Community visits AUS INFORMATION CENTRE On the initiative of locals, members of the Aus community established the Aus Community Conservation Trust (ACCT) in 2004. With money from development aid and nature conservation funds, the Aus Information Centre was eventually built. The most important goals are:

- Increase visitor awareness of the attractions of the area, and the facilities of the centre. - Raise funding for community projects through rental income and sale of handicrafts and homemade

cakes and pastries - Tourism training opportunities for the young people in the community - Increase community awareness of the ecological and economic significance of nature

THE LIVING MUSEUM OF THE MAFWE The Living Museum of the Mafwe people opened in February 2008 and gives an authentic insight into the traditional culture of the Mafwe. Locals in the little village of Singalamwe demonstrate their traditional craftsmanship and entertain through singing, dancing and games. The Living Museum brings direct benefit to the Mafwe community through entrance fees and sales of traditional crafts from the museum shop as well as maintaining their traditional lifestyle. OVAHIMBA VILLAGE A guided tour to this village allows an insight into today’s way of life of the OvaHimba people; their ancient traditions and beliefs combined with the influence of “civilisation”. Income generated through visitors helps to sustain this tribe and support the many orphaned or abandoned children, enabling them to grow up in the self-conscious spirit of their ancestors as well as to receive school education to face the challenges of the future. LUCKY KINDERGARDEN IN “DRC” SETTLEMENT The Lucky Kindergarden was founded in 2000 by Meme Ndeshi Launa Paulus in the Democratic Resettlement Community, “DRC”, the poorest suburb of Swakopmund. Meme Launa currently cares for 27 children, who would otherwise be spending their days alone or on the streets while their parents search for work. The crèche is funded by private donations and contributions by parents where possible. Meme Launa, through her dedication and kindness, is helping to make a difference in the lives of some of the most vulnerable children.
