Police deployed at taxi rank aftergunfire exchange

The cause of the violence remainsunclear.

Police spokesperson Colonel JayNaicker said the shooting happenedat the rank in full viewof commuters.

“The two associations have beenat loggerheads formanyyears.Policehave been deployed at the rank andare monitoring the situation. Noarrests have been made.”

The ongoing feud between theassociations has claimed many livesfromboth sides in the past few years.

In April one person was woundedduring a shoot-out between securityguards from rival taxi associations.

In July taxi drivers argued overroutes once again ‘holding the townto ransom’.

KZN MEC for Transport,Community Safety and LiaisonWillies Mchunu noted with concernanother shooting spree at the rank.

“I am shocked to learn of this bar-

baric incident.Noamountof violenceand intimidation can bring stabilityand resolveproblems in the industry. The area seems to be experiencing anew wave of killings.

“We have started processes as adepartment to intervene and resolvetheir dispute.

“I am confident that police willarrest the perpetrators of this crime.I appeal for calm and stability. Thisnew wave of attacks is threateningbusiness investment in the area thathas a huge potential,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu reiterated his commit-ment to work with the leadership ofthe taxi industry in looking for solu-tionsin‘allthechallengesconfrontingthe taxi industry’.

The situationat the rankhas sincebeen calm, however, a constantpolice presence is being maintainedto counter further possible incidentsthis week.

two days.MsomiMbusiseni (35) is currently

recovering at Albert Luthuli Hospitalin Durban.

DoctorssayhehassufferedPnemothorax and renal failure. Ballito resi-dent and Specialised Rescue Unit’sQuentin Power, who attended thescene, said he had also broken somebones.

“Hehad fractured footandbrokenribs with some contusions on hischest and back, was severely de-hydrated, we suspected spinal inju-ries and internal injuries possibly tolungs due to the nature of the falland entrapment,” said Power.

The community said Mbusiseni(35) had been on his way home from

his uncle’s house a few kilometresaway and then went missing. He al-legedly fell whilewalking. The indu-na alerted the police and rescue ser-vice after one of the herders appar-entlyheardmoaningcomingfromthemountain side. Rescue teams got thecall just before noon on Saturday.

IN 1998, my newly single motherand four of her children movedinto our new home in Port Dun-

ford, whichcameasahugeshock for“township kids” who grew up inplaces like eSikhawini and uMlazi.

The place was quite rural backthen and we didn’t have televisionuntil late 1998; even then, it was ablack-and-white one with a screenthe size of a large cellphone.

The place wasn’t so bad, I mean,

wehadwideopenspacesandadrive-way as long as some suburbanstreets. We used to have clear viewsof the green planes around us as faras the eye can see, save for somegum-tree forests here and there.Mother tried her best to look after usand we were happy.

There is one thing I cansingleoutthat aided in my missing the town-ship life over the three yearswe livedthere - flushing toilets. One seldomconsiders the importance of havinga flushing toilet in the house. Yes,sure it is quite imperative for hygienepurposes, but there is also thedignitypart.

Don’t getmewrong,not that Iwas

unhappy with the pit loo in the back-yard, I had forgotten any better thenandat eight Iwas fairlysatisfiedwiththe situation.

Wehadapit latrineacoupleofdoz-en metres from the “bedroomhouse” (there was also a lounge anda separate kitchen house). The toilethad four ricketywalls andadoor thatwas toosmall for the frameso itneverreally closed.

For those who have never usedone, a pit latrine consists of a holewhere your excrement drops to bedevoured by all manner of microbesand creepy crawlies, the way natureintended. One of the bugs that wouldoccasionally find its way in there

was a rather loud bumblebee, thesound of which would dissuade mefrom blocking the stinger’s only wayout with my exposed toosh.

One could not complain much, considering that somepeoplestill usethe bucket system - a system that isunderstandably awkward for boththeproducerof thewasteandthemu-nicipal employee tasked with han-dling the stuff.

KZNCogta’sNomusaDube-Ncubelaunched an attack onmunicipalitiesstill implementing the bucket systeminKZNafter the president set a dead-line of September 2014 during hisState of the Nation Address in June.

One such municipality was ouruMhlathuze, which initially deniedhaving any records of the system inits jurisdiction, butwas later leftwithegg on its face when a visit fromCogta representatives found a differ-ent story. The system was in fullswing in at least 83 households inMandlazini just outside RichardsBay. In an efforttomeetthe presiden-tialdeadline,thesehouseholdswillbeprovided with pit latrines, an “up-grade” costing –wait for it - just over

R10 000 each. Why not build propertoilets instead? Well, there is anongoing project to have a seweragesystem installed for the area over aperiod of time.

Until then, close to R100 000 willbe used to fix an issue that nevershould have been in the first place.

I find it sad that it took the presi-dent setting this deadline beforesomethingwasdone. I couldmentiona plethora of incidents where peoplehaveactuallydiedasaresultof fallinginto a toilet, Chief is the six-year-oldboy who died in a school pit toilet inJanuary in Mpumalanga.

Then therewas themanwhowasfound dead after going missing for aweek inFebruary.Hewas found inaneSikhawini pit latrine.

Yes, it looks like I have written acolumn about poop andpit toilets, but I am trying tohighlight theplightof some people from a perspective Iactually understand. From personalexperience I can tell you that pittoilets are, well, crap, because theyare a direct attack on human dignity. They need to be done away with amassive sense of urgency.

ONE of the most valued ambitions of StangerHospital is, according to the hospital, to strivetowards achieving the quality of service andstandards experienced on a private level.

In an effort to achieve this, StangerHospi-tal’s pharmacy department held aprogramme duringPharmacyWeek (1-5Sep-tember).

The theme this year for Pharmacy Weekwas “Use antibiotics wisely”.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the mostpressing pharmaceutical challenges theworld is facing today. Theaimof PharmacyWeek this year was to incorporate the themeoutlinedby theSAPCwithinaprogrammethatis both educational and effective. This wasdone because antibiotic resistance is a chal-lenge that affects both health professionals ofvarious levels as well as patients alike.

Monday, 1 September saw the officiallaunch of Pharmacy Week at the hospital.

The outpatient team had prepared postersto display to patients in the waiting area.

Different activities took place throughoutthe week as presentations were done in wait-ing areas as well as the clinics. The chronicteam from the pharmacy also visited theKwaDukuza and Groutville clinics as well asthe RA Moodley Home for the Aged.
