CartoneriaThe ability to create sculptures from paper is known as “cartoneria” (cardboard sculpture). Cartoneria is a popular art form from Mexico that combines a mixture of indigenous knowledge with Spaniard art techniques and is deeply rooted in ancient Mexico’s legends. In this course, we will create fantastic mythological creatures from paper. We will incorporate diverse elements from creatures such as demons, angels and/or dragons to create new and unique forms.

Oaxacan Woodcarving This class is Inspired by the centuries old tradition of Oaxaca animal carvings. You will learn use hand woodcarving tools such as chisels and knives to create fantastic animals, to wonderful, intricate and expressive by nature. This class is for the enthusiastic beginner or the seasoned experienced woodcarver. The history and cultural background of Oaxaca wood carvings, “alebrijes” and other Mexican traditional arts will be introduced. Safety rules in the wood shop, how to read the wood, basic shapes in sculpture, sealing of the art piece, decorating and finishing, from the mere conception of the idea to the exhibition of the artwork will also be covered.

Achieving effective color and light doesn’t have to be difficult. Oil/acrylic/watercolor painters, all levels welcome. We will begin with the basics and discuss materials and equipment that make painting easier and fun. Each class will feature still life setup to work from. Techniques covered will be using light and shade to create convincing volume, how transparency creates depth, and using grays to make visual space in the still life. Should that color be warm or cold? Thick or thin? Mixed with white or pure? Come prepared to paint on the first class. Critique last class. Odorless thinner only please. Here is a wonderful opportunity to explore the luminosity and versatility of watercolor! Beginners get a strong foundation in fundamental painting approaches, including traditional and innovative wash techniques. Variety of subject matter. Basic DrawingThis class designed for beginners as well as advanced individuals that want to inquire deeper into the details of drawing. Students will learn how to manipulate the two dimensions of a paper surface, while exploring such concepts as perspective, seeing light and shadows, line quality, color speed and its affect on the viewer as well as medium usage. We will also look into the math of art by studying landscapes, the face and body. Materials and techniques covered will include paper it’s construction and medium absorption patterns,as well as medium application (no toxic or combustible mediums) The many uses of the eraser will be an emphasis. Some still life drawings will be covered as well as drawing distortions and the abstractions of a set design.

Figure Drawing/Painting LabWe’ll start with a warm up of 5 minute poses, then a long pose for 3 hours. Total model time is 31/2 hours. Participants are welcome to work in any medium - charcoal, oil, acrylic, water-color, pastel. Models will be costumed or partially nude. All poses will use strong lighting. This is an uninstructed workshop, structured to give artists time to work on their own and build on skills acquired in classes. All levels welcome.

This class is good for you if you want to explore your abilities in line drawings or if you want to be able to draw your room, house, environment or your imagination in depth, and based on the rule of perspective. Using principles in architecture asa structure to explore your own artistic abilities in creating rendering, one-point or two-point perspective and illustrations. In this class you will learn to create human figures and/or still life objects by mixing different mediums together. Students will be encouraged to explore various exciting images; photos, newspaper cuts, stencil and/or transferred images. We will dive in to using a variety of mediums, grounds, techniques and styles; acrylic, watercolor, pastel, tile, mirror, wood or just drawing tools. Painting & Drawing From Life: The Portrait and FigureBeginning and continuing painters are invited to paint portraits from a live model. Oil/acrylic/watercolors, all levels welcome. Our model will be draped or costumed. Workshop participants can work on either the portrait or full figure. Easels available, but bring your own portable easel or Pochade box if you prefer. Each class will begin with a demonstration. Model fee is included in the class fee. Participants are welcome to bring in paintings for critique or work from their own photos. We will work from costumed and nude models, both male and female, using short and long poses. This tutorial will cover a variety of approaches and materials. The class will be structured for both beginners and continuing artists who love drawing the human form. Continual instructor demonstrations and individual help will be provided. Emphasis will be on movement and proportion. For the first class please bring a large drawing pad 18” X 24”, vine charcoal, a variety of pencils and tools of your choice. Materials list will be provided on the first day of class.

Life Drawing

Pen and Ink DrawingThe goal for this class is to create lines with character, and ultimately making an image with style. Landscape, architecture, still life or human figure will be the subject matter explored. Abstract images will also be included as options of inspiration. Two approaches for mastering pen&ink drawing will be explored. We will begin with pencil and trace them with pen/ink. Next we will gradually be challenged to directly draw with ink. Volunteers assist as monitors to set-up the chemistry, observe and break down the Darkroom. Our facilities are available to the community for black and white film developing and printing no larger than 11” x 14”. Prior to registration, and lab use, new participants must have a brief over the phone or e-mail interview with the photo coordinator. At the time of your initial arrival, the monitor will give you an orientation that will include Studio One’s safety procedures and participant protocol. Bring your own photo paper and film. No production or commercial work is allowed. Lab time is purchased in 20-hour blocks of time. Patrons use time within 6 months. $90 for 20 hours for Oakland residents.

