• Why We Loan Equipment:– You can borrow equipment in order to complete assignments required in SIAT courses
– Equipment is not loaned for personal use

• Who Can Borrow Equipment:– Limited to students currently registered in an IAT course
– Must have attended the workshop– Achieved a perfect score on the quiz– Received a C sticker

• Borrowing Process:– Book equipment in advance– Do all necessary pre-production work– Borrow equipment– Take photos– Upload and clear camera memory– Return equipment

• Borrowing:– Book for the current or following week in person or by phone• 778-782-7411
– Bookings are recorded in the booking binder on the Library counter
– You can sign up only once on each booking sheet (for example, one booking a week for a still camera)

• Borrowing:– You can pick up booked equipment between 1:00pm and 3:00pm
– Loan Period is overnight– Return by 12:00 noon (Friday loans are due Monday)
– Check your receipt for the correct due date and time
– Check all components are included and in working order before leaving the Library

• Returning:– Make sure all kit components are returned
– Return to the library staff - do not leave on the counter
– Notify staff of any damaged or missing parts
– Return on time• Late fees $3 per HOUR, up to a maximum of $200 total

• General Responsibilities:– Assemble and test all equipment before leaving the Library
– Use equipment at your own risk– Know how to operate the equipment correctly
– Minimize wear and tear on the equipment– Notify a Library staff member immediately if the equipment is not working properly
– Return the equipment on time so other students can borrow it

• Equipment Damage and Loss:– You are responsible for any equipment you borrow
– You will have to pay for the repair or replacement of equipment damaged while on loan to you• Camera repairs generally range from $50 - $300
– You will have to pay the full replacement cost of any equipment that is lost or stolen while it is on loan to you:• Camera replacement generally ranges from $500 - $2500

• Camera Care Cautions:– Do not drop the camera– Keep away from liquids and moisture– Keep away from heat and magnetic sources– Do not force memory cards, batteries or lenses in or out of the camera
– Do not hit or shake the camera– Keep camera in a safe dry place when not in use
– If in doubt, read the manual or ask for help

• Loading the Memory Card:– Make sure the camera is off– Slide the memory slot cover in the direction of the arrow to open it
– Push the memory card as shown until it locks into place
– Do not touch the terminals on the back of the memory card

• Loading the Memory Card:– To remove the memory card, push on it until it clicks and releases.
– Close the memory card cover securely

• Loading Batteries:– Be sure that the camera power is off
– Slide the battery cover lock in the direction of the arrow and open the cover
– Insert the batteries– Close the cover– Library provides rechargeable batteries

• Lens Cleaning:– Only used approved debris free lens cloth or brush and lens cleaning solution
– Rub gently in a circular motion, don’t force
– Pour the cleaning solution on the cloth, rather then directly on the lens

• Resolution:– Canon 4 megapixels
• The largest photo it will take is made up of 4 million pixels (2274 x 1704)
• Good for prints up to about 11” x 14”
– Can take photos in three smaller sizes– To adjust, press the FUNCTION button. Go to the bottom subcategory with the 4-way controller and choose from the different sizes

• Compression:– More compression means:
• Lower quality images• More photos will fit on a given storage device
– Superfine; highest quality and largest file size
– Normal; highly compressed and smallest file size
– For JPEG compression, press SET when you are in the bottom FUNCTION subcategory and choose between the three options

• Shooting Mode Dial:– Green or AUTO mode:
• Used for quick and easy photos in ideal conditions
• Limited adjustments
– P pr Program mode:• Ideal for making extra adjustments e.g. overriding the AUTO flash modes or exposure settings

• Flash and Macro:– Flash:
• Always on, always off or automatic modes
• Press the flash symbol to cycle through these modes
– Macro Mode:• Use for subjects between 5 and 45cm away from the camera
• Press the smaller flower on the 4-way controller

• Exposure:– Darken or brighten a scene by overriding the auto exposure:• Press the FUNCTION button• The top menu item is EXPOSURE• Press the left or right side of the controller to decrease or increase the exposure
• Watch the exposure change in the LCD monitor

• White Balance:– Often you need to adjust the camera’s white balance, depending on the color of the light you are shooting in• Use factory preset modes, AUTO or CUSTOM which is full manual
• WHITE BALANCE menu is second from the top in the FUNCTION menu

• White Balance Con’t:• Navigate across the choices with the 4-way controller and choose the one that most closely matches your lighting situation
• You can also check colors in the scene on the LCD display to make sure that the setting is correct. Now press FUNCTION again to return to normal opperation

• Digital Zoom:– All digital cameras have this feature
– Can DEGRADE image quality by enlarging a smaller area of pixels then the full frame
– To disable:• press the MENU button, enter the RECORDING
submenu, and navigate to the fifth item down. Toggle the digital zoom on or off and Press MENU to return to the normal display

• Viewing and Deleting Photos:– Lens should be off/closed– Use the menu buttons and display on camera
– Use arrow key to view next photo– Press trash/delete icon to delete

• Camera to Computer:– Connect using a USB cable– The computer should automatically recognize the device
– Can import photos using Photoshop

• Camera to Computer Cont’d:– Photoshop:
• Resize and edit photos • Format photos for print (TIFF, PSD etc.)• Save files with different compression types e.g. JPEG, GIF, PNG, etc. – For web intended images; different compression types have different results within browsers

• Packing Up:– Erase the memory card– Make sure the camera is turned off– Make sure all camera components and accessories are included
– Return on time
