By Ernie Smothers [email protected] CLARKSBURG (February 18) In District 13A Girls Basketball Tournament Title action, the Dresden Lady Lions, sparked by Jessica Jones’ 16-point fourth period performance and strong 18 of 21 free throw conversions, were crowned District Champs after defeating the Huntingdon Fillies, 51-35. Huntingdon was led offen- sively by Savannah Dodson (15). In the girls’ Consolation con- test, Big Sandy utilized a pair of 14-point performances by Luz Mena and Marissa Fletcher to narrowly defeat Gleason, 39-36. The Lady Bulldogs were led of- fensively via the scoring of Calay Smith (14) and Briana Jones (13). Lady Lions 51, Fillies 35 Coming out strong offensively in the opening period, Dresden utilized the scoring of Amy McAlpin (5), Kristen Childress (3) and deuces by Jessica Jones, Carrie Hatchel and Allie Phillips to roll out to a 14-6 lead at the end of the first canto. Huntingdon was paced offensively in the first frame via deuces by Madison Ballard, Savannah Dodson and Allee Maxwell. In a low-scoring second frame, Dresden utilized a spread offense to control the ball and outscored the Fillies 9-5 to lead at the half, 23-11. The Fillies were paced of- fensively in the second square by Ballard (2), Maxwell (2) and Hannah Belew (1). Resuming play in the third stanza, Dresden employed time- consuming ball control offense, stifling pressure defense and treys by McAlpin and Hatchel to outscore Huntingdon 6-5 and lead 29-16 at the start of the fourth period. The Fillies were paced offensively in the third period via the scoring of Dodson (2), Morgan McMackin (2) and Payten Plunk (1). Turning up the heat defensively in the fourth period, Huntingdon stole the ball numerous times and quickly cut the Lady Lions lead to 33-28 at the 4:05 mark via three charity swishes and three deuces by Dodson and jump shots by Ballard and Morgan McMackin. Responding, Lady Lion Jones took over the game by netting 8 free throws and converting two deuces in short order as Dresden wid- ened its lead, 47-28, with 1:48 re- maining in regulation. Down but determined, Huntingdon added a trey by Dodson and jump shots by Belew and Maxwell before bowing, 51-35. Storming back, Lady Red Devil Toni Perez scored a deuce in the paint as Big Sandy tied the contest 8-8 at the end of the first period. Gleason’s Smith swished the ny- lons via a three-bomb to ease her team out to an 11-8 lead early in the second canto before Lady Red Devil Luz Mena connected on two consecutive deuces to return the lead to Big Sandy, 12-11. Following another lead change between the combatants, Big Sandy added a Trey from the top of the key by Hannah Carruthers and putback at the buzzer by Perez to lead at the half, 19-13. Big Sandy widened its lead to 24-13 at the 4:48 mark of the third period via trey by Fletcher and Mena deuce off the glass. Gleason countered via a deuce by Jones and trey by Smith to trail at the start of the fourth period, 26-18. Battling back, Gleason nar- rowed the Lady Red Devil lead to 35-28 at the 2:14 mark via a trey and three deuces by Jones. Following Lady Red Devil Mena’s two charity swishes, the Lady Bulldog’s stole the ball successive times and scored via a Jacklyn Montgomery putback and Jones deuce off the glass to close the scoring gap, 37-32. With 50 sec- onds remaining in regulation, Gleason’s Montgomery netted a jumper to narrow Big Sandy’s lead to 37-34. Fouled on the en- suing Lady Red Devil posses- sion, Mena stepped to the line and converted two charity tosses. Racing down court, Lady Bulldog Montgomery drained a deuce to narrow the Big Sandy lead to 39-36 with 16 seconds to play. Stealing the ball, Gleason quickly called timeout. Resuming play, Lady Bulldog Montgomery’s game-tying trey attempt at the buzzer was no good as Big Sandy celebrated its hard-fought, 39-36 win. Big Sandy was led offensively by Mena (14), Fletcher (14), Perez (4), Carruthers (3), Megan Dilda (2) and Rachel Stepp (2). The Mustangs overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to pull out a 58-46 win and earn the district three-seed. In the nightcap, Dresden grew a three- point halftime lead to a 78-59 championship victory before the presentation of the All-District team. All-District selections included District MVP Devon Bailey and teammates Jarvis Pearson and Colton Halter of Clarksburg’s Rockets; DHS Lions Tyler McPeak, Gatlin Hatchel, Joseph Sipes and Austin Daniel; HHS Mustangs Corbin Jordan, Justice Scott and Olajuwon Clark; CHS Tigers Haden Williams and Eiljah Phillips; McKenzie Rebels Hunter Lowe and Trevor Willis; WCHS War Eagles Jamal Glenn and Letrell Huff; Big Sandy’s Zach Phifer and Carroll Academy’s Tre Williams. Rocket Head Coach Mike Limbaugh was named District Coach of the Year. Dresden 78, Clarksburg 59 While the Rockets took a quick 7-2 lead following a 7-0 run featur- ing a Devon Bailey trey and slash- ing lay-up and a Jarvis Pearson hook-shot, the Lions battled back to lead 9-7 as Joseph Sipes collect- ed an old-fashioned three-point play and Tyler McPeak tallied four points. Lion Austin Maxey drained a trifecta at the 4:00 mark and Rocket Colton Halter coun- tered with a trey. Dresden closed the first period on an 8-4 run as McPeak, Sipes, Gatlin Hatchel and Caleb Davidson each scored a field goal as the Rockets trailed, 20-15. Lion Davidson tallied a pair of baskets and McPeak struck in the post as Dresden opened the second canto via a 6-1 run. Rocket Bailey sunk six of seven free throws and a trio of lay-ups during a 12-4, quarter-closing run, though the Lions led at the half, 32-29. The Lions defense limited the Rockets to 11 points in the third block as Bailey, Halter and Spenser Edwards each sank a tri- fecta while Bailey added a jumper. Lion Sipes countered via trey and four of five charity stripe conversions and Maxey added five points, including a three-pointer, to increase Dresden’s lead, 50-40. Lion Sipes and Rocket Bailey exchanged three-point baskets to open scoring in the final frame. Central’s Haden Williams tallied a trio of baskets, Elijah Phillips totaled five points and Zac Douglas con- nected on a three-pointer as the Tigers led, 14-8. Tiger Phillips tallied four points, Williams added a pair of field goals and Paul Ulderich contributed a three-ball in the second canto while Jordan led the Mustang charge with a pair of buckets. Hill, Justice Scott, Barrett Phelps and Codey Parton each aided Huntingdon with a field goal, though Central led, 27- 20, at the half. The Mustang defense stood tall in the third block, limiting the Tigers to six points (all by Phillips). Huntingdon’s Clark drained a pair of treys, Scott tal- lied a pair of baskets and Jordan led scoring in the frame with seven points as Central trailed, 37-33. In the final square Tigers Phillips and Colin Roberts each sank a pair of field goals, but the Mustangs collectively converted 13 of 20 foul shots to grasp the dis- trict three-seed and a 58-46 victory.
