October’s Virtue of the month is Gratitude ; Academic Excellence is Heritage Language The Virtue for the month of October is GRATITUDE. Whenever we gather as a faith community to worship, we offer thanks to our God. The blessings of food, friends, family and freedom are all gifts from God our Creator. As we prepare for the celebration of Thanksgiving, we are urged to take some time to remember our blessings and give thanks. In this cycle of the pastoral plan we focus on ‘Charity’. This month at St. Jude we will express our gratitude through our classroom activities devised by the classroom teachers. We will show our gratitude to students, staff and community by our words and actions. We will recognize our students through our Principals’ luncheon for their exemplary actions helping others in and around the school. October is the Month of Mary: The Rosary Apostolate volunteers will visit our school to teach the Rosary to our students. Visits will continue on the first Tuesday of each month until the month of May when we will be honouring Our Blessed Mother in a Marian celebration. Our first visit is October 7th, parents are welcome to join in saying the rosary with your child’s class. CSAC News: Our CSAC executive for this school year is as follows: Mrs. Macri - Chair Mrs. De Luca— Co Chair Mrs. B. Barillari - Treasurer Mrs. F. Prioli - Corresponding and Recording Secretary Look out for news and upcoming events. Our first one is the Halloween Dance-a-thon on October 31st.

New vaccines added to the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA)

We will continue to request updated immunization records from parents. Parents may contact Immunization Information Centre at 416-392-1250 for immunization reporting or questions. For newcomer families, Public Health offers free translation of foreign

immunization records and free immuniza-tion clinics for students with no health card.

Inside the school news : Terry Fox Run A very special thank you to Mr. Bellissimo and the Terry Fox Run Committee for all of their efforts in mobilizing

the school to raise funds for Terry Fox’s campaign and to generate the necessary funds that are used to find a cure for

cancer. This is a great cause as we have all been touched in one way, shape, or form by cancer. May the positive leg-

acy of this day help to guide us for the rest of the year. On Friday, Sept. 26, St. Jude celebrated our 10th Annual

Terry Fox School Run. The weather was ideal for this important event. All our students actively participated and the

day was a great success. The Terry Fox Committee would like to thank all the crossing guards, staff, students, their

families and friends for their help and support in helping to raise money for cancer research. St. Jude has been

blessed to have such great support from our community and staff. I would like to express sincere thanks to the Terry

Fox committee

Baseball Tournament: There's nothing better than a sunny day and a competitive game of baseball. The St. Jude girls got both on Friday,

September 26th facing off against local schools. Memories were made of great moments and wishes for second

chances. In the end the St. Jude girls represented their school well and deserve to be acknowledged for their fine fforts, finishing third overall. Our athletes were our captain Letymer Tavers, co-captain Brianna Sornoza, Kayla Es-

tevao, Kelesha Brown, Esther Mayers, Erin Acevedo, Cristina Martinez, Kamala Edwards, Ivangely Meyjin Reyer, Cris-tina Montego, Kandace Pedraza and Guedalupe Herrera.

A special thanks goes out to our photographer Catherine Nyguen for capturing those special memories and to our

drivers Mrs. Taveras and Mrs. Mayers who took time from their busy schedules to shuttle the girls to and from the game. Finally thank you to our coaches Mr. Bellissimo and Mrs. Pietras who prepared us well for our tournament.

School Dress Code Another gentle reminder to all of our parents, that St. Jude’s students wear a red top and black bottoms . Running

shoes are mandatory for daily physical activity. You could also purchase clearance items of our school dress code

from Harp Uniforms at (905) 487-8372. Students must be in complete dress code at all times.

Curriculum Night: The message of partnership was the key focus during the Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 24th. . If we

all work together, this will be that difference required to help channel your child’s energy to always strive to be the

best that they can be. This involves student diligence at school to achieve all of the requirements of the Success Cri-

teria established by the students and the teacher and to continue to develop STRONG study habits at home. During

the school year, TV watching should be reduced considerably and be replaced with more practice with reading and

math applications, something as simple as memorizing the multiplication tables. Thank you everyone for taking the

time to make it a success and for an enjoyable evening!

HALLOWE'EN Dance-a-thon THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2014

Hallowe'en is a fun and exciting time for children. However, it is also a time for caution and adherence to some basic safety rules.

The following are some safety rules for all children who plan to participate in Hallowe'en activities:

Children should be advised to:

1) Stay in their own neighbourhood. 2) Be careful crossing streets.

3) Use make-up rather than masks on their faces. 4) Use light colours in costume.

5) Carry a flashlight so that drivers may see them. 6) Avoid costumes/outfits that make it hard to walk.

7) Be sure little brothers/sisters are supervised at all times.

8) Most Important: Have Mom and Dad check all treats. Do not eat treats until you get home.

St Jude Church Gala YOU ARE INVITED: Friday, November 14, 2014 St Jude’s Parish is excited to be celebrating its 5th annual “Renewing our Hope in Saint Jude” Gala on Friday,, November 14, 2014

We would like to invite you to come and celebrate this special event with us! This yearly fundraiser would not be a success with-

out the help and support of our community. Thank you!

Open Houses in High Schools Grade 8 students and their families are invited to check out their high school options. TCDSB secondary schools host open houses

in October and November. http://www.tcdsb.org/school/OpenHouses/Pages/default.aspx

Extra-Curricular Having our students participate in extra-curricular programmes is our way of instilling a strong sense of school pride and school

spirit in our students. It is also a great way for students to get used to the reality that in their lives they will have to get used to jug-

gling more than one thing. This is why we encourage students to participate in the many recess, lunch and after school activities

offered at St. Jude’s.

We do remind students regularly, that in order to participate on school teams and clubs, they must stay dedicated to their academic

programs at school. If a conflict does occur with a student not being able to handle school and extra-curricular activity, this is

when a meeting between the parent, coach and school administration will become necessary. Help us to help your child, our stu-

dent, to maintain a good study habits so that school work does not suffer while your child is engaged in an extra-curricular activity

at the school.

Skating Skating will soon commence. Schedules will come home with your child. We need the support of parents and fami-

ly friends to come and assist with the tying of skate laces and with the skating on the ice.

Helmets are highly RECOMMENDED .

Sign-out privileges of skates is available in the gym. Please have your child/students come to the gym before the bell

rings: 8:20 to 8:30 am on the days your class is skating.

Allergen Aware School

St. Jude is an allergen free school. There are children in attendance who suffer from severe and life threatening aller-

gies to certain foods, such as peanut and nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe life threat-

ening reactions. We would appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community in NOT sending any lunches or

snacks that contain peanuts or nuts, which could potentially harm a child. Please avoid sending food for birthdays or

special occasions since they will not be permitted in the classrooms.
