GROUPS & FEES Each session has a different theme to investigate. Age-appropriate curricula deepen each camper’s knowledge and awareness as he/she returns throughout the summer and over the years. Please see next page for weekly themes.

DISCOVERERS Ages 4 - 5 Half Day 9:00am- 12:00pmFee: $137m/202nmYoung children are naturally curious about the outdoors, eager to see a turtle, smell a flower, feel the cool underside of a log, and search for animal homes in the woods. These outdoor explorations are reinforced with crafts, games, songs and stories. Counselor to camper ratio is 5 to 1 for this group

WANDERERS Ages 5 -6 Full Day 9:00am- 3:30pmFee: $245m/310nmWanderers learn about the different ecosystems that exist at Stony Brook and what may be found in them. Simple observations and investigations provide a foundation of interest and desire to learn more in camp years to come. Wanderers begin their initiation to the natural world through short hikes, hands-on activities and creative endeavors. Counselor to camper ratio is 5 to 1 for this group

RAMBLERS Ages 7-8 Full Day 9:00am- 3:30pmFee: $245m/310nmRamblers become more involved with ecosystem investigations at Stony Brook. During their daily outings, using their senses to identify familiar species of plants and animals, Ramblers are encouraged to explore their own areas of interest as well as further their social skills as they participate in activities, games, and crafts. Counselor to camper ratio is 8 to 1 for this group

EXPLORERS Ages 9 -10 Full Day 9:00am- 3:30pmFee: $245m/310nmExplorers are involved with in-depth studies of their environment, focusing on more complex ecological concepts as they explore the far reaches of the Sanctuary. Highlights include an all-day adventure on a new trail to Lind Farm. Campers can attend multiple weeks without repetition. Counselor to camper ratio is 10 to 1 for this group

After Camp OptionJuly 8 -August 16

Monday – Friday, 3:30 – 6:00 p.m.$80/child/week

This option is available to all campers except Discoverers. Campers who sign up for this option will need to bring a second snack. After our snack, campers will work on additional crafts, go hiking and play games while being supervised by our extended-day staff.

All sessions except Discoverers are full day from 9:00am - 3:30pm. Campers can attend multiple weeks without repetition and are encouraged to do so. Discoverers’ sessions are half day from 9:00am - 12:00pm.

The Fast and the Furriest June 24-28Move to the natural realm as we check out how animals get around. Whether it is flapping, leaping, jet propulsion or just hitching a ride, animals circulate. We will search for examples around the sanctuary and then try some of the movements for ourselves.

Slime Time July 1-5*Uncover some of our slimiest creatures. Look for reptiles and frogs in the ponds and wetlands. Roll over logs in search of salamanders, slugs and other slimy critters. Search for pond creatures with dip nets. Spend a week finding out who’s really slimy. *No Camp July 4th. You may sign up for any or all four days. Special Price $50m/$64nm per day for full day camp and $28m/$43nm for half day.

Wacky Water Week July 8-12Take a wild ride beginning in rivers, lakes, and oceans. Where does water come from? Where does it go? Dip net into the ponds at Stony Brook and make your own aquascope!

Geology Rocks! July 15-19Ever wonder how those large boulders ended up in the woods or how ponds and hills were made? Find out the answers to these and many more geological questions. Learn how to make crystals grow and build a volcano during this earth-shattering week!

Nature Detectives July 22-26Hmmmmmmm, it appears we’ve got a mystery on our hands, Detectives. Tracks. Scat. Bones. Holes. Dens. Tunnels. Fur. Teeth marks. Feathers. It’s all to be found in the woods. What can these “clues” tell us about the animals that live here? Take the challenge, join the academy and become a Nature Detective.

Wild and Crafty July 29 - August 2Use your creativity to find things in nature to turn into art. We will explore the pond, field and forest to find inspirations for our masterpieces.

Spineless Wonders August 5-9Explore the crawling, sliding, hopping, flying world of worms, spiders, snails, pill bugs and insects, all those spineless wonders without backbones. 2

Wild Skies August 12-16Explore the Earth beyond the turf! Observation skills will be fostered as campers learn about sky-related topics such as bird behavior, space, and weather. Through perspective-taking activities like pretending to see from a bird’s eye view, campers will gain a better understanding of the workings of the world above.

