Stephen’s Strands Being a community requires a caring, loving outlook. The love and care of one another is the quality that binds individuals together to become a community. It is important for us to recall four-year-old Austin Perine’s now famous reminder to the Birmingham community, “Don’t forget to show love!” Austin says this to community members as he gives them chicken sandwiches. Austin was watching a video about pandas that showed a mother panda rejecting her cub. Upon seeing this, Austin asked his father, “What’s happened?” Austin’s father, TJ, explained that the cub was now homeless. Their conversation culminated in Austin wanting to know if people could be homeless. When TJ Perine explained that many people were homeless to his son, Austin immediately wanted to use all of his allowance to purchase chicken sandwiches for homeless people in his community. We can learn a lot from Austin’s caring heart for his neighbors. In 2 Corinthians 4:6-7, Paul writes, “For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.” God willingly entrusts us to receive the “treasure” of “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” As the recipients of God’s light and knowledge, our hearts need to break for our neighbors. We need to be moved by our community challenges because we are those who “have this treasure in clay jars.”

We are all people who live in earthen-ware pots that show the scars of living on earth. We have chipped edges and cracked pots. But like Austin Perine says, “Don’t forget to show love!” We know what it is like to face challenges and experience heartache. Let’s let the light of the knowledge of the glory of God shine out of our cracked vessels so that we become a community bound together by the love of God which we freely share with our neighbors just as God has freely shared it with us!

“Don’t forget to show love!” - Stephen

It’s a wrap…and a great success! Ignite Kids performed “O Chicken of Little Faith” and shared Jesus’s message to not be afraid for I am with you with a congregation of over 250 on Mother’s Day! Thank you to the students, volunteers from Ignite Kids, Ignite Voices and Today’s Christians for all your hard work. The set was so much fun, the food was delicious, the lines performed beautifully and the songs loud and heartfelt. Ignite Kids celebrated their performance and the end of the Ignite year with a pizza party at Little Creek Park, now an annual tradition. The students ate and played together then closed the year with shopping in the “pop up” Ignite store using the points they earned during the year by attending regularly, memorizing scripture and Bible stories, wearing their shirts and bringing their Bibles and competing as teams in games that challenged their minds and skills. Summer plans for the children include a new Sunday Bible Time series called “Cooking With Jesus” that we are praying will have the kids asking to get to church each week. We also will have a very full and busy summer with Bridgeport children’s camp, an outing to the movies and VBC the week of July 23rd.Thanks to everyone who volunteered with us this year and making this a great year learning more about God’s Holy Word and sharing the love of Jesus through our musical. Kids and congregation – be thinking of who you can invite to join the fun next year! Summer Blessings,Ms. Pam

WelcomeTony Johnston

Our new accompanist Please welcome Tony Johnston as our new accompa-nist, and newest staff member. Tony grew up in Dallas but moved to Mt. Pleasant about a year ago. He has 2 grown daughters (who are more musical than him, he tells), and 5 grandchildren. Working as a liaison for NASA, Tony traveled to Ni-geria often, staying up to 3 months at a time. His home base was in Dallas at a Mobil Oil facility. We feel fortunate to have Tony on board and look forward to him sharing his talents as we praise and wor-ship God.

He came not for an ordinary life, but for an extraordinary life! And he said to them: “Go into all the world

and proclaim the gospel to the whole Creation.”Mark 16:15

Our youth group will travel to San Marcos, TX to renovate the homes of disadvantaged local families. The campers put God’s love into action by working on the homes of the poor, elderly or disabled.

Working alongside contractors, campers will learn the fundamental skills of construction and renovation. On jobsites the kids will repair roofs and gutters, paint, build hand rails and ramps, in-stall flooring and windows, replace decrepit walls and appliances, and so much more.

Help support our youth. Choose an amount you would like to give. Remove the amount from the board and put your donation inside the envelope provided. If you write a check to FUMC, memo Youth Mission Fund. Place your envelope in the altar plates.

It is more blessed to give than to receive.Acts 20:35

2018 Confirmations

RainbowconnectionHot, hot, hot! Busy, busy, busy! Summer is officially here at Rainbow and has brought high temps and many activities for our kids and teachers. For the first field trip of summer our school age class visited Efurd Orchards in Pittsburg to pick strawberries and enjoy some homemade ice cream. We were able to bring back approximately 8 pounds back for us to enjoy at snack time. After berry picking we stopped by the splash pad in Mt. Pleasant to cool off and enjoy a picnic lunch. All of the teachers, an even some of the students, have been busy preparing the rooms to be painted!! We are excited and grateful for Rainbow to be getting much needed updates and are incredibly thankful to everyone who has helped to make it happen. Rainbow is truly blessed to have such great support from the church family. As we are preparing for our remodel, we are also preparing for our annual Texas Rising Star monitoring visit. One area we are focusing on for improvement is our outdoor environment. We are hoping to add music walls and water walls to all three playgrounds. For the music walls we are gathering pots, pans, metal hubcaps and anything other objects that would make interesting sounds. For the water walls we are collecting funnels and various types of plastic tubing that would allow the children to pour water through them. If anyone has any items such as these they would like to get rid of we would gladly take them off your hands! We are looking forward to a busy and productive summer at Rainbow!
