    =

The Yamuna Biodiversity Park is envisaged to play an important role in imparting Nature

Education particularly to school and college students, who are the decision-makers of tomorrow.

The park with its developing ecosystems, which are in various stages of development, provides a

good opportunity to learn a out prominent species of plants and animals, seed germination,

ioremediation, ecosystem redevelopment, food we s, and life history strategies.

woodlands to mention a few. The communities are developed y massive plantation

programmes, some have already developed canopies and have attracted animals such as the

monitor li&ard, civet, ungle cat and Nilgai, which were never found efore here.

The Yamuna Biodiverstity Park has ecome a home for iologically rich wetlands, grassland

communities, a wide variety of fruit yielding species and an a undance of medicinal her s. t has

emerged as the capital s most visited pu lic place and prominent center for learning and

understanding the environment, The Park also comprises a native flora and fauna which used to

e#ist a $"" years ago and then ecame e#tinct locally. t further, acts as a natural conservation

site for specific group of endangered plants. The park features two ma or &ones - the visitor &one

    and the nature reserve &one.

3There are two wetlands in the park which simulate natural water odies. /ne of them is a out $.0

1m long and narrow while the other is open and spread over two hectares. +part from migratory

irds, these wetlands have a rich a2uatic diversity of inverte rates, turtles, fish and

phytoplanktons. There is also a utterfly park that is an e#tremely ideal place for all the photo

fanatics. 3ere is the central enclosed areas where the flowering plants are grown, which attract

    the utterflies.

There are $" mounds encircling the valley, each of which depicts the different ecosystems found

along the Yamuna )iver Basin, especially the lower 3imalayas ('hivaliks*. +s a result of this,

one can o serve more than two do&en varieties of forest landscapes, apart from the grasslands

that dominate a ma or portion of the landscape. The est time to e#plore this mini kingdom of

flora and fauna is from /cto er to +pril.

t is now well understood that the last century has seen unprecedented loss of ecosystems that

flourished on the anks of river Yamuna, the 'iwalik foothills, and the northern limits of the

+ravallis. This has occurred primarily owing to ha itat conversion and ur ani&ation. The uni2ue

ha itats in these areas har oured e#traordinary diversity of flora and fauna, which are now either

lost or highly diminished. /ne of the ma or o ectives of the Biodiversity Parks is to create

refugia for such iodiversity so that is can e conserved for posterity.

n a short span of four years, the dedicated team of professional and volunteers at the Park have

een a le to ring ack a large num er of plants and animals and recreate representative

communities of plants and animals of the terrestrial and a2uatic regions and ecosystems .

n a short span of four years, more than !""" species of plant and animals have een rought

rapid degradation )iver Yamuna and 5elhi ridge and in turn the ecology and environment of

5elhi. Environmental resources have almost lost their life supporting potentials and ecosystems

have lost their resilience and natural self-sustaining ameliorative capa ilities. Therefore, the

ur an population must e made to reali&e that unless immediate steps are taken to remedify the

situation and change the attitude towards the environment the human species itself is at risk.

    Dis,ussions:

Yamuna Biodiversity park is one of its kind .Though eing a great lover of flora and fauna, it

was my first visit to any iodiversity park .+nd indeed this trip has left ehind many important

and great e#periences into my diary. had got to see many different kinds of plants which we

donFt often see them. Though we had E'G+P+5E intra college fest on that day , my trip to theY+4:N+ B /5 =E)' TY P+)1 made my day and indeed anything in the three day fest

couldnFt compete with the e#perience had gained at the iodiversity park . The guide there was

really awesome and had given ample of his time in showing us different kinds of plants and few

irds made me e#tensively happy . was disappointed as got to wait for these many days to

e#perience such a eautiful trip. Though only concern had was the trip was for very short time

. f this could e managed for the ne#t time , it will definitely e a great e#perience to everyone

importantly to the fauna and flora lovers . would like to thank 5 4 T) ' 1+'1/:T ' sirmaking me to en oy this trip .
