Job Description:4 Key Elements
1. Job Title: name of the position– Accurately reflects the work performed– Corresponds to similar jobs in the industry
2. Job Summary: overview of the position– Describes the primary purpose of the role– Outlines the basic functions of the job– Ranges from 1 sentence to 1-2 paragraphs
3. Key Responsibilities/Duties: list of main functions– Highlights key functions the performed – Include only high-level responsibilities (not minor tasks)– Bulleted statements starting with an action verb
4. Minimum Job Requirements: list of qualifications– Explains minimum knowledge, skills, abilities necessary– Include: education, previous experience, skills, & licensure

1. Job Title:– Keep it simple and similar to positions within the same
industry
2. Job Summary:– Keep it broad so the reader can understand the main
purpose of the role without going into too much detail about specific responsibilities
3. Key Responsibilities/Duties:– Arrange responsibilities in a logical order (most important
first or in the order they happen)
4. Minimum Job Requirements:– List only those required to do the job, not ideal qualifications
you’re looking for
Group Work: Staffing Plan1. As a group, brainstorm types of staff your business will need to
accomplish its mission using pg. 5– If you plan to grow in years 2 & 3 and will need more staff, list new
employees on pg 6– Save salary research for homework
2. As a group, brainstorm job descriptions for each staff role you need using pg. 9-10– If you have more than 4 employees, have each teammate draft a
few within their workbook– Use internet to research job titles used for positions with similar
responsibilities– Save salary research for homework
3. As a group, outline how your staff will be organized using pg. 11-12– Use horizontal and vertical lines to show relationship between staff
4. As a group, brainstorm staff salaries for each position– Decide if you will pay them an annual salary or an hourly rate– Use internet to research competitive salary rates for similar
positions
