From the Pastor

Pentecost Sunday

The mystery of Pentecost is the fulfillment of God’s dream. We first need to remember that he created us for a life of union with him. He did not need to do this. Nothing obliged him to do this. It was something he did in his goodness, simply to share that goodness with us. It was an act of superabundant generosity. His supreme gift to us was freedom. He did not pre-program us to give him the answer he wanted to hear. He gave us the ability to answer as we wanted, even if that want was contrary to his purposes. Of course, in Adam and Eve we failed: we turned away from him and we were banished from Eden. Even though we were in a state of loss, God did not abandon us. He established covenants through Abraham, Moses, and David. He freed a band of slaves from Egypt and made them his own people. He established them in the land of promise and made them a nation. Yet even here, his people turned away from him. He sent the prophets to call them back to himself, and it was through the prophets that he taught his people that the source of all sin was in the heart, a lesson that Jesus himself repeated and amplified. Especially through the prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel, God foretold a time of messianic deliverance: an age in which he would pour out his Spirit of power and in which all humanity would come to know him, the least and the great. The law would not be written on tablets of stone, but on the human heart itself. This promise was fulfilled at Pentecost. The first reading from the Mass of the Vigil of Pentecost recalls the story of the Tower of Babel. Human beings in the region of what we now call southern Iraq chose to build a tower with its top in the sky. This may reflect the presence of what are called ziggurats in Mesopotamia, artificial mountains in that flat landscape, where humans could encounter the divine. God, in the book of Genesis, does not approve of this pride and confuses the language of humanity so that differing groups could no longer understand each other. The construction project came to a quick end. The lesson is that the sin of pride leads necessarily to division. In the first reading for the Sunday Pentecost readings, the Spirit comes upon the followers of Jesus gathered in one place. Suddenly there is a sound like a driving wind, and tongues of fire came to rest on each of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues. The sound of the wind drew the attention of the many pilgrims who were in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish feast of Pentecost, and when the Apostles came forth preaching in the variety of tongues, each language group understood them. The division of Babel was ended. The human race was united again in the profession of one faith: this time not in the pride of the tower builders, but in the humility of Christ, the Servant whose suffering saves the world.
