END OF YEAR STATEMENTS

The 2018 Contribution Statements will be mailed January 31, 2019. If you have had a change of address during 2018 or have questions regarding your contributions, please contact Joan Godfrey at [email protected] or 940-220-7380; or Kathy Christoferson at 940-222-6678 or [email protected].

CONTRIBUTIONS 2018

Please consider supporting our Bread of Life Ministry by providing personal care items, infant items, cleaning products,

and non-perishable food items for Denton County’s Friends of the Family. ADDITIONALLY, our friends at The Shepherd’s Hand Pantry, an important distribution point for Bread of Life, providing approximately 1300 meals monthly, are in need of sealable food baggies, primarily quart and gallon size. Please consider picking up an extra box or two the next time you go shopping. Place your donations in the Bread of Life drop box in the Narthex. Thank you for your help and continued support of our friends in need. Together we can help “Feed the Hungry”!

The next St. Mark Women’s ACTS Retreat is January 24 – 27, 2019 at Briarwood Retreat Center. Kelly Desjardins is the Director. Sign ups for the retreat

after all Masses will begin the weekend of December 8-9. Cost for the retreat is $225, but scholarships are available. For more information contact Kelly at [email protected] or 940-594-5993.

Are you going through a difficult time? A Stephen Minister can help. Stephen Ministers are members of our congregation who listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support to people

going through a crisis or a difficult time. St. Mark contacts: Deacon Joe Standridge 940-220-7160, Donalee Hallenbeck 916-690-2714, Jennifer Rahn 940-262-0994.

Come join with our Marianist family for our monthly meeting on Thursday, February 7 at St. Mark RE Building Room 107. Meeting will start at 1:00 pm and conclude around 3:00

pm. The Marianist Affiliates’ mission is to recognize that Mary serves as an example on how to live. Through her faith, Mary conceived and brought Jesus to everyone who would believe. By living out our faith, we also bring Christ to the world anew. For more information, please contact Andy Gilliard at 940-323-8693.

Please pray for the repose of the souls of:

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD January 12-13, 2019

Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

Why do we baptize infants when the Bible says "repent and be baptized"? How can an infant repent?

When you take a trip, you do not wait until you run out of gas before you fill the tank-at least not on purpose! You fill your tank and pack your bags as you anticipate a trouble-free journey. We can make a similar case for the baptism of children as they begin their spiritual journey. In the early church, only adults were baptized when they professed faith in Jesus as the Messiah. As the church grew, children were baptized and raised in faith. Baptism was the first sacrament of initiation, followed by confirmation and holy Communion.

The Bible does not limit baptism to adults. Several passages point to infant baptism. Jesus said "Let the children come to me and do not hinder them," while Paul would baptize people "and their household." He did not limit baptism to adults. None of the early Church Fathers wrote that the practice was wrong or that a formal act of repentance was a necessary step. If anything, our whole life is an act of repentance, a continual struggle to turn from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. We believe that baptism is more than a symbolic act of faith. It forgives original sin as well as personal sin, and brings us into the church, where we begin our journey of faith. © 2011 Liturgical Publications Inc
