Speedbuilding for Smarties
A Roadmap for Success
What is Speedbuilding
• Training your brain to – Process more and more information in a given
period of time, and– Use it to control motor action (steno or voice
strokes) – Efficiently
• The “Cardio” of your practice routine!
All machine writing…
• Is not speedbuilding• Some practice needs to focus on…
– Accuracy– Endurance– Correction– Comfort– New Ground– Fun & Recreation
Your Job as a Student
• Speed build Successfully– Increase your “writing” speed– Reveal what happens to your writing when
you increase your writing speed• Make errors and reveal them
– Take successful corrective action– Build endurance – Assess test readiness
What is practice?
• Writing on your machine
True Speedbuilding…
• Take small increments of dictation• Start from a “position of strength”• Repeat the dictation/writing at successively
higher speeds– To “goal speed”– Beyond “goal speed”
• Analyze writing• Do corrective exercises• Repeat the process
What happens when you speed-build properly?
• Put a pattern of doing the material correctly in short term memory
• Your brain can use this pattern to guide you when it’s trying to process information coming in at a faster rate than its comfortable with
• Your brain tries to help you copy your lower speed “good” writing at the higher speed!
What happens when you speed-build improperly?
• Put a pattern of doing the material poorly in short term memory
• Your brain can use this pattern to guide you when it’s trying to process information coming in at a faster rate than its comfortable with
• Your brain tries to help you copy your mistakes at the higher speed!
• Speed development takes longer and is much harder, especially at higher speeds!
Realtime & Accuracy?
• Proper speedbuilding will keep…• Your realtime ready level 20-30 word per minutes
behind your threshold testing level…• Throughout your speedbuilding career.• Allow you to bring your “good writing” up to goal
speed faster
