PASTOR’S MESSAGE —Fr. Matthew Cormier MENSAJE DEL PARROCO– Padre Matthew Cormier EL POLVO EN MI FRENTE

DIRT ON MY FOREHEAD WILL NOT GET ME INTO HEAVEN

This coming Wednesday, the Church marks the be-ginning of the penitential season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. On this day, the Christian faithful tra-ditionally receive ashes on their heads as a sign of penance. The words of the blessing of the ashes is a good explanation of their purpose. The blessings says, “O God, who desire not the death of sinners, but their conversion, mercifully hear our prayers and in your kindness be pleased to bless these ash-es, which we intend to receive upon our heads, that we, who acknowledge we are but ashes and shall return to dust, may, through a steadfast observance of Lent, gain pardon for sins and newness of life af-ter the likeness of your Risen Son.” The ashes are a reminder of our mortality and sin-fulness. They are a reminder of our need for conver-sion. Without the intention of changing our lives, it’s just dirt on our forehead that means nothing. For some reason, Ash Wednes-day has become the most popular day in the liturgi-cal calendar. More people come to church on this day then any other, even though Ash Wednesday is NOT (and has never been) a Holy Day of Obligation. Most parishes will see three to four times the num-ber of people on Ash Wednesday than on Sunday. What does this say about the spiritual priorities of most Catholics? That they will move heaven and earth to get some blessed dirt on their forehead, but will not make the effort to worship God on Sunday as He has commanded? Does some dirt have more value for most Catholics than the very Body and Blood of the Lord? Ash Wednesday has become a sad commentary on the state of Catholicism. It re-veals a faith in many that is superficial and often downright superstitious. The rubrics of the Roman Missal instructs that “the priest places ashes on the head of all those present who come to him, and says to each one: ‘Repent, and believe in the Gospel’ or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return’”. The rubric does not specify the forehead. In Europe, the ashes are sprinkled on the top of the head. I don’t know when and where the practice became on this side of the pond to place the ashes on display on the fore-head. However, it seems to me that the European method is more in keeping with the admonition of Our Lord in the Gospel for Ash Wednesday where he teaches that true penance is not done for show. However the ashes are received, they should be a sign of our desire to repent of sin and turn to the Lord.

The answers to “Why do I have to go to Mass?”

People today are surrounded by distractions: music fills their ear buds, while tweets and posts are con-stantly checked and updated. They have been condi-tioned to fill any void or silent moment with noise and stimulation. So instilling an appreciation and enthusiasm for the Mass can be a challenge.

Altaration: The Mystery of the Mass Revealed is a new five-part study on the Mass that features power-ful cinematography, inspiring presenters, and engag-ing workbook resources. Altaration uses humor, sto-ries, and small group discussion to capture your at-tention and instill in them a deep and lasting love for the Mass.

Join us for Altaration at St. Henry Catholic Church in the Community Center beginning March 11 at 9am or 6pm and continuing eve-ry Monday of Lent. Fee is $10 to cover the cost of the workbook. For more information or to register for the study, call Jessica at 337-436-7223 or email [email protected] or visit sthen-ry.church Cost $10
