Ignatius of Antioch (c. 35 – c. 107) was an early Christian writer and bishop of Antioch. En route to Rome, where he met his martyrdom, Ignatius wrote a

series of letters. This correspondence now forms a central part of the later collection known as the Apostolic Fathers. His letters also serve as an example of early Christian theology. Important topics they address include ecclesiology, the sacraments, and the role of bishops. In speaking of the authority of the church, he was the first to use the phrase "catholic church" in writing, which is still in use to this day.

St. Luke is one of the Four Evangelists. The early church fathers ascribed to him authorship of both the Gospel and the book of Acts of the Apostles, which

would mean Luke contributed over a quarter of the text of the New Testament, more than any other author. Christians since the faith's early years have regarded him as a saint. He is believed to have been a martyr, reportedly as having been hanged from an olive tree. The Church venerates him as a patron saint of artists, physicians, bachelors, surgeons, students and butchers In traditional depictions, such as paintings, evangelist portraits and church mosaics, Saint Luke is often accompanied by an ox or bull, usually having wings.

St. Isaac Jogues (1607 –1646) was a Jesuit priest, missionary and martyr who traveled and worked among the Iroquois, Huron, and other Native

populations in North America. He was the first European to name Lake George, calling it Lake of the Blessed Sacrament. In 1646, Jogues was martyred by the Mohawk at their village of Ossernenon, south of the Mohawk River. Jogues, Jean de Brébeuf and six other martyred missionaries, all Jesuit priests or laymen associated with them, were canonized by the Roman Catholic Church in 1930; they are known as "The North American Martyrs."

Pope Saint John Paul II (born Karol Wojtyla; 1920- 2005) was head of the Catholic Church from 1978 to 2005. He was one of the most travelled world leaders

in history, visiting 129 countries during his pontificate. As part of his special emphasis on the universal call to holiness, he beatified 1,340 people and canonised 483 saints, more than the combined tally of his predecessors during the preceding five centuries. He was the second longest-serving pope in modern history after Pope Pius IX, who served for nearly 32 years from 1846 to 1878. Born in Poland, John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope since the Dutch Pope Adrian VI, who served from 1522 to 1523. John Paul II's cause for canonisation commenced in 2005 one month after his death with the traditional five-year waiting period waived. He was beatified on 1 May 2011 (Divine Mercy Sunday) after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints attributed one miracle to his intercession, and was canonised on 27 April 2014 (again Divine Mercy Sunday).

TTHE SAN DAMIANO CROSS

Two smaller figures are located in the lower corners of the cross bar. On the lower left is Longinus, the Roman soldier who pierced the side

of Jesus with a lance. On the lower right is Stephaton, the soldier who offered Jesus the sponge soaked in vinegar wine.

Six angels, one on each end and two on each side under Jesus’ hands, are represented on the crossbar, and they

are gesturing to indicate the importance of Christ’s crucifixion.

At the foot of the cross there are six figures, and although the original crucifix is damaged, they are presumed to be the patrons of Umbria: Saint Damian, Saint Michael, Saint Rufino, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Peter, and Saint Paul.

In the upper part of the cross, Jesus is clothed in regal garments, carrying his cross as a scepter, with his hand raised in greeting. Jesus is depicted in Ascension, and the gold and red symbolize royalty. Ten angels surround Jesus, five of whom have their hands extended as a welcoming gesture to Jesus.

At the top of the cross is the Hand of God with two fingers extended understood to be the blessing of God the Father on the sacrifice of his Son, and symbolizing the Holy Trinity. Today, the original San Damiano Cross hangs above the altar of the Chapel of the Crucifix in the Basilica of Saint Clare in Assisi. The Crucifix in the church of San Damiano is a copy. Franciscans regard this cross as a symbol of their mission to commit their lives and resources to renewing and rebuilding the Church.

The San Damiano Cross is a Romanesque crucifix dating from the beginning of the twelfth century. Although the Umbrian painter is unknown, this style of icon cross was used to teach the religious meaning of an event, in this case, the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. According to Franciscan tradition, St. Francis of Assisi was praying before this cross, which was located in the chapel of San Damiano near Assisi, when he received the message from God to rebuild His church. St. Francis not only rebuilt old church buildings, but also used this directive from God to lead Christians back to God and the Church, which gave rise to his founding of the Order of Franciscans charged with this mission. The cross contains the prominent, central figure of Christ who has conquered death. Above his head is the inscription in Latin, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” The other large figures are the witnesses to the crucifixion. On the left side is the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist. On the right side are Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and the centurion who in Matthew’s Gospel asks Christ to heal his servant. (Matthew 8:5-13) Peering over the left shoulder of the centurion is a small face and three other faces, symbolizing Jesus healing the centurion’s son, because according to the Gospel of John, “he and his whole household believed”. (John 4: 45-54) A small rooster beside Christ’s left calf possibly symbolizes Peter ‘s denial of knowing Jesus three times, or the dawn of a new church following the teachings of Jesus Christ.

It’s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there’s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could lose your job or change employers. Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is not necessary. But only having “through work” insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family’s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs analysis that evaluates your specific situation, will likely show that any employer-provided coverage falls short. In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. At the very least, it will definitely be more expensive. While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. I’ll be happy to meet with you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you’ll know exactly where you stand. Donato Mazzaro FIC Field Agent K of C 973 248 6025 [email protected]

Annual Ringwood Hunger Walk

DISASTERS AT HOME

It seems that all we see on TV lately are disasters: Texas, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, Mexico, Las Vegas… How blessed we are to have been spared

these occurrences. And it is good to reach out to support recovery in those areas.

LET US NOT FORGET

However, that there are “unseen disasters” happening daily all around us and among us in our Ringwood area. Catastrophic medical emergencies, reservists called up, neighbors close to homelessness, children and seniors going hungry, individuals who want to work but can’t afford to purchase gas or that new tire to

make a car operable.

Your support of the Ringwood Hunger Walk can help alleviate some of these problems. Walk and you will help the Center for Food Action (our local food bank and advocacy center) serve vetted clients from

Ringwood and surrounding town. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE in someone’s life and at the same time make a difference in yours.
