“Now Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples; a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for your people Israel.” Very often, having more light is not something we desire as it forces us to confront something we really do not want to see. There can be comfort found in darkness. It has an eerie sense of security to it. We do not have to challenge ourselves, or be challenged and can simply exist in some fabricated state of self-fabricated blissfulness. Jesus came to bring light and it is a light that is resisted by many and hated by some. It is a light that causes us to see things as they really are and not as we would want or need them to be. It is no wonder that Simeon boldly and honestly proclaims to Mary, “Behold, this child is destined for

the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thought of many hearts may be revealed.” We have to take the Gospel message as it is and not just use those parts that are useful to us or more palatable. Taking Jesus at face value can and will lead to turmoil and dissention. Hearts will be pierced. Jesus’

proclamation of what the world God created really ought to look like, has real and absolute social implications. It has a lot to say about how we treat our brothers and sisters: spiritually, personally, economically and globally. It has everything to do with the poor, the immigrant, the scared, the unborn, the vulnerable, the sick and the broken. The light opens up to a challenging, table-turning experience that may not be something we want to see, but shows us where we need to be.

St. Blaise was both a doctor and a bishop and is the patron saint of people with diseases of the throat. Blaise saved a boy’s life who was choking on a fish bone by saying a prayer and blessing him with candles crossed upon his throat. Because of him, we are reminded of the importance of taking care of our health and to thank God for doctors and medicines that help us to recover from illnesses. We celebrate his feast day on February 3.

Throats will be blessed in our grouping on:

In 1997, Saint John Paul II instituted World Day for Consecrated Life—a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is held on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2. This feast is also known as Candlemas Day, the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all people. On the World Day for Consecrated Life, we recognize and give thanks for those who have consecrated their lives to God and the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. The consecrated life is one way that women and men live out their baptismal commitment as followers of Jesus. During this year’s celebration of the World Day for Consecrated Life, please take a moment to remember in prayer all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life and be sure to thank them on their special occasion.

St. Clare of Assisi, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Holy Spirit & St. Thomas à Becket Churches We’re excited to share the list of approved names we received from Bishop Zubik! Please read the rationale for each of these names and prayerfully consider which name you think is most relevant for our new parish. The next step in the process is to select your name choice. You can submit it via paper, or on our website. The deadline for submissions is February 23. SEE PAGE 7 FOR A SUBMISSION FORM.

Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos served as a pastor at St. Philomena Parish in

Pittsburgh. Additionally, he celebrated Mass at the location of the former Saint Peter Church in the Monongahela Valley. In light of his connection to this city, it appears fitting that there be a parish with his name in the diocese. Furthermore, his missionary zeal provides a model for the effective evangelization we hope to carry out through the Church Alive process.

The Sacred Heart is a symbol of God’s boundless love for humanity. The flames emitting from the heart

symbolize the transformative power of God’s love. This transformative love is what we will need as we move forward as a unified parish. We hope to be transformed into a single community of faith aflame with the fire of divine charity . God’s all-encompassing love should compel us to extend our hearts in love following the example of Christ.

Saint Charles Borromeo is the patron saint of bishops, cardinals, seminarians, and spiritual leaders.

During these difficult times for the Catholic church, and our grouping in particular, we should remind all Catholics that our clergy need help. By naming our grouping after Borromeo, we would both honor him and ask for his help in guiding and protecting our clergy, especially our seminarians.

Transfiguration is a change in form or appearance to a more beautiful, spiritual state. The physical terrain and

sites of four former parishes have been "refigured" into one holy mystery of Christ's Transfiguration. The purpose of the Transfiguration was to encourage and strengthen the Apostles who were discouraged by their Master's prediction of His own Passion and Death. The Apostles came to understand that His work of redemption encompassed the cross and glory - we shall be glorified with Him only if we first suffer with Him.

Saint Monica is the patron saint of conversion and during her life, she displayed the power of intercessory prayer

for lost souls. It was through her intercession that her son Augustine came back into the fold. Many people in this area have children or grandchildren who no longer practice the Faith and there are countless others who have had no exposure to the Faith. We ought to imitate the example of Saint Monica in constantly praying for the souls of those who are far away from the Church.

