Update on

BRIDGE TO OUR FUTURE Howard Rand

We have been focusing during our summer months upon building a Bridge to Our Future. We know by now that this is an intermittent fund appeal. In reality, what is "the bridge"? The bridge is you and me and us, participating as the family of God, in overcoming our deficit of $18,000. To date you all have given and pledged over $12,500. Somehow, as we work on this, I remember the wise words of my Grandmother Pokrandt when I grew up: "Many hands make light work." That reminds me of the trust game I had the courage to play in one of the last years of my ministry. In the trust game I dared to fall back in a circle of junior high youth, who promised to catch me. It worked! They did! No matter which direction I fell, they were there. I relaxed...Became confident.

But the next trust game was more threatening. These kids were supposed to lift me up together. I would simply lie still as they raised me up. Me? 200+ pounds, 60+ years, sore back and all? It seemed like a game of chicken to me! But who wants to quit before a bunch of young teens?

"Many hands make light work." They did it again! And we also are called together to be uplifting this Family of God. Your hands and mine are raised together in a Fund Appeal: In work, in support, in giving, in prayer. Thanks be to God for our challenge....We dare to lift each other up anew as we complete the task in September. We still have a ways to go to reach our goal of $18,000. If you have not yet responded to the call, please do so as soon as possible. Your special gift, marked "Bridge to Our Future," can do it.

"I urge everyone, between now and 21 September, to think about how they can contribute. Let us work together to ensure that the Road from Rio leads us to sustainable development, sustainable peace… and a secure future for all."

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Towards the ideals of peace

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed

around the world on 21 September. The General

Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to

strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and

among all nations and peoples.

Sustainable Peace...

This year, world leaders, together with civil society, local

authorities and the private sector, will be meeting in Rio

de Janeiro, Brazil for the United Nations Conference on

Sustainable Development to renew political commitment

to long term sustainable development.

It is in the context of the Rio+20 Conference that

“Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future” is the

theme chosen for this year's observance of the

International day of Peace.

There can be no sustainable future without a sustainable

peace. Sustainable peace must be built on sustainable

development.

...From Sustainable Development...

The root causes of many conflicts are directly related to

or fuelled by valuable natural resources, such as

diamonds, gold, oil, timber or water. Addressing the

ownership, control and management of natural

resources is crucial to maintaining security and restoring

the economy in post-conflict countries.

Good natural resource management can play a central

role in building sustainable peace in post-conflict

societies.

...For a Sustainable Future

The International Day of Peace offers people globally a

shared date to think about how, individually, they can

contribute to ensuring that natural resources are

managed in a sustainable manner, thus

reducing potential for disputes, and paving the road to a

sustainable future, the "Future We Want".

Do you know your Baptismal date?Do you know your Baptismal date?Do you know your Baptismal date?Do you know your Baptismal date?

The two most important anniversaries for a Christian are the anniversary of his death, and the anniversary of his baptism. Death marks his or her entrance into the mystery of life after death. Baptism is marking our entrance into the community of Christ, becoming a citizen of God’s reign.

We would like to start publishing baptismal anniversaries. If you can find yours, please notify the church office. Thank you for your participation! Directory update:
