Have you noticed that the quiet time period for rest, review and reflectiondoesn’t seem to happen anymore? Where does the time go?

Here at Perkins Center for the Arts we moved from an eventful spring ofclasses, recitals and Handcrafted to a busy summer full of kids, camp andclasses. It is a joy to have childrens’ laughter, questions and ideas fill our air.That, along with old friends and new students filling our classes has madethe summer fly by.

Fall is coming and we have some wonderful events to tell you about aswell as continuing our visual and performing arts classes and conservatorylessons. Here’s what’s ahead:

n September 9—5th Annual Wiffle Ball Cup. This is a festive days of fun, wiffle ball games, arts,yoga, corn hole and fun foods on the beautiful 5 acre park that our Moorestown center calls home.

n September 14—Perkins Center in Collingswood will host Distributing Dignity, an event that sup-ports the needs of incarcerated, homeless and sheltered women. The purpose is to create awarenessand collect donations of personal products and underwear for these women.

n September 21—Our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception and the Annual Meeting inMoorestown.

We’d like you to spend your Wednesdays at Perkins Center. We are excited to provide the followingfree programs on Wednesdays. On October 5th our second season of Lunch & Learn will be returningto the Moorestown living room. We will introduce a new program, Coffee & Classics, join us for amorning with the exceptional musicians from our conservatory faculty and at least one cup of PerkinsCenter coffee.

n October 7—2nd Annual Moorestown Open Studio Tour, an opportunity to visit the studios ofmany of Moorestown’s artists.

n October 14—1st Annual Collingswood Open Studio Tour with another tour of Collingswood’s ex-ceptional artists’ studios.

During the week of October 2nd Perkins Center will collaborate with The Eagle Theatre in Ham-monton on a unique and innovative theatre experience as they present The Shape of Things. Over the5-week run of the play several arts organizations will have a week long exhibition in the audiencespace, the audience will be moved to the stage with the actors. This play is set in an arts space and dis-cusses issues around censorship. Along with Perkins Center, The Noyes Museum of Art, Wheaton Artsand Cultural Center and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with have a week of exhibition in thetheatre space.

n October 27—40th Anniversary of Perkins Center for the Arts’ Incorporation, we will have our4th Annual Pumpkin Party on the lawn in Moorestown. Games, music and 40 fabulous claypumpkins will be a part of this festive celebration. Come in costume or as you are!

n October 29—3rd Annual #Before I Die event with The Courier Post and Samaritan Hospice. Thisis a remarkable immersion into the upside of thinking about/planning for death while living. Comefor storytelling, music, counseling and support, yoga, planning information, arts experiences and re-freshments.

Perkins Center for the Arts 2017 fiscalyear ran from July 1, 2016 through June30, 2017. Perkins Center presented 362programs in FY17 and served a total au-dience of 36,867.

Highlights include:n 1,516 participants in 160 weekly visual and

performing arts classes in 42 weeks, n 983 participants in weekly conservatory of

music lessons in 50 weeks,n 116 children attending 2-week daily summer

camp sessions over a 39 day periodn 12 area schools & 13,500 children and adults

were served through the ARTS in-school resi-dency program over a 240 day period.

n 3,007 people experienced music performancesthrough:u 4 free outdoor concertsu 3 free public performancesu 6 DeCafe Concertsu 17 conservatory student recital perform-

ancesu 4 arts & healing performances in area long-

term care facilitiesn The artwork of 275 fine artists was presented

in 8 juried and curated art exhibitions. A totalaudience of 9,094 viewed these exhibitions.

n Fine artists were recognized through present-ing 2 juried exhibitions and by awarding 2museum purchase awards (at $600 each) and10 juror’s awards (at $100 each).

n 30 2-week full-day Camp scholarships.n 9 year long drum ensemble scholarships.

u Each of these scholarship recipients is aresident of Camden, NJ.

n 15 scholarships awarded for weekly music in-struction over a 40 week period.

n 10 scholarships awarded for 10-week artclasses

n 475 professional artists were supportedthrough employment in the ARTS program,Visual and Performing Arts classes, Conserva-tory of Music, Performances, and SummerArts and Eco Camp.

n 475 people generously volunteered their timein support of Perkins Center for the Arts

Community Events included:n Wiffle Ball Fest, a community celebration de-

signed to build community awareness aroundthe public arboretum that surrounds PerkinsCenter’s Moorestown Headquarters. 300 peo-ple attended this community event.

n Moorestown Open Studio Tour, a commu-

nity event that was designed to bring aware-ness of the artists living and working in homestudios located in the 08057 zip code. 200people participated in the inaugural tour andthe experience will be expanded to includeCollingswood artists in FY18.

n Mystery Night, a unique performance art ex-perience designed to build interest in the his-toric site where Perkins Center isheadquartered. 40 people attended this event.

n Before I Die a community celebration de-signed to use a cultural experience as a wayfor people to have difficult conversationsabout death and dying. An audience of 300 at-tended this community event.

n Feed the Body, Feed the Soul a communitycelebration designed to use the act of purchas-ing an artist made bowl as a way to educationabout hunger in Southern New Jersey. 600people attended this community event.

n Handcrafted at Perkins Center, a communitycelebration designed to celebrate area artisanand makers in fine art, craft, food and beverageand recognizing the art in all of these forms ofcreating. 400 people attended this event.

Mabel C.S. D’Olier at theSmithsonianMabel D’Olier was the sister of Alice Perkins andlived in the building that is now the headquar-ters of Perkins Center for the Arts. Mabel is nowpart of an exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Na-tional Museum of American History. The exhibi-tion, Uniformed Women of the Great War,explores the active and largely overlooked roleplayed by women throughout World War I, bothas a part of the preparedness effort before 1917and afterwards as uniformed members of boththe U.S. military and civilian voluntary organiza-tions. Mabel Creth Sullivan D’Olier served inFrance as a volunteer with the American FriendsService Committee, a Quaker organizationformed in 1917. The group provided aid to dis-placed civilians in France, Belgium, Russia, Ser-bia, Austria, and Poland during and after the war.The French government awarded D’Olier the RedCross medal for her service. Perkins Center staffand Mabel’s niece, Pamela Perkins Young visitedthe National Museum of American History onAugust 29 for a tour of the exhibition. MosaicThe goal of this class is to give the participantsall the skills and information that will enablethem to complete one or more projects of theirown choosing. Life Painting & DrawingNOTE DATESThis course is designed to help beginning andpracticing artists develop their figurative paint-ing and drawing skills. Using a live model, bothnude and clothed, students will develop andstrengthen their knowledge of anatomy, gesture,proportion, color, and design. The course willuse the full figure, as well as portraiture, in exer-cises covering monochromatic, limited color,and full color studies. Time spent on each posewill expand throughout the course in an effort toexplore a more complex treatment of form, color,surface, and design. Parent and Child BuildingTogether with ClayAges 5–12 NOTE DATESThis class is designed to provide parents with agreat opportunity for quality time with their kids.Families will be able to work together on fun clayprojects that are developed to be appropriate forthe current season. Each project will start out

Pottery for TeenagersAges 14–18Ideal for students who have taken pottery classesat Perkins in the past, the class will build uponskills achieved by introducing techniques forworking on the potter’s wheel. This class willpresent step-by-step instruction on how to cen-ter, open, and pull up clay in order to createbowls, cups, and plates. Surface decoration, glaz-ing, and hand-building projects also will be ex-plored. 5. Upload pictures of the work you will besubmitting.

We still jury from the actual work. Deliv-ery of your work is still required to completeyour entry process.
