Rev. Richard Dellos’ Message for the Lenten Season:

In the celebration of Good Friday we listen to the proclamation of the Gospel of the Lord’s passion according to Saint John (18:1-19:42): the obedience of Jesus to the Father, in virtue of the Spirit reaches its highpoint in the death on the cross (see Hebrews 5:8). The Holy Spirit, who sustained the life of Jesus in the womb of the Virgin, must now sustain the Redeemer at the moment of his death, so that he might live this supreme act of his existence as an acceptable sacrifice to God for us (see Hebrews 9:13-14). Thus it is the Holy Spirit who was the soul of the sacrifice of Christ; he is the origin of Christ’s love for God and humanity. From the pierced side of the crucified Jesus flowed “blood and water” (John 19:34): the blood witnesses to the reality of the Lamb’s sacrifice for the salvation of the world and the water is a symbol of the Spirit and his spiritual fecundity. Thus it is because of the action of the sanctifying Spirit that we can have a share in the fruits of the sacrifice of Christ. At the end of his account, the significant expression “Then he bowed his head, and delivered over his spirit” (John 19:30) is used by Saint John to describe the death of Jesus: the last breath of the dying Jesus becomes the breath of the Spirit who gives life to the new creation (see John 20:22). In his account of the passion, John is the only one to mention the presence of Mary “near the cross of Jesus” (John 19:25). Ancient iconography shows the Mother of the Lord dressed in blue, standing near the cross in a position of offering. Just like Abraham, Mary offers her Son but unlike Abraham her Son is not spared at the last moment: she must see him die. The Virgin Mother is the “woman of hope who, like Abraham, accepted God’s will ‘hoping against hope’ (see Romans 4:18).” During the day of Holy Saturday the Church prays at the tomb of the Lord. The Liturgy of the Hours contains a reference to Mary in the intercessions of Morning Prayer: “Christ, our Savior, your sorrowing Mother stood by you at your death and burial, in our sorrows may we share in your suffering.” Popular piety has developed various modes of contemplating this sorrow of the Mother of Jesus, without separating it from her joyful expectation of meeting her Risen Son. Easter night according to ancient tradition is a “vigil for the Lord” (Exodus 12:42). The Church gathers together all her children so that in the celebration of the Word and of the holy mysteries they might relive (or live for the first time) the Easter passing over of the Spirit which incorporates them into the dying and rising of Christ. The Easter Vigil is filled with references and allusions to the Holy Spirit in its biblical readings, signs and prayers, more especially when there are faithful who are receiving the sacraments of Christian initiation. Regarding the relationship between the sending of the Spirit, the liturgical celebration and the lives of those who have risen with Christ, the prayer after communion is significant: “Lord, you have nourished us with your Easter sacraments. Fill us with your Spirit, and make us one in peace and love.”
