Pentecost Sunday - May 31, 2020

“Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.” Psalm 104:30

The Holy Spirit Gives Us New Life This weekend we are celebrating the great Solemnity of Pentecost, which means 50, fifty days after Easter. This 50th day marks the Birthday of the Church through the fulfilment of the Paschal Mystery, that is, the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the Jewish tradition, Pentecost was the celebration of receiving the commandments from God 50 days after their Exodus from Egypt. It was a celebration of God’s covenant with his people. Today, we are celebrating that new and eternal covenant with God as he sends forth the Holy Spirit.

On the day of the first Pentecost we heard about how the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages of the mighty acts of God.

Then the psalm asked God: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.” We can add to that and make it personal, “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew my life, and the lives of those I love.”

The Holy Spirit gives us new life and is present in us as the source of our new life in Christ. The Holy Spirit is the Fruit of the Love Relationship between God the Father and God the Son that pours forth into our lives.

Through Baptism and Confirmation we have all received the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts increase within us as we allow the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts. These Seven Fold Transformations are:

Wisdom, which gives us a “taste” for the things of God. We experience delight in what is right. Understanding is the gift of the Holy Spirit that gives us a deeper sense of the meaning of the teachings of the Church. Knowledge enables us to judge everything by the light of heaven. Counsel helps us to speak the words that will draw others closer to God. Fortitude gives us the strength to keep trying to love and be faithful to God and to our calling when things get tough. Piety gives us reverence towards God and towards each human person. Fear of the Lord helps us to avoid sin because we love God and don’t want to offend him.

If St. John Paul II petitioned the Holy Spirit each day to increase these gifts in greater abundance, so should we.

As we conclude the Easter Season on Pentecost Sunday, let our daily prayer petitions be: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.” “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew my life, and the lives of those I love.”

Pentecost blessings, Fr. John Poncini Pastor

+ SPIRITUALITY IN THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS +

A Reflec on from Newlyweds A Message for All Like most people, in addi on to our closed offices, we are unable to a end Mass un l further no ce. For the first me in our lives we are not able to go to Mass on Sunday! This unusual circumstance has given us the opportunity to come to a more profound understanding of our iden ty as a domes c church. About a month ago, I unpacked enough boxes to find and hang some of our sacred art in a place of prominence in our living room. Underneath is a trunk to act as our altar, adorned with flowers, candles, and sacramentals. Our li le Prayer Altar has assumed a new and special meaning at this

me.

We are taking life one day and one step at a me, as I am sure you all are, too. As I write, I’m reminded of Ma hew 6:25-34, most specifically verse 34, “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.” Each day is filled with a blessing from God.

We pray this will be a me of growth for us in every way, but especially in our faith, our iden ty as a domes c church, and in our ability to love one another with the selfless love which our voca on of Marriage calls us to.

Where is Your Cell? Robert Ellsberg - Publisher of Orbis Books

Defini on - Cell, noun: A small room in which a prisoner is locked up or in which a monk or nun sleeps.

Cells come in many different forms. In this par cular me of social distancing, what can we learn from our own cell? For one thing, even enforced idleness can be a me of going deeper, of exploring new worlds, of being more a en ve to the present moment, of entering into a spirit of compassion and solidarity with the wider world. Even the small space between our four walls contains many mansions.

We can pray that our cells teach us lessons that will help us endure and return eventually to a world more precious and beau ful than we le it. In the mean me, I take heart from the words of the famous solitary Julian of Norwich: "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."

Memorial to Blessed Virgin Mary June 1, 2020 The Marian tle of “Mother of the Church” was given to the Blessed Mother by Blessed Pope Paul VI at the Second Va can Council. Pope Francis decreed a new obligatory Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, on February 11, 2018, the Congrega on for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments inscribed this into the General Roman Calendar. This memorial is celebrated every year on the Monday a er Pentecost.
