St. Brigid’s Parish, Killester Parish Newsletter April 2015 Dear Friends, In the first week of April this year we celebrate the holiest of all weeks, when we recall and liturgically celebrate the Passion, Death, Resurrection and Glorification of Our Lord. These events, known as the Paschal or Easter Mystery, engage us in a very particular way. Through our participation in these ceremonies we ourselves are saved now. It is as though a tsunami wave of God’s saving love occurred 2,000 years ago, and its life-giving effects are reaching us this Easter in a new way. The Easter Triduum, which is a single three-day event, begins with the Mass of the Last Supper and continues with the Crucifixion and burial on Good Friday before cul- minating in the glorious Resurrection on Easter Sunday morning. It is often forgotten that the Church then celebrates this event for 50 days and views it as one great continuous Sunday ending at Pentecost! This holiest of seasons in the Church’s calen- dar focuses on Christ’s risen life that has overcome not only death itself for Our Lord, but also for us. “Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life, Lord Jesus come in glory. Death, which awaits us all, is overcome by Christ’s victory over sin and death and be- comes a gateway to everlasting life. There is a beautiful phrase in the Church’s funeral prayers at the final commendation when we pray: One day we shall joyfully greet N. again when the love of Christ which conquers all things, destroys even death itself”. Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration takes place in our Church on Monday and Wednesday after 10.00 am Mass until 3.00 pm each day and on Thursday night between 7.00 and 8.00 pm. If you are prepared to ‘watch for one hour’ of adoration per week you will be very welcome. We also invite everyone to spend some time - even a few min-utes – in prayer and reflection. Each Thursday night for April, May and June we will be praying especially for families and the many trou-bles and challenges they face, as well as for the Synod on the Family taking place in Rome next October. On Thursday, 30th April, 2015 at 7.00 pm there will be a Mass of the Blessed Sacrament in St. Brigid’s Church for our Adoration Group and afterwards there will be light refreshments in the Pastoral Resource Cen-tre.. All Parishioners are welcome.

“You shall be my Witnesses”

The programme, held on four Monday nights throughout March for parents/guardians of our Confirmation Candidates, was extremely well attended and I would like to congratulate the parents for their interest and coopera-tion. Its purpose was to assist parents in helping their own children prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This sacrament is the third and final stage in the full initiation of a person into Church membership. Baptism and Holy Communion have already been celebrated, and Confirmation completes the journey of initiation. Baptism is focused on the children themselves as the Holy Spirit first comes to share his life with them, and that life is then nourished by frequent reception of “the Bread of Life” in Holy Communion. Confirmation however, brings a new dimension giving as it does a positive impulse to the candidates to live a new kind of life, by witnessing to Christ by their actions and values, and remaining faithful despite trials in playing their part in the Church’s life. Simply put: “Baptism is about my being saved. Confirmation is about others being saved through me !!” The Holy Spirit, first received in Baptism, through a fresh outpouring of his gifts in Confirmation enables us to witness to Christ. Confirmed Christians, through the use of these gifts given by the Spirit of Love, reap throughout their lives a rich harvest of fruits. It might be helpful to recall from our own Confirmation the gifts and fruits of the Spirit which we received:

The Gifts of the Spirit of Love The Fruit of the Spirit is Love (Gal. 5:22). This Love expresses itself in many ways:

Wisdom Joy - is Love celebrating; Understanding Peace - is Love contented and at ease; Right Judgement Patience- is Love enduring; Courage Gentleness- is Love among others; Knowledge Goodness- is Love in action; Reverence Faithfulness- is Love in struggling; Awe and Wonder Meekness- is Love learning; Self-Control- is Love in training;

Finally, a sincere thank you to parents and children who assisted so willingly and helpfully at our recent Service of Light. Fr. Alex.

My hands were busy through the day I didn’t have much time to play The little games you asked me to, I didn’t have much time for you. I’d wash your clothes; I’d sew and cook But when you’d bring your picture book And ask me please to share your fun I’d say, “A little later, son.” I’d tuck you all safe at night And hear your prayers, turn out the light, Then tiptoe softly to the door I wish I’d stayed a minute more.

For life is short, and years rush past A little boy grows up so fast No longer is he at your side His precious secrets to confide. The picture books are put away There are no children’s games to play No goodnight kiss no prayers to hear, That all belongs to yesteryear. My hands once busy, now lie still, The days are long and hard to fill. I wish I might go back and do, The little things you asked me to.
