Closing Hymn: O Sacred Head Surrounded

O Sacred Head surrounded, By crown of piercing thorn!

O bleeding Head so wounded, Reviled and put to scorn!

Death’s pallid hue comes o’er Thee,The glow of life decays…

Yet, Angel hosts adore Thee, And tremble as they gaze.

I see Thy strength and vigor, All fading in the strife;

And Death with cruel rigor, Bereaving Thee of life!

O agony and dying!O love to sinners free…

Jesus, all grace supplying, O turn Thy Face on me!

Happy Birthday Richard!!

Lenten Fast & AbstinenceFAST—Everyone over 21 and under 59 years of age is bound to observe the laws of fast everyday of Lent, Sundays excepted. Only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken, but together should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids such as milk and juices are allowed.

ABSTINENCE—Everyone over 7 years of age is bound to observe the law of abstinence. No meat is allowed on Ash Wednes-day, Fridays, and Holy Saturday. Meat may be eaten only at the main meal on Ember Wednesday and Ember Saturday.

He ate nothing in those days, and when they were ended, He was hungry.—Luke 4:2

“It is comparatively easy to pray about the work we are trying to do for God, but it is not easy to remember the fasting. There must be, if we would be like our Master, the personal element of suffering or deprivation of some kind. Our Lord deliberately did penance for forty days for a special purpose—the salvation of His people; and we, if we would help Him in His work either in our own souls or those of others, we must deliberately do penance too. There must be the giving up of something that touches ourselves…

“We are contemplating Our Lord’s life for one reason only—that we may know Him better and copy Him more closely. Do not let us forget when we have work on hand that before He began His work, He fasted.”

—Taken from Spiritual Readings by Mother St. Paul

And Jesus, knowing their thoughts...said to them: So shall it be with this wicked generation.

“Let [us here] point out the signs [His denunciation] gives of the depth to which the Heart of Jesus had been hurt. All this time he had been preaching and proving His Kingdom, by noble words and good deeds; He was hurt to see it made one with the kingdom of Satan, His words ignored, His deeds distorted. He had shown this supreme act of power in the forgiving of sins, in the casting out of devils; He was hurt to find Himself denounced on this very account, as a blasphemer, and as beingHimself possessed. He was hurt to have been rejected as the Son of Man; but when the Spirit of God was despised He was indignant. The first He would endure, this last He would not; in His defense of Him-self He would still be content to continue toappeal, but for the last His wrath was eloquent to terror…

“For the moment the Pharisees were silenced… The people stood about, equally silenced, for nevermore had the Master spoken with such vehemence. It was the beginning of the parting of the ways, and they themselves must soon decide one way or the other.” —Taken from The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ by Archbishop Alban Goodier, SJ
