Grace and Peace from Pastor Gary

Help is on the way! These words are always a welcome sound whenever we face a distressing situation – a medical emergency, car problems during a family vacation, a natural disaster, or struggles encountered on moving day. Knowing that help is on the way reduces our feelings of fear and anxiety.

Imagine the feelings of fear and anxiety experienced by Jesus’ disciples the night before His death on the Cross. He had assured them that He would be raised from the dead and would go to prepare a place for them “in my Father’s house.” Still, these promises did not give them peace or a confident hope. How on earth could they live without Jesus by their side?

Help is on the way, Jesus promised them and us. “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you.” [John 14:25-27]

Help is here – this is what we celebrate always in the Church, and especially on the festival day of Pentecost! God sends the Holy Spirit into our lives as children of God in the waters of Holy Baptism, and the Holy Spirit remains our life-long Helper, Counselor, Teacher, and Guide.

Help is here, and we stand upon Jesus’ promises for the life and ministry of the Church. We believe, in the words of Luther’s Small Catechism, that the Holy Spirit “calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth and keeps it united with Jesus Christ.”

Whenever we face challenges as a Church or struggles in our personal life, be at peace, because Help is here! “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” [Romans 15:13]

In Christ’s love, Pastor Gary

PS – I wish to share much happy news regarding our family. Our daughter Valerie and her husband Nathan have been blessed with the birth of their second child, Sebastian Irenaeus Valle, on April 26 in Rapid City, SD. We will have a family gathering there in June to welcome him into the family and to celebrate Mary’s 60

th birthday. Mary and I will be

traveling soon to Mt. Pleasant, SC to visit our daughter Katherine and her family and celebrate Lydia’s baptism. A few days later, I will travel to Texas and assist our son David as he moves into our home for the summer. He will attend graduate school at Boston University beginning in September for the Master in Fine Arts program for screen writing. Emily will come later in June, and we will have a visit with Katherine’s kids in August. Last of all, our niece Beth is moving from Chicago to Nashville this month and has already requested help from Mary as she delivers twins in October. Be prepared for new stories and lovely pictures of our loved ones!

RELATIONAL EVANGELISM & CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY

As Luther would say in the Small Catechism, “What does this mean?” “When does this happen?” I have found that church growth happens in Christ-centered, grace-filled, Spirit-led congregations as members understand and practice caring ways of inviting and welcoming people to worship. We often tell people about a favorite restaurant where “the service is good and the food is great.” So we can develop the ability to tell people about St. Mark’s with equal enthusiasm! We can also become more aware of making positive first impressions on worship visitors.

In order to “equip the saints for the work of ministry” [Ephesians 4:12], I will be offering several workshops on Relational Evangelism and Christian Hospitality during the summer. Each workshop covers the same material and will be offered from 10:00 – 10:30

a.m. on the following Sundays: June 5, 12, 26; July 3, 24, 31. You will be asked to register in advance so that I can prepare well for each workshop. Information will be provided during worship, beginning on Pentecost, May 15th.

Dear Pastor Gary and Members of St. Mark’s,

It is with great appreciation that I thank you for all your prayers, thoughts and many, many cards. I sin-cerely thank Pastor Gary for being with Harry during my surgery; his visits during my recovery; and the many prayers offered on my behalf. Also many thanks to Polly and Wayne Falkenberg and Gwen and Bob Dornbos who also stayed with Harry during my surgery until our children arrived from

out of town. Thank you to the Knit and Crochet group for the beautiful lap robe which is a comfort for my daily naps. I’m looking forward to a full recovery and to be back in your midst soon.

My deepest appreciation for all of your love and concern, Mary Wiley