This class will provide the student the opportunity to “refresh” their skills in the darkroom. This will be a “one to one” instruction in the various printing tech-niques necessary to produce a high quality black and white photographic print. Whether you’ve been out of the darkroom for 20 years or less, you’ll still know some of the basics. Learn about the various darkroom chemicals that are used; the various papers and films that are available and how to control the enlarger during the devel-oping/ printing process. This class will refresh your memory and get you to a proficient level of printing where you can rent darkroom space at Studio One and print on your own. Individual instruction should be scheduled in advanced.

When your traditional black & white photographs don’t give you the impact you would like, consider tak-ing a darkroom printing intensive. This is a “one to one” darkroom printing intensive with an instructor who has many years of darkroom printing experience. Learn various techniques in the photo printing process: dodging and burning; masking, darkroom chemistry, ton-ing, using correct printing filters, lens & filter choices and selecting the correct photo paper for your print. This is a 3 hour intensive. Select a time and day that will work for you and the instructor to meet. Student provides their own photo paper. Prior darkroom printing expe-rience required .

Beginning Digital Photography and the Internet

Learn the art of traditional photography and see how the masters did it. In this class students will become proficient in camera settings, develop-ing film, composition, printing silver gelatin images. This class is for all levels of photographers. Learn basics and advanced topics. This is the foundation for enhancing how one sees an image, whether it is in digital or traditional. This class is designed to take all levels of photographers, the novice and experienced, to the next level.

Having trouble getting your digital camera to give you the results you want? Learn all the features and controls of your digital camera. We’ll discuss making bet-ter creative decisions, how to control lighting, move-ment and flash. Basic image editing software will be discussed. Bring your camera manual and ques-tions to class for individual help. The Instructor will tailor advice on editing software to the software the students already use. Metal Jewelry DesignThis class emphasizes building basic/intermediate knowledge of jewelry design and construction. Beginning students will design their own jewelry and construct their design pieces using the fundamental techniques of soldering, sawing, filing, finishing, and

basic bezel setting. Lectures, demonstrations, and handouts will provide the basis of any technique needed. Intermediate students will progress through more advanced techniques (forging, cold connections, etching, etc). Jewelry will be made from metal sheet and wire. Brass, copper, and tools are provided. This three hour workshop offers the opportunity to learn to frame previously fused flat panels for display. Students will use a metal channel to cut and solder a frame for their fused glass designs. Patinas may be used to change the color of the metal, wire loops can also be constructed for hanging. Participants must bring a previously fused glass panel no larger than 10” in any one dimension.

Glass Fusing and Slumping Lab

Fusing and Slumping GlassThis class is an introduction to the wonderful world of kiln-formed glass. Layers of compatible glass are fused together to create artistic objects including jewelry, tiles, and picture frames. Glass can also be slumped into or over molds to create barrettes, small plates, and votive candle holders. Glass cutting, compatibility testing, use of “frits” (crushed glass) and metal inclusions are among the techniques presented and Information on the use of kilns and firing processes is also offered. You must have taken Stained Glass class for 3 sessions at studio one. Ceramic Tile Workshop

This is a great opportunity to learn how to make your own tiles for your home decoration. In this class you will have an introduction to materials, decorating bisque tiles with under-glazes, stein oxides, ceramic pencils and chalks. Students will make green-ware tiles using: stenciling technique, marbling, graffito, slip inlay, and texture design. Making a simple plaster mold for a tile reproduction of the original bass-relief design will be covered. Students are encouraged to bring their own old towel, ruler, pencil, and sketch book. Also, if you have some left over commercial tiles (glazed or unglazed).

ams CIT Program Mandatory

Training WeekThis is a week long training course held during the first two weeks of summer camp for any potential Summer 2015 CITs. Any interested CIT must sign up for at least one of these two weeks to be a CIT throughout the summer. Participants are welcome to participate in both weeks, one week meets the minimum requirement.

This internships guides students to become important assets to employers. Students will assist teachers in a classroom setting, and learn invaluable leadership, organi-zational, interpersonal, and customer service skills. This program is geared toward 12 to 16 year old, and upon graduation each student receives an official certificate of completion. Participants must attend at least one of the Madatory Training Weeks.

CIT Summer Internship

This one week over night camp will become a memory of a life time. Kids will enjoy creating art and participating ecreation activities in the beautiful backdrop of Feather River located in Quincy California. Nature walks, star gazing and water activities will inspire their creative juices. Studio One Art Center’s Master Artist will accompany us on this trip and guide youth through a variety of creative and expressive activities. All participants must attend the mandatory family meeting on Thursday, July 23rd at 6:30pm at Studio One Art Center. Pre-registration is required for this activity. $250 for 5 night includes room and board. Limited scholarships are available.

Bay Area Fam-CampThis is a must do for families who have never camped before!In partnership with Bay Area Park District, Fam-Camp aims to connect families to parks and nature through outdoor recreation and camping programs. Fam-Camp provides camping equipment, group camp sites and a whole weekend of family fun activities. Programs will be provided by OPR Explorers, California State park Staff and Volunteers.

Camp at a beautiful bay area parks. All camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, etc.) and meals will be provided. Family meeting will be held on July 11th at 10am at Studio One. Program & packing lists will be provided at this meeting. Site and Date will be annouced on February 27th. Call for more information and to be added to our waiting list.
