WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: Are Catholics allowed to visit psychics? Why or why not?

Answer: It’s part of human nature to experience some sense of unease and fear about the future. This can lead some people to seek out the services of psychics or consult horoscopes or turn to other occult practices or resources (e.g. Ouija boards or tarot cards). The Catechism of the Catholic Church is very clear that Catholics should avoid such practices: “Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human be-ings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone” (no. 2116). Despite the uncertainties we might feel, we are called to have faith and trust in God, confi-dent of God’s desire for what is best for us. This means that we are called to surrender, to pray and to reflect on how we can best move into the future in hope, knowing that God is with us.

SHARING THE GOSPEL: Do you ever catch yourself being bossy? That is a mistake grown-ups make, too. It is no fun to work or play with bossy people. They don’t honor God when they order people around. In today’s Gos-

pel, Jesus told his friends to be kind, not bossy. God wants us to help and serve other people.

PRAYER: Dear God, when I want to get my own way, help me to stop. Show me ways I can help other people instead.

MISSION FOR THE WEEK: Invite a friend over to visit, and think of ways to serve her. Hang up her jacket, offer her something to eat, and ask her what she would like to do. Share your best toys with her, and let her have the first turn .

CATHOLIC TRIVIA—JUST FOR FUN: What is the name of the perfumed oil consecrated by a bishop at a special Mass on or near Holy Thursday?

Answer: Holy Chrism

MARY, VIRGIN MOST PRUDENT

By: Mia V and Melina V—(Mary Undoer of Knots Junior Praesidium)

Our most loving and gracious Mother Mary is the epitome of cardinal virtues that serve as guidance and model in leading a faithful life. Prudence is one of those virtues that our Divine Mother flawlessly exemplifies through careful thinking and consideration before judging and reacting to a situation. In being prudent, we can discern right from wrong and which way is taking us towards God.

Mary’s unwavering faith and fervent love for God are the source of her strength and prudence that allowed her to listen and trust on God’s divine plan even if it meant risking everything when God has called upon her. At the Annunciation, Mary was at first taken aback by Angel Gabriel’s news that she was chosen to carry God’s Only Begotten Son to redeem His people. With prudence and grace, she collected her thoughts and asked Gabriel questions to clarify what she was hearing. Mary thoughtfully listened and realized her role in the fulfillment of God’s Divine plan of salvation. Surely, Mary was aware of evil lurking around especially during our weakest and most vulnerable state, but she listened, believed, and submitted to God’s plan. She trusted and put all her faith on Him despite of what others might think of her holy pregnancy and how it can affect her life.

Our Mother completely surrendered to God once she realized it was Him calling upon her in executing His plan. Mary is showing us that by pru-dence, she was able to listen and fulfill her divine role instead of turning away. It is unimaginable on what the consequences might have been for us if prudence did not prevail, and our Devoted Mother Mary did not make the right choice during the Annunciation. Our Gracious Mother is imploring us to exercise prudence even on the smallest acts. Impulsive decisions and im-prudent actions will consequently cause us to sin and offend our brothers and sisters. Oftentimes, it may be as simple as thinking before speaking or acting so that we can avoid hurting ourselves or others. On other times, it may need us to analyze the situation for consequences so that we can make the right choices. We see a world acting on reckless thoughts, anger, and hurt. Some people hide behind the domain of technology to demean and hurt others with their words. Some people have no regard to other people’s lives, properties, and well-being. Some are carried away by the idiocies of this world. As embodied by Mary, practicing prudence can help us avoid sins and immoral offenses. We must look deep into our hearts where our devo-tion in God lies and act with love and live in faith. We must set a Christian example to our brothers and sisters so that we can restore our world and prepare us for His judgment day.

Our loving Mother Mary is lighting the path for us leading to God. She is showing us the right way of living through her strong faith and virtues so that we can walk on the path towards God’s salvation. Mother Mary urges us to live in purpose and make choices that reflect our faith and love for the Almighty Father. Every day we are confronted with dilemmas that test our faith and resilience. It is part of being human that we have weaknesses and faults. Mary knows it is not easy to live righteously and follow the path of our Lord. Fortunately, we have our Mother Mary who is compassionate and loves those who follow our Lord God and seek her for assistance especially when we are weak and weary. Our Mother teaches us to exercise prudence during challenging times and she would like us to call upon her for direction and clarity. There are many temptations and evil forces that will try to sway us towards sin. Mary wants us to truly listen and think about the situation before making any choices. With faith and prudence, we will be able to distinguish God’s calls from immoral schemes trying to drown out His voice. With prayers, Mary’s God-given graces will give us the strength to accept and fulfill God’s calling and be worthy of His kingdom.

