiplexers up to 40 DWDM channels or up to 96 DWDM channels can be transmitted over one fiber pair. Per channel it is possible to switch on 10 Gbps applications - which give an overall data rate of 9,6 Tbps per fiber pair.

With help of our stepwise cascading concept it is possible to grow from 8 to 40 DWDM channels, without interruption of the running services.

Use-Case 7 : Cascading from 8 to 40 channel DWDM according to the "Pay-as-you-grow" concept

By use of SPEED-DWDM 1U series it is possible to transmit 40 DWDM channels over one fibre pair. With the help of integrated interleaver, the system can easily be extended up to 80 DWDM channels.

Complementary to the DWDM multiplexers, DWDM band filters can be used at intermediate stations. With these a group of eight DWDM wavelengths can be bundled and patched-through at the same time without the need for complete filter cascading. This method significantly simplifies the solution, using both less hardware and ensuring better insertion loss, at the optimal cost.

Depending on customers' requirements, we produce individual multiplexers with various wavelengths, connector types and ports capacity, available in different housing variations. SPEED-SPLIT 90/10 (WDM Monitoring card)

The SPEED-SPLIT series makes the live tapping of all DWDM wavelengths over an external OSA (Optical Spectrum Analyzer) measuring instrument possible. For this purpose the SPEED-SPLIT 97/03 splits up 10% of the optical power and makes it available for analysis. The SPEED-SPLIT 97/03 is also available in various individual split ratios (e.g. 97/03, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 and 50/50).

With the help of optical amplifiers it’s possible to significantly increase the range of optical transmission system. Depending on the transmission range and the available intermediate sites, four different amplifier variations can be used (Booster-, In-line-, Pre-Amp- and RAMAN amplifiers). SPEED-OTS-5000 series can simultaneously amplify up to 96 DWDM channels on a single fiber pair. The optical amplification is protocol- and data rate- agnostic and equally applies to all DWDM channels and supported rates between 10 Mbps to 100 Gbps. In addition, the amplifiers can be monitored and configured via the Command Line Interface (CLI), Telnet, SSH or using the SPEED-NMS Management with SNMP or the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Besides, an optional remote management via an on-board OSC channel is possible. All optical amplifiers fulfil the requirements of the Laser Class 1M so, that no additional laser protection measures are required on-site. Amplifiers can be installed in all available chassis, like SPEED-CARRIER 5U and SPEED-CARRIER 1U (B).

A point-to-point transmission of up to 170 km is possible with the use of a booster at the beginning of the transmission link.

With the additional use of a pre-amp amplifier at the end of the transmission distance, the transmission range of the whole system is increased up to 200 km. If only signals with a bandwidth of 1 Gbps are transmitted, then the range can be extended to 250 km. If there’s a possibility to install one or more Inline amplifiers within intermediate sites then the DWDM signal can be amplified with additional 23 dBm power budget. In this way, with an intermediate site in the transmission distance, up to 400 km can be reached, whereby the transmission range can be further extended with more intermediate sites over more than 1,000 km.

In order to improve OSNR (Optical Signal to Noise Ratio) behaviour RAMAN amplifiers of various power classes can be used. This technology can further extend the range of single-span transmission where additional inline amplification cannot be performed.

SPEED-DCM (Dispersion compensation module)

The dispersion compensation module is a passive component which compensates the runtime delays of the various spectral parts of corresponding wavelengths in optical transmission systems. Modules can be tailored individually from 20 km to 200 km with corresponding CDC (Chromatic Dispersion Compensation). The dispersion compensation is performed transparently to protocol and data rate from 10 Mbps to 40 Gbps. In this way, for instance, up to 40 DWDM (100 GHz grid) wavelengths can be compensated simultaneously a single fiber. The SPEED-DCM requires one slot in the SPEED-CARRIER 5U or in the SPEED-CARRIER 1U and can be also used in a passive desktop housing or in the 19" mounting rack.

Use-Case 12: Dispersion compensation for DWDM connections up to 200 km

SPEED-QUADLINE VOA (Monitoring and adjustment of optical power level)

The system card SPEED-QUADLINE VOA has been designed for use of VOA (Variable Optical Attenuation) SFPs. This technology becomes useful in meshed and long range networks, where ADD/DROP Multiplexers and amplifiers are used. Here, the optical power of dropped channels at intermediate sites may differ to directly passed-through-wavelengths. By passing through an amplification point within the network all these uneven channels will be amplified with same ratio. This may negatively influence the signal noise (OSNR) behavior and further increase non-linear impairments in the fiber. With the help VOA SFPs these effects can be compensated, through wavelength-accurate, software based optical power tapping und variable optical

attenuation adjustment. In this way higher optical power levels can be individually attenuated to match the levels of remaining channels. For signal power management SPEED-QUADLINE VOA Module offers a consistent signal power output and attenuation. The system card is compatible with SPEED-CARRIER chassis.

4 Management

SPEED-NMS (Management card)

The SPEED-NMS management card is the central access point of the SPEED-OTS-5000 series. The monitoring and configuration of the system can be performed via a Graphical User Interface, SNMP or per Command Line Interface.

The SPEED-OTS-5000 series can be integrated into existing management systems using of the Pan Dacom MIB description files. The system health can be constantly monitored and evaluated by means of comprehensive monitoring functions (e.g. transceiver RX-/TX level, temperature, etc. via DMI). Status change can be reported per SNMP trap. Five configurable trap sinks are available for this purpose.

Furthermore, the SPEED-NMS management features an intuitively operated Graphic User Interface (GUI) which transmits the information in encrypted (using HTTPS) form if desired. In this way an easy configuration and consolidated overview of the whole system is done.

In order to improve management experience, the slot and port icons of the GUI appear in different colour according to their status. In addition, an "Active alarm list" is available containing all critical conditions of the system at a glance. All alarms are stored in an alarm history in which, afterwards, inactive alarms can be recognised. Errors are quickly allocated to a customer or service by means of port descriptions. If required, the ports of all cards can be shown at once including description and status.

All configurations of the system cards are stored in the SPEED-NMS card. In the case if a system card has to be replaced due to failure, then the new system card automatically receives the configuration of the previous one. The configurations of the SPEED-NMS card are stored independently on the backplane on the SPEED-CARRIER 5U. Thus, even with the exchange of the management card, no further configuration effort is required. This feature ensures a quick and simple replacement of system card during maintenance or in emergency case even with untrained personnel.

Remote Management

The SPEED-NMS can be equipped with dedicated DWDM or CWDM pluggable SFPs which transmit the management information to the remote page via WDM link . The built-in Ethernet switch comes in very handy if additional network equipment is to be managed on-site via Ethernet. As shown below, the Ethernet management ports of the network equipment can be switched directly on the switch of the SPEED-NMS system card and can be transmitted via a single wavelength along with the management information of the SPEED-OTS-5000 series. This is done without any additional transponder hardware.

5 Transceiver: SFP, SFP+, XFP, QSFP+, QSFP28,CFP

In all of the SPEED-OTS-5000 related products, Pan Dacom Direkt uses only standard, MSA compliant pluggable SFP, SFP+ and XFP transceivers. The wide range of available optical solution supported by SPEED-OTS-5000 series also include high power SFPs with up to 41 dB link budget, which greatly improve the transmission range of the system.

In combination with the system transponder card these solutions also help to extend the reach of the transmission in meshed and ring structures "patching through" over passive components without the need of additional of active regeneration.
