The Ascension of the Lord May 8, 2016

Scriptural Reflection for the Week “… that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.” (see John 17:20-26) How much the Lord Jesus cares for us! How much the Lord Jesus desires us! How much the Lord Jesus thirsts for us! These words of our Lord came from His deep, person-al prayer to the Father. Imagine, thinking that the very love Jesus experiences of His Father that we may ex-perience as well! Yet this is Jesus’ prayer. And of course Jesus doesn’t stop there. As He prays that this love of the Father may be in us He also prays that He Himself may be in us. If we want to know the full meaning of receiving Holy Communion it is right here! This is what Jesus wants us to think about when we come up to receive the Host. It is the time for Heaven to be joined to Earth and it happens in our very heart and soul. I hope this prayer of Jesus for you makes you more aware of the privilege and gift we have at the Catholic Mass. This intimate union of God and man can only be effected at Mass. No where else does the desire of Jesus to be in us take place. Under-standing the truth of the moment when I receive the Lord in Holy Communion should make me want to get down on my knees and offer the most sincere act of thanksgiving possible! Happy Mother’s Day 2016 to all the Moms in our parish. May Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our Mother be a sure guide and support for all Christian mothers! Mother’s Day Novena Please return your envelope which lists your intentions in TODAY’S Collection. Community Bible Study We are offering this Study to all those interested in our Elmont neighborhood. Stewardship… Reflection

Today’s reading contains the somber warning that Jesus is coming soon and will bring to each person the reward that his or her conduct deserves. Has my stewardship of the blessings entrusted to me been

such that I could respond joyfully, “Amen!”?

Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our

parish whose giving - whether of alms or of service - will be an expression of both spiritual and

corporal works of mercy, making them missionaries of mercy to a world

in such need of it.

How a simple idea helped 7,000 home-less pregnant women

(CNA).-Christopher Bell was in his twenties and liv-ing in Times Square when he heard something that sounded like the voice of God. Bell had been work-ing with homeless and runaway kids in New York City, when he encountered pregnant women with young children who had no homes. At the time, Bell said there were no long-term programs that were ministering to pregnant women with other children. “I thought there was a need to have longer-term housing for mothers and babies, but I didn’t know what to do,” Bell told CNA. “I was close to Fr. Bene-dict Groeschel, and I complained to him, ‘Why doesn’t somebody do something to help these young mothers and children?’”

Fr. Groeschel, founder of the Community of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, told Bell that he would help him start the ministry that would eventually become Good Counsel Homes. Hearing those words from Fr. Groeschel “sounded almost like the voice of God and it was a great encouragement,” Bell recalled. Good Counsel Homes was founded soon after in 1985 with the goal of helping wom-en with children get off the streets and find stability through work or education. “As soon as we opened on March 10, 1985, we were getting calls from women who were pregnant and women who were pregnant with other born children... So we responded to the need and took in the mothers,” Bell said.

Since 1985, Good Counsel Homes has aided more than 7,000 women at their residence homes and have expand-ed to four additional houses in New York and New Jersey. During their time at Good Counsel Homes, the women in residence are offered finance, health, relationship and life-skills classes, as well as information about child growth and development. The average stay for a mother and her children at Good Counsel Homes is about 13 months, which allows them enough time to establish a job or some kind of stable independence.

Bell still remembers the first woman who came to Good Counsel Homes. She had a small son, but said that he was not her first child. She previously had an abortion when she was in high school, having been told that her nine-week-old baby in utero was a “blob of bloody tissue.”

After this experience, Bell found that about half of the women who came through Good Counsel Homes had been involved in an abortion. He decided to start an extension ministry of Good Counsel Homes called Lumina, to help individuals who had been affected by an abortion. “Lumina is not only for the women of Good Counsel to learn about post-abortion healing, but also for women and men and siblings around the country to be educated and to find groups and healing and hope,” Bell said, adding “we want all of those involved in abortion to know that God can forgive you.” Bell has experienced countless oth-er difficult situations in which the women at Good Counsel Homes have been victims of rape or incest. He also re-called a woman who had been advised by her doctor to abort because her unborn child could potentially be born with defects.

“It's horribly unfortunate and really incomprehensible to me that doctors in these kinds of situations only offer pregnant women a termination,” he reflected. “We know that even if the child is only going to live a few moments, it’s healthier physically, and it’s healthier psychologically, and certainly it’s healthier spiritually for the mother to give birth to her child - to let nature and to allow God to have his way.” Over the years, there have almost been 1,000 births from the women who have resided at Good Counsel Homes. They have also been instrumental in opening additional maternity homes in eight other states across the country. However, Bell says this “is not enough.”

