Food Drive at St. Bonaventure School

This month, as part of our Faith initiative for FALCONS, we will be having a food drive for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. As part of this initiative, we are asking all students to bring one or more items for the food bank. To collect items, boxes will be placed in each Homeroom.

To add an extra incentive for students, points will be awarded for participation, please see chart below. These points will be combined with the points from our TA Challenge on Oct 31 to determine which class has the most points. Please have all food items in by Oct 30 so we can get the participation points calculated.

Auditions for Seussical Jr. the Musical!

St. Bonaventure is putting on a musical in March. We are looking for singers, actors, and dancers who are a triple-threat. We are holding auditions for lead roles from November 5-16. Interested students should read the audition package, prepare their song and monologue and sign up for an audition time on the list outside the band room. The cast list will be posted November 23rd and rehearsals will begin in December. Please see Ms. Stevens or Ms. Read with any questions.

For the month of October, St. Bonaventure will be focusing on developing the virtue of Faith with our students as part of our FALCONS initiative. To build this virtue with the school, St. Bonaventure will be running a Food Drive for St. Vincent de Paul that will be culminating with a TA challenge on Oct. 31st. We will also share this virtue over the intercom and in our daily teachings.

We are Falcons As part of our St. Bonaventure branding campaign, we have created a new logo with the motto, "We are Falcons". We are wanting to duplicate our logo in Spanish and we are looking for your help in choosing your favorite phrasing for 'We are Falcons" in Spanish. Code Club Nov 6 – Dec 11 Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30. For beginners between 10 -12 years old - Fish Creek and Shawnessy branches of Calgary Public Library are offering an opportunity to create their own games and design websites.

codeTEEN: Intro to Web Design where 12-17 year olds will learn HTML & CSS, to create customized web sites. Wed Nov 7 – Dec 12 6-& 7:30 at Fish Creek.

Level Up! Gaming Club for video and tabletop gamers between the ages of 13 and 17 at Shawnessy branch Nov 1 – Dec 20 3:30 – 5.

Wrestling time is here! Wrestling season will begin on Monday Oct 29, 2018. All students are welcome to participate on the wrestling team, however, as per district safety regulations, no student will be allowed to attend a practice without a mouth guard. No exceptions are permitted.

Students are encouraged to attend practice regularly to ensure their skill development and therefore their own safety. To attend the wrestling meet, students must attend a minimum of seven practices. To qualify for City Finals, students must have attended ten practices and they must have wrestled at the wrestling meet.

Our wrestling meet will be held on November 21st @ St. Bonaventure School from 3:30-7:00pm

City Finals will be held at Notre Dame high school on Friday Dec 7 from 3:30-8:30pm for girls and Saturday Dec 8 from 8:00am-2:00pm for the boys.

Grade 9s at - Serving our Community Over the next couple months, our grade nine students will be doing some community service. Each homeroom will spend a morning at the Drop-In Centre to receive a facility tour of their main location downtown and then to volunteer in their store. Each homeroom has their own assigned date. Buses will leave St. Bonaventure @ 9:00am for a 9:30 arrival at the DI and then pick up from the DI at 11:30 at the conclusion of the tour.

Then each class will need at least (5-6) parent volunteers to make the field trip a success. If you are interested, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

Choose Safety over Convenience

We would like to thank the parents who are being more conscious about where they park to pick up their child from school. Parents are using the side streets and staying out of the bus pick up area and parking lot.

The traffic tip for this month is 5 meters

You cannot park

• within 5 meters of a corner • on the approach to a stop or yield sign • on either side of a marked crosswalk

5 meters is longer than you think so that parking spot at the corner is not a parking spot.

All students, parents, and staff are invited to pray the Rosary at St. Bonaventure Church Beginning Saturday, October 13th, the Month of the Holy Rosary, children, teens and families are welcome to come say the Rosary after every 9:00 am Saturday Mass at St. Bonaventure Parish. The Rosary is a 20 minute meditation on the mysteries of the life of Jesus. We reflect on five events of His life as we recite five sets of prayers; including the Our Father, 10 Hail Mary, and the Glory be to the Father (using beads to keep count of each decade of prayers). Calgary Flames and St. Bonaventure

As with last year, the Flames are offering a three-game promotion to allow for fundraising at schools. If St. Bonaventure school community buys more than 20 tickets for a game, our school will receive a portion back to the school at the end of the season. For those schools that do not sell the minimum 20, the funds will be pooled and donated to the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation. Last year, St. Bonaventure received $350 and over $10,000 went to various CCSD schools and over $5,000 went to the Foundation. (See attached image)

Go Flames Go!

Canteen at St. Bonaventure St. Bonaventure School recognizes that meal-time and having access to good nutrition is vital to our students’ ability to learn, concentrate, and develop socially. Our canteen offers various items for purchase over each lunch period, plus limited numbers of a first-come, first-serve “Special of the Day” delivered by local vendors*. To increase access for more students and staff, Parent Council also enhances the canteen program by coordinating special weekly lunches in place of the daily special with a broader variety of vendors using Healthy Hunger, an on-line ordering website service. Please visit www.healthyhunger.ca for easy instructions on how to sign up or to update your account to place orders, and view upcoming lunches at the school. Those who’ve signed up will receive a helpful email notification from Healthy Hunger as lunches are added, as well as two days prior to an order deadline which is midnight, 5 days prior to each date. Partial proceeds from the canteen and our Healthy Hunger lunches also go directly to St. Bonaventure in support of our school needs. Thank you!

Flu Season Awareness

Flu season is also approaching. Please remind students about proper hygiene practices regarding hand-washing. The school is equipped with hand-sanitizer machines in every classroom and in the hallways to help stop the spread of disease. Individuals should cover their mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoid touching their eyes or mouth. Students who are ill should remain home; however, please notify the school to report a student’s absence.

Allergy Aware St. Bonaventure is an “allergy aware” school. As such it is recommended that families provide lunches and snacks free of nut base products to help create a safe environment for children with allergies. All of our school staff, including lunch room, are aware of any students with severe allergies. While school administrators and staff continually work towards an allergy-safe environment, zero risk cannot be reasonably guaranteed. Prevention is, of course, the best approach for reducing the risk of a severe reaction.

they are $30 each while supplies last.

Healthy Hunger – Sign-up Genius!

Our Healthy Hunger Parent volunteer crew is a crucial part of our weekly lunch program at St. Bonaventure. Volunteers are typically needed on Mondays (or a periodic Tuesday), from 11 - 12:30 pm to set up a few tables and support the student crew during lunch distribution. RECYCLING FUNDRAISER St. Bonaventure School has a fundraising project that does not directly hit you pockets and saves you time waiting in line to drop off you monthly bottle recycling at the depot. Proceeds will be used to support our school community.

We will accept common items accepted at bottle recycling depots: juice box containers, pop/juice cans, plastic containers, tetra packs, glass bottles, milk jugs, etc.

Please help us by dropping off your recycling alongside the bike racks near the parking lot anytime Friday morning, before 12:30pm.

Our recycling dates this year are:
