The Perilous Texas Adventures of Mark DionThrough May 17, 2020Artist Mark Dion retraces the footsteps of several 19th-century explorers in Texas, collecting materials to form a site-specific exhibition you can see only at the Carter. One of the most well-regarded living artists today, Dion is part explorer and part historian; part naturalist and part collector of curiosities. More than 150 years after the Texas explorers he followed, The Perilous Texas Adventures of Mark Dion enhances our understanding of the past and ultimately brings it to life in the present day.Free#DionAdventures

A joint exhibition by Caro Thompson Jackson and Amy Llewellyn Biggs:

These two artists share a joy of color and whimsy. Caro’s style borders impression-ism, mainly concentrating on landscapes in oil. While mountains and southwest images capture her fancy, a recent trip to Guatemala sparked her love of color, inspiring new work. Amy leans more toward the abstract. Her series of charming, stylized portraiture is done on backgrounds with deep family ties. Acrylic, watercolor, and pastel make up her mediums. It is a happy exhibition. Come see their world through rose colored glasses.

In a Different Light: Winslow Homer and Frederic RemingtonThis exhibition unites works of art by Winslow Homer, considered by many to be the greatest American artist of the late nineteenth century, alongside work by Frederic Remington, the premier painter of the West. Both artists began their careers rising to fame through their illustration work for popular publications. They each transformed their art in their late careers, obscuring storytelling under shade of storm and night. Reduced to their essential elements, the paintings on display invite the viewer to create their own narrative and meaning.

Caribbean Fantasia by Raphaël Barontini

Paris-based artist Raphaël Barontini uses pho-tographic imagery on textiles to create installa-tions that conjure spectacle, celebration and ritual. From large-scale colorful banners and flags to items of customized clothing, his vibrant printed fabric work combines pattern and portraiture that is both eye-catching and alluring. His juxtaposition of seductive surfaces – playful fringe and tassels against silky drapery and soft leather – creates a dynamic gallery environment that suggests performance and improvisation.

the art of performance: Featuring selected works on paper from the TCU Permanent Art Collections

The Art of Performance presents a selection of works on paper from TCU’s Permanent Collection. Although these works are very different from one another, they all explore the broad concept of performance. “Performance” here encompasses music, theatre, festivity, and artistic creation. This exhibition also addresses the importance of audience and community participation. The work is dynamic, unexpected and presents audience members with a new perspective. This exhibition considers audience as a vital part of a performance, and we invite you to be a part of that audience.

compulsion: Works by Aimee Cardoso. On view through March 31st

“Compulsion is a group of new works which are direct depictions of my day to day brain functions. My work is an escape from the two lives I lead as a museum arts educator, and arts leader in the community. I am constantly torn between the two sides of my brain: left and right. That duality represented in these fabric jumbles; some are more tightly rendered, while others are looser, giving an unfinished look. I find comfort in these familiar folds of fabric. The chance to lose control in these paintings in ways I cannot in other aspects of my life is freeing. The loss of control and the creation of imperfection makes the real more interesting, giving the viewer, and myself, a place for the mind to get lost.”-Aimee Cardoso

GEMS – Michelle Benoit, Jeff Keller, Arno Kortshot, Steve Murphy

Clean lines, crisp forms, & strong color are used by each of these artists to explore relation-ships among these elements. Michelle Benoit layers transparent & opaque materials to create delicate, geologically inspired, light-revealing wall-reliefs. Working in a mixture of resin, clay, & pigment, Jeff Kellar situates aluminum panels in space & shadow that display depth & intensity with a focus on objectness. Arno Kortschot combines architectural com-ponents that synthesize to yield qualities of minimalism & the organic. Steve Murphy designs simple forms which reveal calm & subtle complexities of their geometry, while at the same time assembling properties that create an aura of mystery. Each artist is unique yet holds in common an aesthetic presentation connecting their work.

The story behind BLK EYE Vodka started with a bold idea. From that, we created something entirely unique. With 100% Texas roots from farm to bottle, BLK EYE is the first vodka crafted by hand from black-eyed peas. Every bottle doubles as a showcase for an original Texas artist, and $1 from every bottle purchased goes back into supporting the local arts community. We set out to take the fine art of distilling in an all-new direc-tion and the result is a smooth-tasting stroke of genius. At BlackEyed Distilling Co., we just believe an ultra-premium experience should be evident from the first sip. 2017 Global Spirit Awards Double Gold Medal and Best Traditional Vodka Winner.
