NOVA will participate in the Statewide Tornado Drill on March 12 at 9:45 a.m. This training is a vital component in ensuring the highest level of emergency preparedness at NOVA. The Office of Emergency Management and Planning (OEMP) will disseminate more information as the date nears. OEMP is responsible for providing guidance and direction in all areas of the College’s emergency preparedness, training, and response.

Beware of the differences in tornado terminology and response actions:

Tornado Watch – A tornado watch is issued when severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible in or near the watch area. When a tornado watch is issued, stay tuned to local radio, TV, or NOAA weather radio for information and possible warnings. Consider shelter operations and be prepared to take cover if necessary. Tornado Warning – A tornado warning is issued when a tornado is imminent. When a tornado warn-ing is issued, seek safe shelter immediately.

What to do: Seek shelter in the nearest marked Severe Weather Shelter Area, or an appropriate area capable of providing protection:

Hardened structure Interior hallway or room which is free of windows or other glass structures Go to the lowest level in the building – use stairs; do NOT use elevators

Use your arms to protect your head and neck. Protect your body from flying debris with any avail-able furniture or sturdy equipment. Do NOT open windows. Take account of co-workers and/or students and attempt to locate missing persons if safety permits.

How to be a Fashion Trend Setter: Wear your NOVA Card

First, a little cinematic history. “Badges? We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!” Perhaps you remember this movie line. It appeared in the 1948 movie Treasure of Sierra Madre, and later in Mel Brooks’ 1974 Blazing Saddles. Here are five good reasons to wear your NOVA Card: Your security. In light of recent active shooter events, it behooves us to know who

should and should not be on campus. Your NOVA Card can help tell us this. Your safety. In the event of a campus emergency, students and visitors will naturally

look to faculty and staff for leadership. Your identification as a NOVA employee could expedite effective emergency response and save lives.

Your time. Who wants to hunt through a wallet or pocketbook searching for a NOVA Card to use campus services, such as computers and in the library, or unlocking a door? If you wear it on your person, you’ll know where it is and save time.

Your pocketbook. Retailers offer significant discounts for NOVA Card users. Wear yours, use it and save.

Your community. Show your pride and identify yourself as part of the NOVA commu-nity. A sense of community will make your college experience more meaningful and en-joyable.

If you don’t have your card, sign up for it now at www.nvcc.edu/novacard .
