Reflections on the Sunday Scripture

November 27, 2016

First Sunday of Advent

Readings: Isaiah 2:1-5 Romans 13:11-14 Matthew: 24:37-44

Gospel

Jesus said to his disciples: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

1. Do we just get so busy preparing for the holidays like those in the time of Noah that we forget about the coming of Christ? Or, do we also just go about our daily tasks like the men in the field and the women in the mill and forget the coming of Christ?

2. Of the two men and of the two women mentioned in the gospel – which one will we be? Do we have faith and do we live a holy life? - At all times?

3. What must we do to prepare for Christmas? Will our preparations be different from our usual routines in life? How will we prepare? How will we all come together as “One Body” in Christ?

A Charismatic Mass

will be celebrated at St. Mark

on Monday, November 28th,

at 6:30 PM in the Chapel.

Our Celebrant will be Father Rafal.

Teams available after Mass for personal prayer.

Thank you to all of you have generously picked

up a gift tag for our Giving Tree Program.

Please remember that all gifts must be brought back to the Church by next Sunday, December 4th.

Any questions? Please call us at 245-4700.

The use of the Advent Wreath

is a traditional practice which

has found its place in the

Church as well as in the home.

The blessing of an Advent Wreath

takes place on the First Sunday

of Advent or on the evening

before the First Sunday of Advent.

When the blessing of the Advent Wreath is celebrated

in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed

by a parent or another member of the family.

All make the sign of the cross as the leader says:

Our help is in the name of the Lord.

Response (R/.) Who made heaven and earth.

Then the Scripture, Isaiah 9: (lines 1-2 and 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (lines 16-17 & 19) or Isaiah 64 (lines 2-7) is read:

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

R/. Thanks be to God.

With hands joined, the leader says:

Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

R/. Amen.

The blessing may conclude with a verse from “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”:

O come, desire of nations, bind

in one the hearts of humankind;

bid ev’ry sad division cease

and be thyself our Prince of peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

shall come to thee, O Israel. — From Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers

Holy Land Gifts

Olive Wood Carvings

— for sale after Masses —

Weekend of December 3rd and 4th

Saida & George Rashmawi, who are volunteer members from the Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem in the Holy Land, will be visiting our parish next weekend. They will speak to us about the Christian struggle in the Holy Land. They will also have some beautiful Olive Wood carvings which are all handmade by the Christian people in Bethlehem, for sale after all the Masses that weekend. The purpose of this visit is to help maintain the existence of the Catholic people in the Holy Land. Catholic Christians were once the majority in that land but the percentage has now dropped to less than 1.5%. Please take time to look at the carvings, make a purchase and help this church

maintain a presence in the very land where our Lord was born, where he preached the Good News and where his Kingdom was first established. These carvings make great sacramental and Christmas gifts that have an added special significance given where and why they were made.