“Mary, Virgin Most Prudent, pray for us.”

XXIX Domingo Ordinario

PRIMERA LECTURA - IS 53, 10-11

Twenty Ninth Sunday In Ordinary Time

FIRST READING - IS 53:10-11

The LORD was pleased to crush him in infirmity. If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall see his descendants in a long life, and the will of the LORD shall be accomplished through him. Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 33:4-5, 18-19, 20, 22

Upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full. R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.

See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness, to deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine. R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.

Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield. May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us who have put our hope in you. R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.

SECOND READING - HEB 4:14-16

Brothers and sisters: Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heav-ens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to re-

ceive mercy and to find grave for timely help.

GOSPEL - MK 10:35-45

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." He replied, "What do you wish me to do for you?" They an-swered him, "Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left." Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be bap-tized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" They said to him, "We can." Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared." When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. Jesus summoned them and said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Page 8 Saint Clare Parish October 17th, 2021

It’s the positions of power and great authority that people often admire. We equate success with six figure incomes, high posi-tions, management, and influence. We even go above and beyond to find favor with our bosses so that we can get a little extra recognition and maybe the next promotion when it comes up. This is the way of the world. Those who have their values set on earthly things are going to work by earthly rules. We forget that it doesn’t work that way in the Kingdom of God. Success is meas-ured not from the place of status, influence, or prestige but from the place of humility, service, and sacrifice. The authority that one hopes to achieve is not an authority over others but an au-thority that comes from wisdom and developing one’s relation-ship with God. Jesus flips the tables on our pri-orities. Even the first disciples had a tough time un-derstanding this. T h e y r e a l l y thought that they would somehow receive a privilege or bonus from being faithful. We often operate un-der that same illusion.

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

I think we’ve all been guilty of looking at a situation and wondering what’s in it for us. It doesn’t matter if it’s a par-ticular work assignment, someone at the parish asking for help with the mission trip bake sale, or your spouse asking if you’ll take over the grocery shopping this week. Often, our first reaction to one of these requests is a heavy sigh and the thought: “If I do this, what will I get?”

Sometimes it surprises us to realize that the Apostles were no different. We tend to idolize these contemporaries of Christ as giants who walked with the Savior. But in reality, these individuals were merely human beings struggling to commit to the task of everyday stewardship.

In the Gospels, we see glimpses of them longing for praise and affirmation. We see them jockeying for positions of power within the group of twelve. We see them expect earthly rewards like honor and admiration. We see them acting a lot like us.

But in the end, we see them transformed by the grace of God. Like all the saints, their holiness stems from their com-mitment to their call. They stumble through, and as they stumble, they keep trusting God. They keep turning to Him. They keep asking for help. They don’t give up just because they keep failing at it.

We are defined by what we give when we have no hope of being reimbursed, rewarded, or recognized. The Apostles understood this, eventually, and they gave accordingly. Most of them gave their very lives.

Remember, they’re just like us. If they can do it, we can too.

STATEMENT ON RELIGIOUS EXEMPTION FOR VACCINATION AGAINST COVID-19

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles recommends that all members of the Catholic community who can receive a COVID-19 vaccine should do so. The Archdiocese is not providing individuals with religious exemption letters to avoid vaccination against COVID-19. Please see the information and links below to understand why the Archdiocese does not consider the COVID-19 vaccine to be morally objectionable and why it encourages all the faithful to get vaccinated. “Receiving one of the COVID-19 vaccines ought to be understood as an act of charity toward the other members of our community. In this way, being vaccinated safely against COVID-19 should be considered an act of love of our neighbor and part of our moral responsibility for the common good.” - USCCB, Moral Considerations Regarding the New COVID-19 Vaccines. The following links might be helpful in understanding the morality of receiving the vaccine: www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20201221_nota-vaccini-anticovid_en.html