Running with the Mammals! August 19-23Explore the world of mammals, learn to read animal trails and navigate the web of life. Investigate skulls and pelts. Use a microscope to look at fur and guess the Mystery Skull. Paint rocks and your face to look like your favorite critter.

Camp Rewind August 26-30What was your favorite part of camp? Did you love the “slime time”? Did you want to make just one more volcano? Do you want to scream “ALLIGATOR” one more time? Then you’re in luck. This is the week that you get to plan as we put the entire summer on rewind!

Science on the SanctuaryADVENTURERS Ages 11 - 13 July 22-26

Who knew that studying the ecosystems at Stony Brook could be so rewarding and fun! During the week we will adventure into the science that makes our research programs happen. Activities will include dragonfly mark and recapture, turtle and wetland surveys, biodiversity, conservation-based games, and more!

Swamp Stompers Ages 9-10 July 15-199:00am- 3:30pm (with optional overnight Thurs.) Fee: $262m/327nmSwamps and wetlands are some of the most amazing habitats on Earth! Spend lots of time searching for salamanders, snakes, and bugs as we visit different sections of Stony Brook’s wetlands to explore vernal pools, swamps and ponds. Those unwilling to stomp in the swamp while getting wet and dirty should not apply. This program includes an optional overnight Thursday evening. Campers may stay overnight or leave after the night hike at 9:30pm and return Friday morning.

Specialty Sessions

Stony Brook at the Little Red SchoolhouseStony Brook is again teaming up with the Sheldonville Community Center, Inc. in Wrentham to offer a summer nature program for preschoolers. If you are looking for an outdoor experience for your 3-5 year old child, this may be the program for you. We are offering both morning and afternoon, one-week sessions. The cost of the program is $112 per session. Classes are taught by Stony Brook staff at the Little Red Schoolhouse facilities. Times: 9:15am - 11:45am & 12:45pm - 2:45 pm

Shutterbugs Ages 8-11 July 8-129:00am- 3:30pm Fee: $295m/360nmHave you ever wanted to learn how to take great photos outdoors? Come join us for this fun-filled week of hiking and photographing. Learn the basics of photography while learning about nature. We will explore the sanctuary, all the while seeking out interesting subjects for our photo show. Participants will need to bring their own digital camera for this week. Price includes materials fee.

Kingfisher Quest Ages 9-10 August 12-16 9:00am- 3:30pm (with optional overnight Thurs.) Fee: $262m/327nmLong ago, before Boris the Bullfrog, there was another....Join in this grand quest spanning the Sanctuary as we seek this ancient closing circle talisman. Work cooperatively to solve riddles. Locate hidden clues, piece together perplexing puzzles and use your natural history knowledge to find where the “craven avian” is hidden. “Stand alone and the talisman will remain forever obscured. Stand together and triumph!”This program includes an optional overnight Thursday evening. Campers may stay overnight or leave after the night hike at 9:30pm and return Friday morning.

Wilderness Skills Ages 11 - 13 August 5-99:00am- 3:30pm (with optional overnight Thursday)Fee: $269m/334nmHave you ever been lost in the woods? Spent a night outsidewithout a tent? Started a fire without matches? By the end of the week, campers will have learned the basics of planning awilderness adventure, shelter building, fire starting, outdoorcooking, orienteering, wilderness safety and more! Their newskills will be put to the test on an overnight campout Thursday night Don’t forget to bring your positive mental attitude! This program includes an optional overnight Thursday evening. Campers may stay overnight or leave after the night hike at 9:30pm and return Friday morning.

Outdoor Leadership Camp July 29 – Aug 2Ages 13-15 Fee: $300m /$365nm9:00am - 3:00pm plus Thursday evening until 10:00pm

Do you have what it takes to be a leader? Challenge yourselfto find out! Work on your leadership skills while having funwith other teens! Together you will enjoy powerful leader basedinitiatives as well as time-honored camp activities. You’ll design and execute a community service project, visit some other sanctuaries and develop kid-friendly nature activities that will help you to succeed as a Counselor-in-Training (CIT). Stay until 10:00pm on Thursday evening to enjoy a meal and campfire with the staff.

