REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 DECEMBER 29, 2019

My Family of Brothers and Sisters,

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family and are invited to eavesdrop into the life of the Holy Family and learn from their life of love and devo on, especially in mes of uncertainty and fear. This feast is a rela ve newcomer on the calendar, first observed in 1921 on the Sunday within the octave of Epiphany and then in 1969 moved to the Sunday within the octave of Christmas. First and fore-most, this Sunday is part of the Christmas season.

In our first reading from the book of Sirach, the writer of which was a pious Jew who lived in the second century, he speaks of the family. Although the emphasis in the verses seems to be on the obli-ga on of children to their parents, there is a profound lesson here for parents too. “Like father, like son” is an old and some mes true saying. If parents give their children the example of a life of obedience to the laws of God, and to their country-their children will in turn, carry out their du es to God, to their parents and to their fellow man. Children are a gi from God, a gi for this life to be the joy of your young years and a help and comfort in your old age.

Paul, in today’s second reading counsels us and the Colossians that we and they are called to put on love. The love and care that Jesus showed toward all people he encountered was surely rooted in the love and care he experienced growing up in his home in Nazareth. Let us listen today for the ways in which we can show our love for our parents, our spouses and our children.

During this holy season of Christmas, Jesus, Mary and Joseph should be remembered frequently by every Chris an. To help us remember them and above all to strive to imitate them, the Church has dedicated this Sunday to the memory of the Holy Family. The message of today’s gospel story is a message of encouragement and consola on for every one of us. If the holiest and greatest family that ever lived on earth suffered the fears, trials and hardships we hear about today and suffered them all for our salva on, surely we should be ready and willing to suffer and bear with the trials God sends our way.

Today’s gospel provides two accounts of important journeys. The Holy Family flees for their lives to Egypt because of the persecu on of King Herod who is about to slaughter the Holy Innocents. What parent wouldn’t be able to imagine the fear of Mary for her child? Their future is unknown and they can depend only on each other and God. Their example serves to encourage and strengthen families who flee for their lives from conflict and violence. Later they travel back to Nazareth, the hometown of Mary. Today’s feast is an invita on to give thanks to God for the gi of our families. When we look at people who spend much of their me caring for babies, young children, elderly parents or disabled family members, we realize the power of love. The family is the first school of love and it is that love that enables us to dedicate our me and energy to the care of those who need it. Love fosters compassion, kindness, pa ence and mercy as Paul teaches us today.

My wish for each of you is that this Christmas season brings goodwill between na ons and builds peace with love as the founda on of all family rela onships.

The Holy Family as our Model

This first Sunday of Christmas is the Feast of the Holy Family. The reading from Ma hew tells us the story of the Holy Family fleeing to Egypt to escape the persecu on set forth by Herod. Our own hearts are taken to the scene as we imagine the terror of leaving our homes and lives behind to escape danger. The Blessed Virgin and Joseph helpless except at trus ng in God. That model is ours in so many ways, especially as our families struggle to keep everything together during these very difficult mes. We are o en helpless, except in learning to trust God.

Our families at St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish School are on break this week but were sent off with Christ in their hearts. We spent Advent preparing for Christ, collec ng toys, sending cards to our troops, bringing joy through the music of our Christ-mas Program, and our final Mass before leaving – Jesus is the reason for our Christmas, and our children learn that well.

They bring that joy with them into their families, and their families are changed forever. Our families are brought together during kindergarten and then work together for nine years to make this the best Catholic educa on available for their children. They worship together, they play together, they work together and they pray together. And in the middle of all the work and effort and fellowship, transforma on takes place. Our families grow more and more toward our model, the Holy Family.

May God richly bless your family this first Sunday of Christmas with the joy the Holy Family received at reaching safety in Egypt, and then once again returning (near) home to the town called Nazareth. May Jesus always keep our families safe. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Thank you and God Bless, Telephone: (951) 684-1091 Fax: (951) 684-4936

Do you have just two hours to give on Wednesdays for our Parish children? The Faith Formation Staff and

Parish need YOU to help these children prepare for receiving their Sacra-ments, learn about our Roman Catholic Tra-ditions, live out the Gospel and journey in our faith together. The rewards are many. Please pray to see if our Lord is calling you to this Ministry. If interested or for ques-tions, please call Olivia, 781-9855 x 25. **Please note any adult (ages 18+) working with children on a regular basis as a volun-teer will need to follow certain guidelines and training before being allowed to help. Please don't let this turn you away. It's for the safety of all involved.

St.Catherine’sSundayPre-SchoolandChildren’sHomily are looking for new volunteers to help our youngest pa-rishioners! Children’s Pre-School (ages 3 – 5) is held during 8:30 and 10:15 morning Masses. Volunteers can contribute their time & talent while teaching and/or assisting in the classroom. Sunday Pre-School is a rewarding program that enriches the heart and soul through the eyes of a child. Children’s Homily (1st grade - 6th grade) is held during 8:30 and 10:15 morning Masses. Volunteers help to continue faith-based values by teaching children “Liturgy of the week” while parents attend mass in church. Schedules are lexible and on a rotating basis. Training is provided with each minis-try. Please keep in mind all volun-teers must comply with the Diocesan volunteer policy. If you are interested or would like more information about our programs, please contact Rachel at 781-9855 x 26.