*Triumph of the Holy Cross and Exaltation of the Holy Cross share the same rationale, and are both options for our new parish name.

As shown in the picture, the four churches in our grouping can be connected in the form of a Cross. The cross reminds Christians that there is no trial we can face which God does not also face with us. Christ bears all of our crosses with us and never abandons His people in their need. In our evangelization, we ought to “proclaim Christ crucified.” As a new parish, we are called to witness the love of God which finds its highest expression in Christ crucified. Also intriguing to note: the angle of the cross appears to be the angle that Jesus carried His cross. You can almost envision Him bearing the cross on the road to Calvary.

The “Whys Behind the Whats” of the Mass Continuing a breakdown of the parts of the Mass

and the meaning behind what we do

The Collect Following the Gloria, the priest prays “the Collect”. The priest “collects” or gathers the intentions of the people and the prayers offered. The collect has a specific focus for the day based on the liturgical season, solemnity or feast day of a saint. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) explains that, “By an ancient tradition of the Church, the Collect prayer is usually addressed to God the Father, through Christ, in the Holy Spirit …”. This prayer concludes the Introductory Rites of the Mass. Liturgy of the Word Most of the Liturgy of the Word is made up of readings from Scripture. On Sundays and solemnities, there are three Scripture readings. During most of the year, the first reading is from the Old Testament and the second reading is from one of the New Testament letters (except during Easter Time when the first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles). The last reading is always taken from one of the four Gospels. The Scriptures are the word of God, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. In the Scriptures, God speaks to us, leading us along the path to salvation. The Responsorial Psalm follows. The psalm helps us to meditate on the word of God. The second reading is from the New Testament and is drawn from one of the apostolic letters instructing us on how to live as Christians. The high point of the Liturgy of the Word is the reading of the Gospel which is the principal source of the life and teaching of Christ, our savior. We stand to hear the Gospel in reverence as we echo the words of eternal praise from the heavenly host of angels: Alleluia! Alleluia! (Hebrew for Praise God!) We trace the Sign of the Cross on the foreheads, lips and hearts, asking for the words of the Gospel to be always on our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. When the priest or deacon proclaims, “The Gospel of the Lord” we reply, “Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.” This captures the desires of our hearts, giving praise to the Lord (see Leviticus 19:24).

Mardi Gras —Did you know? Are you a donut kind of person? The tradition of Polish/Slavic donuts called Paczki eaten during Mardi Gras in preparation for Lent is gaining in popularity. These pastries are popular in the United States as a result of Polish/Slavic immigrants and good marketing by the bakery industry. Previously sold in bakeries mainly on Fat Tuesday, they have begun to make their appearance shortly after Epiphany. These donuts contain a fruit/ jelly filling or custard and the dough is rolled in sugar. Yes, it sounds like a basic donut except the paczki are very rich and are made with a dough of eggs, sweet yeast, butter and milk, very much like the French brioche. The tradition of eating these donuts as part of preparing for Lent finds its origin in households wanting to use up all the flour, butter, sugar and other baking items before Lent so that a true fast could be kept. As Easter approached, new flour and sugar were milled and would become a part of the celebratory Easter meal. As we move into February, perhaps consider using up your baking items in preparation for the fast of Lent. Lenten fasting often gets confused as “giving up” something, like candy or desserts for Lent. Lent actually calls for more than that from us. From her earliest days, the Church has taught about self-denial, or fasting in order to cultivate self-control, a fruit of the Holy Spirit. As St. Paul tells us, “the impulses of nature and impulses of the spirit are at war with one another”. Paraphrasing St. Paul in Romans 7:13 … Have you ever resolved not to do something and yet, the behavior finds a new way to express itself in your actions? In fact, I don't understand why I act the way I do. I don't do what I know is right. I do the things I hate. The intent of fasting is to give us freedom from those things that “bind us up” or hold us captive. Sometimes this is defined as mortification. We can gain freedom from self-centeredness, impatience, irritability, judgement etc., by putting them to death through the self-control that is strengthened by fasting. In other words, we find freedom from the things and personal behaviors that trip us up, by mortifying them; that is putting them to death, through the practice of grace-empowered fasting. Fasting helps us tame the wild stallion of our personality and behaviors and bring it under the bridle of self-control. So if you want to work on patience, fast. Fast from snacks between meals as part of your regular Lenten practice is not the equivalent of