“We are now looking to open or merge with other mater-nity homes,” Bell stated, saying they will accept women of all statuses, regardless of poor mental health or addictive behaviors. “We want to take women in and try to help them make those next big steps. And we’d like to see oth-er homes like ours open throughout the country.”

The Good Counsel Homes hotline is (800)723-8331.

MAY… MONTH OF THE BLESSED MOTHER

By Rev. Johnny R. Mendonca

The Catholic Church dedicates certain months of the year to a particular devotion. May is the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary. By the time of Pope Pius IX's dec-laration of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854, May devotions to the Blessed Mother had become universal. May crownings and other special May events in honor of Mary, such as public recitation of the rosary, stem from this time. Paul VI wrote a short encyclical in 1965 using the Month of Mary devotion as a means of obtaining prayers for peace. He urged the faithful to make use of this practice which is "gladdening and consoling" and by which the Blessed Virgin Mary is honored and the Christian people are enriched with spiritual gifts. The month of May is the "month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady," and it is the occasion for a "moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world [pay] to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God's mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance" (Paul VI: Encyclical on the Month of May, no. 1). In May of 2002 Pope John Paul II said, "Today we begin the month dedicat-ed to Our Lady a favorite of popular devotion. In accord with a long-standing tradition of devotion, parishes and families continue to make the month of May a 'Marian' month, celebrating it with many devout liturgical, catechetical and pastoral initiatives!" In the following prayer, offered during the Marian month of May, we ask the Blessed Virgin Mary for her protection and for the grace to imitate her in her love of Christ, and Christ in His love of her. As the Mother of Christ, she is our mother, too, and we look to her for guidance as we look to our mothers on earth.

To the Blessed Virgin Mary for May

O most august and blessed Virgin Mary! Holy Mother of God! Glorious Queen of heaven and earth! Powerful protectress of those who love thee, and unfailing advocate of all who invoke thee! Look down, I beseech thee, from thy throne of glory on thy devoted child; accept the solemn offering I present thee of this month, specially dedicated to thee, and receive my ardent, humble desire, that by my love and fervor I could worthily honor thee, who, next to God, art deserving of all honor. Receive me, O Mother of Mercy, among thy best beloved children; extend to me thy maternal tenderness and solicitude; obtain for me a place in the Heart of Jesus, and a special share in the gifts of His grace. O deign, I beseech thee, to recognize my claims on thy protection, to watch over my spiritual and temporal interests, as well as those of all who are dear to me; to infuse into my soul the spirit of Christ, and to teach me thyself to become meek, humble, charitable, patient, and submissive to the will of God. May my heart burn with the love of thy Divine Son, and of thee, His blessed Mother, not for a month alone, but for time and eternity; may I thirst for the pro-motion of His honor and thine, and contribute, as far as I can, to its exten-sion. Receive me, O Mary, the refuge of sinners! Grant me a Mother's blessing and a Mother's care, now, and at the hour of my death. Amen.

All Catholics, Parents, in particular, should encourage Marian devotion in their children, since the non-Catholic Christians they encounter today often downplay the role that the Blessed Virgin Mary played in our salvation through her joyous "Yes" to the will of God.

St. Vincent de Paul Society & Parish Social Ministry (OUTREACH)

This past week we celebrated the Feast of the Ascension. This celebration reminds us that Christ’s saving work

on earth continued through his disciples and now it continues through us. Here at St. Vincent’s we work to help

those who are in distress and need assistance. During the month of April we were able to assist 47 households, consisting of 65 adults, 39 children and 8 senior citizens. This could not have been done without your contributions to the poor box and the food you

bring each week.

This week the pantry is in need of instant potatoes, syrup, canned carrots, black beans, and mixed vegetables. However any non-perishable food item will be gratefully

received.

Please inform anyone that you know who is in need of assistance, that he or she should come to Parish Outreach

on any Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9am and 1pm. They will be happily assisted.

Happy Mother’s Day

Community Bible Study

How Can I Help This Week? If you are part of our parish, you are an important

part of our Community Bible Study. Here's how

you can help:

1) Be welcoming. Newcomers may be very uncomfortable. Let's make them feel like staying!

2) Make our church beautiful. Let's take

personal responsibility to offer a beautiful place of worship for newcomers. Little things like picking up that piece of paper or garbage or wiping the sink when we leave the rest room.

3) Get the word out – Mention it friends, family, Facebook, Twitter! If you see a store without one of our signs, ask to put one up! Our web site is http://ElmontBibleStudy.org, Twitter: @ElmontCBS

4) Most of all, thank you for your labor of Prayer.

For any questions or to volunteer, please contact John Sullivan – (207) 985-7880 [email protected]
