Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time - In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks the rich young man to give away all that he has in order to have treasure in heaven. But he is unable to free himself from his possessions, and so he goes sadly away. Does what I own keep me from following Jesus?

MASS INTENTIONS FOR THIS WEEK:

Dear Parishioners, As Respect for Life month continues, we are extremely disappointed that the Assisted-Suicide measure was signed by the governor this last week. While the measure is set to become law, we nonetheless as Catholics stand for other values and are truly counter-cultural in that we understand

that all human life is a gift from God and that only He has supreme authority over it. We will want to continue our work in the helping others to gain knowledge and understanding of the issues involved so that we can assist them in the formation of conscience in the light of faith, and bring the message that every human life is sacred -- even in the midst of suffering. The message of the cross is a transforming mystery, and its spiritual significance provides us with the basis of finding meaning and value in suffering. In Christ we can even find purpose in it. Because suffering is redemptive! We stand not only for a Risen Christ, but also for a Crucified Christ, a Suffering Christ, a Redeeming Christ. That is why Saint Paul was able to tell the Colossians: "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of His body, which is the Church." (1:24) Let us pray for, and out of love stand with all those of our brothers and sisters who suffer in any sort of way. Devotedly yours, Fr. Gabe

Reflections on Today’s Readings:

FOCUS: The example of Jesus’ life and His teachings gives us concrete guidance on how we are to live, so we may come to share eternal life in heaven. Jesus does not condemn the rich man in today’s Gospel. Rather, with a gaze of love and compassion, He instructs the rich man to let go of that which stands in the way of receiving the gift of salvation, namely, his riches. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading from the Book of Wisdom speaks of how wisdom overshadows all the riches of the world. The second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that being steeped in Scripture helps us to be open to God’s will for us. The Gospel tells of the rich man coming to Jesus and asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. .

THE REMARKABLE SALESMAN Christopher Columbus was the world’s most remarkable salesman. He started out not knowing where he was going. When he arrived, he didn’t know where he was. And when he returned, he didn’t know where he had been. And he did it all on a big cash advance and he received a repeat order. —Anonymous

Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

When secrets become dangerous There is no better time of year to review the important family rules that

help to keep all children safe. It takes just a few moments to review with your children what to do in an emergency, who the special and safe adults in their life are, and the importance of not keeping secrets. Some secrets, like a gift for a special occasion, can be fun and safe to keep. Secrets that hurt others, involve any kind of unsafe or inappropriate touching or anything that bothers a child – are secrets that are NOT safe to keep. Help your child understand the difference. building event. You may support on-line at St. A’s school website at school.st-anastasia.org or by check paid to St. Anastasia Catholic School (forms are in the back of the Church). From a current Eucharistic Minister: “Being a Eucharistic Minister makes me feel more like a part of the St. A's community. It is a great way to get to know the priests and other people in the church that you might not meet otherwise. It also gives me even more appreciation for the Eucharist and what it means in my life, a stronger connection with Jesus.” If you are interested in finding a satisfying ministry that allows you to serve the Lord and your fellow parishioners, consider becoming a Eucharistic Minister. There will be a training class for new Eucharistic Ministers on Wednesday, October 21st at 7:30 P.M. Please contact Jan & Herb Masi at 310.641.2819 or [email protected] for more information.

Ministry in Community…

FACT OF LIFE Sometimes life can seem without hope. Imagine having nowhere to go. Homeless. Pregnant. Jobless. And then finding yourself WHERE NEW LIVES BEGIN… Located in a beautifully charming large family home on the west side of Los Angeles, Harvest Home is the place where new lives begin for women who are homeless and pregnant in the Los Angeles area. In addition to creating a warm, stable living environment, their residential program provides targeted case management, weekly therapy and in-home classes aimed at helping women regain their independence. Pope Francis calls us to help the less fortunate; Harvest Home is a beautiful example of his message in full swing. If you feel called to support this effort with your time, talents, or financial support, go to theharvesthome.net, or call 310.452.1223

Kids Living Faith: Twenty–eighth Sunday In Ordinary Time,

October 11th, 2015. “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? .” - Mark 10:17 Ever get the feeling you’re forgetting something? The man in today’s gospel has followed the Ten Commandments, but he’s got a sneaking suspicion that he’s missed something. But what? Jesus knows that for his man, money keeps him from loving God and being completely happy. But the man doesn’t get it, and he walks away sad. Everyone has “stuff” that gets in the way of loving God. It might be sins or things that seem to make us happy for a while. Sometimes we’re so involved in our sins we can’t see how they hurt other and us. Jesus can help us see where we’re going wrong. He can get us on the right track.

“Jesus, help me see when something I’m doing gets in the way of loving you.”

St. Anastasia Fall Film Study Save the Dates!!

Our Fall film Study will take place on Thursday 10/8, 10/15 and 10/22 in the

Parish Hall (Basement) at 7:30 pm. We will be viewing and discussing the 2014 film “The Good Lie.” Although Reese Witherspoon receives the top billing, the real stars of the movie are the Lost Boys and Girls of Sudan who were orphaned in the Sudanese civil war of 1983, survived against all odds and were finally offered shelter, first in a refugee camp and then in America. Their faith and courage see them through, along with their warmth and humor. We will be showing a third of the film each evening, followed by discussion, so there is no need to preview the movie, although you are welcome to do so. For further information please contact Mark or Shelley Calde @ 310-641-1157.
