On visiting Keltruck’s West Bromwich site to check out its used truck stock, we found more than 100 quality vehicles on offer

“The 18-tonners are bombproof,” says Morgan, reassuring us there is plenty of life left in this curtain-sided rigid, despite it having covered 576,000km. This is one of five identical-spec trucks on offer, all of which have been on contract hire to window and door manufacturer Synseal. The dimensions of the truck’s business end are 8.5mx2.7m.

Keltruck sells about 500 used trucks every year through its West Bromwich and Cardiff sites, some 80% of which it originally sold as new. That’s the case with this smart 4x2 R-series, which has been on contract hire with Keltruck for the past five years. “Because we supplied it and maintained it, we know its history,” says new and used sales director David Morgan (above).

The truck features an Opticruise two-pedal transmission, 600-litre fuel tank, sliding fifth wheel and sun-visor. It is well equipped inside too, thanks to its former owner having specified a fridge, air-conditioning and twin bunks. The truck is in great condition and you certainly wouldn’t guess it had covered 517,000km.

2013 Scania P320 DB6x2MNABetween 55% and 60% of all new trucks sold by Keltruck are rigids, so it comes as little surprise to discover that its used lot features a high proportion of them.

This 26-tonner with Fassi 110 crane was supplied by Keltruck from new, and comes with a complete dealer service history. Features include a 7.5mx2.5m flatbed body, manual transmission, top sun-visor spotlights, roof beacons and a rear-mounted toolbox. It has covered 254,000km.

Morgan reminds us that Scanias are popular in the construction industry, and for this reason used examples rarely sit around for long. He says second-hand

P-series 8-leggers are particularly sought after, with operators appreciating their lightweight, tough and fuel-efficient qualities.

Keltruck has a plentiful supply of six-month-old trucks coming back from a short DHL/Jaguar Land Rover contract, which explains why this 66-plate 6x2 tractor is in the yard. The Opticruise-equipped truck, which is fitted with Scania’s Lane Departure Warning System, has covered just 6,000km and still has 30 months of the manufacturer’s R&M package to run. “It’s like buying a new truck, but with savings,” says Morgan.

In June Keltruck will be supplying 10 Next Generation tractors to this same customer, and they will be available to purchase used at the end of 2017.

Keltruck has a pair of these ex-demonstrator Topline tractors, both fitted with Opticruise, sun-visor and bumper spotlights, sliding fifth wheels and twin bunks. This example has covered 215,000km since going on the road in November 2014.

According to Morgan, current model R-series residuals have not been hit by the arrival of the Next Generation trucks. He puts this down to Scania’s decision to phase in the new trucks gradually, and not flood

the market. What has no doubt also helped is the price differential between the two generations of truck. “The current R-series is an excellent vehicle,” he says. “People say the old 3-series was the best Scania ever built, but I reckon these take some beating.”

Next month (June) Keltruck will sell an ex-demonstrator Next Generation truck, which is believed to be the first of its type to be offered on the UK’s used market. The blue R450 is expected to make decent money.

2015 Scania R520 LA6x2/2MNA Topline Griffin This eye-catching Opticruise-equipped V8 tractor is one of the few trucks in the yard that wasn’t supplied new by Keltruck, but it does have a full Scania history. It is one of two matching trucks sourced from a family-run haulier, and both are well equipped. External features include mirror guards, sun-visor and bumper spotlights and an air deflector kit, while inside you will find creature comforts such as air-conditioning and Bluetooth. It has covered 252,000km.

Morgan says V8s are relatively easy to sell and are particularly popular with owner-drivers.
