The range extends from low cost rolled products, suitable for low precision actuation, up to the highest levels of precision required for high accuracy positioning requirements e.g. machine tools. This catalogue gives details of standard stocked products only. Details of the full range of products, together with comprehensive technical data are available in the general ball screw catalogue No. 401E. Most products are available ‘off the shelf’ and end journals can be machined in our workshop. End support bearings and bearing units are also available - refer pages 8, 9 & 10. In a service or breakdown situation some ball screws (depending on degree of damage) can be refurbished in our workshop. This allows the machine to continue operating until a new ball screw is purchased. Ball screws are used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from low accuracy ‘transport’ screws to extremely high accuracy precision positioning screws. The principal features distinguishing different ranges of ball screws are: 1. Lead accuracy - the degree to which rotational movements of the shaft are translated into exactly proportional linear movement of the nut. Available lead accuracies are designated T7 and T10 in accordance with ISO3408, DIN69051 and JIS1192. 2. Axial play and preload - the degree to which a ball nut may be moved in the direction of the axis of the screw without any rotation of either screw or nut. Preload may be regarded as negative axial play, although in practice it is measured as drag torque - the torque required to rotate one member relative to the other in the absence of any other applied load. 3. Life/load relationship - this is defined by reference to the Basic Dynamic Load Rating, which 6 is the average axial load over the ball screw's duty cycle which gives a projected life of 10 revolutions. Lead accuracy and axial play are determined mainly by the method of manufacture of the ball screw shaft - in general, high lead accuracy and zero/negative axial play is associated with precision ground ball screws and relatively higher cost. Low lead accuracy and positive axial play is associated with low cost rolled ball screws. Basic Dynamic Load Rating is determined mainly by the nut circuitry i.e. shaft diameter, number of balls, size of balls and type of recirculation etc., and so high life units can be produced in both rolled and ground versions. SELECTION OF SUITABLEBALL SCREWSIZES

The basic data required to perform the calculations necessary to check ball screw designs are:1. The maximum axial load2. The average axial load3. The maximum rotational speed required, or alternatively the maximum axial speed of the

ball nut4. The distance between bearings, and the types of bearings envisaged

Using the above data, various checks on the strength and life of the ball screw should be made, the most significant of which are buckling load, critical speed, maximum speed (DN value) and life. Full details of the methods of calculation are available in the General Catalogue No. 401E. If assistance is required, please contact our Technical Support Staff at your local branch.

To meet the special needs of customers, a carefully selected range of rolled and precision ground ball screws is now available from stock.

The principal features distinguishing different ranges of ball screws are:

3. Life/load relationship - this is defined by reference to the Basic Dynamic Load Rating, which 6is the average axial load over the ball screw's duty cycle which gives a projected life of 10

revolutions.
