THE SISTERS ARE COMING, THE SISTERS ARE COMING!!

St. Paul Parish will be hosting two Peruvian Sisters from St. Clare School in Paita, Peru. Can you provide a comfortable bed and transportation for a few days of their stay? They will be here from September 10 - 22, 2018. You don’t need to host them the entire time. It would be nice if you spoke Spanish. However, it’s not

necessary because they speak English.

The Sisters are Sister Monica, director of St. Clare School and Sister Paula, a new graduate in the field of pharmacy. They are both Franciscan sisters from the

order of School Sisters of St. Francis.

They will be very busy connecting with our parish and other organizations. We don’t want them to experience all work and no play. Do you have any sugges-tions or would like to host a fun activity? (e.g. boat ride at the lake, picnic lunch,

site seeing, etc.)

Please contact Deb Passino at (262) 506-4782 or Lisa Bixby at (262) 689-0835.

Keeping the Faith Nobody from Nowhere

P - Pray

R - Read Scripture

E - Eucharist - receive the Eucharist weekly

P - Participate in Parish Life

A - Ask for Forgiveness

R - Reach out to the Least

e - Evangelize

I am a nobody from nowhere. I am rather sure of this. I have no

great story to claim as my own, I am not a hero, I have no real out-

standing talent (unless you can count being allergic as a talent -

then I am gifted!), and my life is really quite mundane. So, when I go

tell people ways to help their children be faithful, I tend to wonder

why anyone would listen to what I have to say? I don't have kids to

say, "this is what I did that worked." And I here I am, the director of

child and family ministry. So, alas, I will do my best.

And there is not one silver bullet to get the job done. People can do

everything right and kids can still leave the Church and faith behind.

And people who do absolutely nothing to help form their children -

and in some cases even work against a life of faith - can end up

with adult children who become saints. Like I said - no silver bullet.

But it is not, as one writer said, "a crap shoot".

So, if you are willing to listen to a nobody from nowhere, here are

three things that people have found true in kids who don't leave the

faith.

1. They are converted. Catholics don't usually like the word con-

verted. It sounds weird to us. Thanks be to God our Evangelical

brothers and sisters have continually reminded us of the im-

portance of this in recent decades. Converted means they

know Jesus. Notice it's not knowing about Jesus... it's being an

intimate friend of He who first loved us. The Good News - the

news that Jesus fought and died for our souls - not just humanity

in general - but OUR souls - YOURS and MINE - is written into their

heart and identity. This is where they "live and move and find

their being" (Acts 17:28).

2. They are equipped not just entertained. They know the habits of

what being a follower, a person converted, are and live them

out. They have been taught to pray, read Scripture, receive

Eucharist weekly (at least), participate in their faith community

(i.e. parish), ask for forgiveness and go to the Sacrament of

Reconciliation, they serve those who are in need in some way

(either formally or informally), and they share Jesus (think of it as

introducing their best friend Jesus, with their other friends). Fun is

good - I firmly believe it's a love language for kids. But we can't

just stop there. We need to give them the tools to be faithful.

3. Their parents give them the Gospel - regularly. I like to think

about this as the parents who are really invested in helping their

children become good at a sport. Parents may have others

who coach their son or daughter, but often it is the parent who

is the child's individual coach, acting as an expert on his or her

son or daughter's greatest strengths and weaknesses. And... not

to mention parents are their children's greatest cheerleader

and supporter! We willingly do this in the arena of kids sports,

dance, drama, etc. These are all are great. I think all of these

activities teaches something important - so don't think I am anti-

extracurricular activities. But they aren't God.

These emails... especially ones like this... can be really hard to write. I

don't write them because they are comfortable (because they

aren't). I write them because I truly love your children (i.e. desire

what is best for them) and want good things for them, and you. The

greatest and best thing I know is Jesus.

So... need some ideas on how to begin? Contact me. Somethings

are done better on an individual basis
