Third Sunday of Advent
Readings: : Isaiah 35:1-6, 10
James 5:7-10 Matthew: 11:2-11
Gospel
When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.”
As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you. Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”
1. What do you expect to happen this Advent, and how does this expectation affect your experiences of this season?
2. How did you come to know Christ? Did someone else like John the Baptist prepare His way and announce Christ to you? Do you think you could be a John the Baptist and perhaps prepare the way and announce Christ to someone else who is lost?
3. It’s now a new beginning, a time to plant and sow a new seed and new birth. How will you cultivate that seed over the next six months or year?
4. Do you fully recognize Christ in your life, and if so where and when?
5. How are you practicing patience during the holiday crush to get it all done?

Are you looking to deepen your faith experience during Advent? One way might be in reading
and reflecting on the Infancy Narratives of Jesus.
St. Mark’s Spiritual Book Group has chosen a book called —Advent of the Savior—
a commentary on the Infancy Narratives of Jesus—by Stephen J. Binz.
Our next meeting is Tuesday,
December 20th, from 2 to 3:30 PM.
We meet on the 2nd floor in the
conference room by the library.
Come and join us for a very faith-filled
experience including music and time for
contemplation followed by a discussion
of this book.

St. Mark
Welcomes You
Many of St. Mark parishioners are part-time/winter residents.
Are you one? If you’d like to become part of our parish
family, maybe it’s time to register.
Did you know that you can maintain your status in your current parish while becoming a member of St. Mark’s?
Also, registering at St. Mark assures that should a priest be needed, all the
necessary information is already on file. This is also true should funeral plans be required. And did you know that
only registered parishioners may use the social hall after a funeral?
Registration forms can be found in the Narthex, at the parish office, or on line at
our web site: www.stmarkrcc.com.
We look forward to welcoming you!

We are journeying through the darkness of Advent so we
can experience the deeper joy of Christmas.
Joy comes to us in many ways; it can rise out of aches and ashes. Those that come to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Mark the Evangelist are filled with fear and uncertainty and seeking help. Oftentimes, when the task seems impossible, we are able to offer individuals and families joy that is routed in faith and a peace that is combined with hope. This is truly the message of Christmas! When the task seems impossible, we do our best to help them escape the darkness of the world where they live. The collection next week will be for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. As you and your families celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmastime, remember that your gifts have helped to extinguish the darkness for so many of our neighbors in need all during the year. Rejoice! Take heart! The light of Christ will shine brightly on Christmas morning for you and your loved ones, but also for many families who have been helped by your generosity. Thank you and God bless you and those you love at Christmas!
The St. Vincent de Paul Truck will be at St. Mark’s in front of the Church Hall on
Tuesday, December 13th, from 8 AM to 11 AM.
Bring your household items, clothing, etc. (We do not accept bulky TV’s.)
For large appliances or furniture,
please call 888-986-4483 for pickup.
You may also call our office with any questions at 245-4700.
Thank you for your
generosity!
This Sunday evening, Dec. 11th, the Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting will unite family and friends around the globe in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren who left too soon. As candles are lit at 7 PM local time, hundreds of thousands of persons will commemorate and honor the memory of all the children gone too soon. This lighting service started in the United States in 1997 as a small internet observance. It has since swelled in numbers going around the world through 7 time zones over the 24-hour period. Join with others throughout the world in the remembrance of children who have died, but will never be forgotten.
Candle Lighting at St. Mark Sunday evening, Dec. 11th, at 7 PM ~ Doors open at 6:30 PM ~

Parishioners of St. Mark’s,
I wish I could thank each one of you personally and tell you how much the Alpha Center appreciates all you do to make it possible for us to assist in saving lives.
This year was more overwhelming than usual, even for this great parish. Your contributions total over $20,000 and will provide much help for us to work with women who chose life for their babies.
I know that someday you will meet in Heaven the babies whose lives you saved, and they will tell you how grateful they are for your love and support.
God bless you all and thank you once again for your generosity.

A True Servant of Faith – A Meaning of Advent
Dear St. Mark Parishioners,
In addition to serving here at St. Mark’s, I am also the Associate Director of the Permanent Diaconate Office - for Diaconate Formation. (The training of men to become deacons.)
The following is the wording of an email that I received from a very special faithful man who was studying and waiting to be ordained as a Deacon on June 10, 2017.
Email Letter (from Elias Coll):
“Blessings to you all and thanks a lot for all your love and prayers. I could never have imagined having people as especial as you guys walking this journey of faith with me!
Thanks’ to the holy men of my class and to their wives, thanks to the holy men of the other classes, thank you Deacons Joe and Joe, and a special thank you to Deacon John and Deacon David. The mercy of God is in all of you.
I would like to share an experience that I had last week when I was at Florida Hospital. Last Wednesday morning I was invited to a meeting with a group of young doctors. They are in the residency program of Internal Medicine. I was transported in a wheelchair to a conference room where I meet a doctor, who was the coordinator of the reunion, and another doctor who was an Internal Medicine Specialist, and about 25 young “resident” doctors. The chaplain of the Hospital was also there.
During the meeting they asked me about my feelings after receiving the last news of the progression of the disease and the short time of living that I have left (six months), according to the doctors. They asked me how I would like to be remembered and what I want to do in the time that I have left.
God gave me the opportunity to talk to a group of young doctors and explain to them how important is to see the patient as a human being and not only as a clinical case or a name in a list of day responsibilities. God gave me the chance to talked to them about Jesus and his mother, our Virgin Mary; about the Holy Trinity and how they have strengthen me during this almost four years after my diagnosis. God gave me the blessing of talking about him to a diverse group of ethnicities and religions; to tell them that I have been preparing for my encounter with him (God) and how beautiful is to have him, and to live very close with him and the Virgin Mary in my heart.
How do I want to be remembered? By my faith! What do I want to do? Just exactly the same things that I have being doing, preparing my soul, growing my spirit and giving to God my life, because God is my creator and I am not the one who lives, but it is Christ who lives in me.”
I had the pleasure of serving with Bishop John Noonan on Saturday, November 26, 2016, when now, Deacon Elias Coll received the Sacrament of Holy Orders by being ordained a Deacon. His true faith has been an inspiration not only to me, but to everyone he has encountered.
Blessings to all of you and many prayers for Deacon Elias, Deacon John