“what you are giving up”. “What you are giving up” is in addition to the fasting of Lent which includes no snacks between meals, no desserts on the days of Lent and abstaining from meat on Fridays. As we prepare for Lent (Ash Wednesday is February 26), take some time to enjoy the days of Mardi Gras. Clean

out your pantry and plan for your best Lent, your date with yourself and God. Plan for your fast and exercise your fasting muscle. Jesus says, “Do not look dismal like the hypocrites, but look clean and refreshed.” Matt. 6:16-18 Jesus teaches that only prayer and fasting had special power to cure a

man possessed by a demon. Jesus teaches about the efficacy of fasting and how fasting, coupled with prayer, is acceptable and pleasing to God. Matt. 17-21; Mark 9:29

Prayer Requests

Our Second Collection on the first Sunday of every month at St. Clare of Assisi Parish has always been reserved for parishioners to place their Parish Share envelopes in the collection basket. Since we have already reached our 2019 PSP goal, we begin our journey for 2020 THIS Sunday. We pray that you will be as generous as you have always been to help us reach our new goal, which will be announced as soon as it is received from the diocese.

Please feel free to use the Easter Flower Envelope that is in this month’s packet to make a donation that will be used to purchase the flowers in Church this Easter Season. All memorial names (living & deceased) and donor names will be listed in the Special Intention Book that is carried up to the altar at every Mass at St. Clare of Assisi Parish. The deadline for submitting flower donations in Sunday, March 29.

We are very proud of all those who volunteer as ministers at Mass or Funerals as Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors or Altar Servers. We are always hoping that additional people may be interested in joining our current group of ministers, which is dwindling due to age or health-related issues. Please give it some thought and prayer. If one of these ministries interests you, call the Parish Office … before the Parish Office calls you!

Call the Parish Office at 412-233-7870 to receive your Contribution Report for 2019.

With the holidays over and all the Christmas decorations put away, not only our homes, but our church also looks bare. If you would like to mark a special occasion or remember a dearly departed and would like to have flowers placed at the Tabernacle, the Altar or at the Statue of St. Clare of Assisi for any Sunday or weekday Mass, please contact the Parish Office to reserve a date.

We are scheduling sponsors to have candles lit at the Tabernacle and/or at the Statue of St. Clare (2 candles) for February to June, 2020. Call the Parish Office to reserve your special Sunday. Candles remain lit for one week.

ST. ELIZABETH SCHOOL

The Third Grade class, along with Kindergarten through Fourth Grade, went on a December field trip to Old Economy Village. Old Economy Village, a National Historic Landmark, tells the story of the Harmony Society, one of the oldest and most successful religious communal groups of the nineteenth century. The Village preserves and presents the life, thought and culture of the Harmony Society.

It was a great day and the children got to experience how life would have been at that period in history. They saw the community kitchen where the people made huge pots of soup and stew for all to share. They were able to experience walking through an individual home and hear a story read from that time. Our leader explained how sheep were sheared and wool

was made and how the women measured a person with a piece of string to get measurements to sew clothing for the family. She would then make her pattern out of plain brown paper and sew the item. The highlight of our trip was time spent with Belsnickel, the Pennsylvania Dutch Santa Claus. He read from his great book whether the children were “naughty or nice” and what they could look forward to for Christmas. In order to give back, the children made an ornament at school and took it to Old Economy to help decorate the trees after listening to Belsnickel.

Prayers and sympathy for the family and friends of Mary C. Emmer, Elizabeth Thieret, Richard Joyce and Dolores Taucher. May they rest in peace with God in heaven.
