TASK: Students will compare and contrast how a particular scene is represented in both the book and the film of a single title. Students should consider how characterization, setting, plot, and theme are conveyed in the book and in the film. Students should come to their first English class of the school year prepared to complete an inclass assignment that uses the notes taken over the summer. STEP 1: Choose a title. Choose one title from the list below. You will need to acquire both the book and the film for the title. Many of these titles are available from Montgomery County Public Libraries, and several of the films are available on subscription services such as Netflix or Hulu Plus.

Use the Venn diagram on the back of this sheet to take notes while reading the book and watching the film. This will help you organize your thoughts in order to complete the inclass assignment. STEP 3: Read an additional book of your choice. Choose any book that is gradelevel and schoolappropriate. You will want to take notes on the primary components of the book: title, author, main characters, conflict, resolution, etc. THIS ASSIGNMENT IS DUE DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL. Your English teacher will collect your notes; please bring them with you on the first day of school. Your teacher will ask you to complete an inclass assignment that relies on these notes; you should be prepared to complete that assignment on the first day of school.
