Happy New Year and greetings to you on this first weekend of Advent!

New Year?? That’s right – we are celebrating a new liturgical year! It is appropriate and logical that the New Year begins with the season of expectation, waiting and new beginnings. Advent has been celebrated by Christians since the 6th century. The color of Advent is purple – suggesting a repentant or penitential quality to the season. More recent theology suggests a meditative and prayerful aspect. What can you do to make this time of year more meaningful?

--Take time out of your day to read Scripture or a devotion book: Sit quietly, read a passage and let the words wash over you. Does one particular word or phrase stand out? Read the passage again. What might God be saying to you through that one word/phrase? Think about that during the course of your day. --Light the candles of an Advent wreath. It’s a simple and beautiful tradition to mark the four weeks of Advent with the lighting of candles. --Come to the Taize Service on Tuesday, Dec 12 at 7:00 pm. It is a beautiful service of tranquil music, light and the Word of God. --Take the opportunity to go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this season. Look at the ways you may have missed the mark in your relationships with God and those with whom you come in contact. --Be generous with your time, talent and treasure. Who might need assistance? Can you give a friend/relative a call or a visit? What about taking a name card off of the giving tree and donating a gift to someone in need? --Give some thought to how you will give birth to Jesus this Christmas. As Christians, we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus on earth. We are called to bring the Good News to everyone we encounter. How do we live out our faith in our families, in our workplace and in our neighborhoods? I wish you a meaningful and peaceful Advent Season and a blessed New Liturgical Year!! Paula Kowalkowski

Adwent jest obchodzony przez chrześcijan od VI wieku. Barwa adwentu jest fioletowa - co sugeruje skruszoną lub pokutną jakość sezonu. Teraźniejsza teologia sugeruje aspekt medytacyjny i modlitewny. Co możemy zrobić aby ta pora roku stała się bardziej znaczącą dla nas?

- Poświęć trochę czasu każdego dnia na przeczytanie fragmentu Pisma Świętego: usiądź w ciszy, przeczytaj fragment i pozwól by słowa dotarły do ciebie. Czy jedno konkretne słowo lub zwrot wyróżniają się? Przeczytaj ponownie fragment. Co Bóg mówi do Ciebie przez to jedno słowo / zwrot? Pomyśl o tym w ciągu dnia. - Zapal świece na wieńcu adwentowym. To prosta i piękna tradycja aby oznaczyć cztery tygodnie Adwentu. - Przyjdź na nabożeństwo Taize we wtorek, 12-go grudnia o godz. 7pm. Jest to piękne nabożeństwo spokojnej muzyki, światła i Słowa Bożego. - Skorzystaj z Sakramentu Pojednania w tym sezonie. Pomyśl w jaki sposób może została przeoczona szansa relacji z Bogiem i z bliźnimi. - Bądź hojny ze swoim czasem, talentem i skarbami. Kto potrzebuje Twojej pomocy? Czy przyjaciel lub krewny czeka na Twoje odwiedziny? A może zakupisz świąteczny prezent dziecku z ubogiej rodziny?

Pomyśl jak Ty uczcisz narodziny Jezusa w te święta. Jako chrześcijanie jesteśmy powołani abyśmy byli rękoma i stopami Jezusa tutaj na ziemi. Jesteśmy wezwani aby przekazywać Dobrą Nowinę każdemu kogo napotkamy. W jaki sposób okazujemy naszą wiarę w naszych rodzinach, w naszym miejscu pracy i w naszych społeczeństwach. The Christmas shopping race has begun and the most asked for gift is a gift card. Here at St. Thomas Becket, our MANNA gift card program has something for everyone on your list - even the most picky ones. It does not cost you anything – no shipping charges, no hidden fees, no coupons, no parking hassles, no long checkout lines, all is taken care of while you come to church for Mass!

How does it work? Look over the order form on the back page. Make your selection, and return the form with payment (check or cash) the following weekend. For example, if you would like 4 gift cards to Carson’s at $25 each, fill out the form and turn it in with a payment of $100. On the form you will see that MANNA pays us 8% for you order. Your gift cards for a total value of $100 will be waiting for you after Mass the following week. Gift cards are then used at Carson’s just like cash. Please feel free to contact us for any questions that you might have in regards this program.

Nie ma ukrytych opłat, kuponów, kosztów dowozu, szukania parkingu czy też długich kolejek przy kasie. Wszystko załatwiamy szybko i bezpiecznie gdy przychodzimy do kościoła na Mszę Św!

Jak to działa? Formularz na zamówienie kart gotówkowych jest załączony na następniej stronie. Retirement Fund for Religious Next weekend our guests will be Sr. Angela and Sr. Barbara from the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Des Plaines. They will be speaking on behalf of the Retired Religious. Second collection next weekend will be for that fund.

Sister Barbara Jean Wojnicki grew up in the Philadelphia area. She has ministered in Pennsylvania, Florida and the Philippines as a teacher, religious education leader, pastoral assistant and in formation. Currently, she lives and ministers in Des Plaines.

Sister Angela Szczawinska is a native of Poland. A long time teacher, she has worked as electronic media coordinator since her

transfer to the U.S. Province in 2010. She enjoys her online ministry that brings her religious community into the homes of families in a very

different way. Sister Angela is connected with St. Emily Parish where she is involved in the music ministry and helps out as a receptionist.

Question: With Christmas fast approaching, can you give me some practical tips to prepare myself and my

family that will help us stay grounded in what this holiday is

really about? With all the commercialism, it's easy to stray...

Answer:

Happy times and events bring fond memories and a renewed sense of love and kinship with others. The anticipation is half the joy of the

event itself. The coming of the Lord is that kind of event that people have

been looking forward to for generations with fervent hope and desire. It gave them strength and

courage as they waited for the coming of the Lord.

We know that Christmas is rushed.

Sales begin in August and carols blare long before the season begins.

Everyone laments the commercial aspects of the season, but as Advent begins, do something to help you be more mindful of the Lord's coming. Use an Advent wreath, or enthrone the Bible prominently, or read the

readings from the Bible assigned to each day. Postpone the tree and

decorations until closer to Christmas. Establish new family rituals, customs

and prayers that help remind everyone that we are preparing to

celebrate the birth of Jesus. Fasting, daily Mass, a special celebration of

reconciliation, reaching out to those alienated from family or society, and visiting the homebound manifest the love of the Christ Child and the Holy Family. Resist the temptation to rush the season. In his own time and in his own way, God will come. Our task is

simply to be watchful and ready.
