Text 1.1 Sports Day
It was recess. The students were playing and laughing, but Ming Fai sat alone on a bench in a far corner of the school playground. He looked unhappy. He seemed to be quite disappointed with his results on the school Sports Day last Friday. His best friend, Hon Sing, tried to comfort him.
You know, last Friday, I could have won lots of medals, but I lost many chances.
Ming Fai:
Come on, Ming Fai. Tell me what happened. Maybe I can help you solve your problem.
Hon Sing:
Leave me alone. I just want some peace and quiet.
Ming Fai:
What’s wrong, Ming Fai?Why are you so sad?
Hon Sing:
Hon Sing: I know. No one in our class can run as fast as you do. And you are good at long jump and shot put, too.
Ming Fai: I nearly broke the record in the long jump, but I did not land on both feet, so I was disqualified.
In the shot put, I could throw the farthest . But Miss Wong said that my feet crossed the red line, so I was disqualified again.
Hon Sing:Don’t be disappointed, Ming Fai. You are a very good athlete. Even athletes in the Olympics have to follow the rules. If you pay attention to the rules next year, I think you can win many medals! Cheer up! My mum has made some fishballs, spring rolls and dumplings for me. Would you like to try some?
Hon Sing: Okay! Let’s go to see Miss Wong after school.
Ming Fai: Thank you, Hon Sing. I want to ask Miss Wong about the rules for the sports events so that I can do well in the coming Sports Day.