Counselors in Training (CIT) Application required.The CIT program provides an opportunity for teens and young adults to experience camp and receive leadership guid-ance and training, while acting as volunteer assistants to day camp counselors. This program is for youth ages 15-17 who are interested in learning about leadership and working with children. Teenagers are invited to experience the fun, stress, and rewards of camp as they assist Stony Brook Camp Counselors. CITs are expected to participate in the overall planning and implementation of weekly activities such as crafts, nature projects, camp songs and games. Our CITs learn valuable job training and leadership skills as they work side by side with Counselors. The responsibilities given to CITs will help sculpt them into responsible adults and future stewards of our community. CIT application deadline is May 24, 2013. You must be at least 15 years old to be considered for a CIT position.There is a $50 processing, background check and training fee to become a CIT.

Our staff’s enthusiasm for the natural world is contagious and quickly spreads to the campers. Marla Cohen has been Camp Director since the 2002 summer season and has worked as an environmental educator since 1990. A majority of the counselors are undergraduate students majoring in education or environmental science and are selected for their maturity and experience working with children in outdoor settings. This combination of youth and experience generates a highly motivated and vibrant atmosphere.

All counselors are trained in First Aid and CPR. The Camp Director is certified in Emergency Response and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Prior to the beginning of camp, all staff participate in a week-long training session that includes program preparation and health and safety guidelines.

As an ACA accredited camp, Stony Brook’s camp program meets both the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and American Camping Association standards for its program, staffing, counselor/camper ratios, health and safety policies, site and facilities, and administration. Summer Camp Registration FormCAMP REGISTRATIONS are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. You may register by telephone, mail or in person. For identity safety assurances, fax and e-mail submissions are not accepted.

A NONREFUNDABLE, NONTRANSFERABLE DEPOSIT of $50.00 per child per camp week is due with each registration form.

A CONFIRMATION LETTER & CAMP PACKET will be sent to you upon receipt of your deposit. Included in this packet are your HEALTH FORMS which must be completed by June 1st, 2013. This is the only information that you will receive prior to camp. Pleasesavethisflierandyourcamppackettorefertoduringtheapplicationprocess.

DEADLINE NOTICE: All forms (health, doctor, medication, waiver, and release) and the balance of your fee are due no later than June 1st, 2013. A$25latefeepercamperisautomaticallyaccruedforanyformsand/orpaymentsreceivedafterJune1st.Registrations made after June 1 are to be paid in full and all forms to be filled out at the time of registration.

REFUND POLICY: If you cancel for any reason prior to the beginning of your child’s scheduled camp session, the amount of the tuition refunded will be determined by the following: 90+ days refunded in full less the deposit, 30-90 days 50% refund less the deposit, refunds will not be provided for cancellations occurring within 29 days prior to the beginning your child’s scheduled session date for any reason including absent days and sick days. All cancellations must be received in writing.

BUDDY REQUESTS: When requested on the registration form, one same-age buddy request per camper will be honored if possible. Both campers must request each other in the space provided on their registration form.

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDING is available. Stony Brook offers partial and full scholarships dependent upon need and available funds. Please contact the Camp Director, Marla Cohen, by April 15th 508-528-3140 ext. 122 for an application.

CAMP TIMES: Parents will be charged a $15 late fee for every fifteen minutes they are late picking up their child (see times with camp descriptions).

CAMPER EXPECTATIONS: Due to the outdoor and exploratory nature of our camp program, campers must be able to move about on uneven terrain. Campers are expected to meaningfully participate in age-appropriate activities, including nature study. All campers must follow stated behavior expectations and safety rules. Camp Director reserves the right to dismiss a camper when, in his/her judgment, the camper’s behavior interferes with the rights of others, the smooth functioning of the group or activity, or violates the camp’s principles of conduct.
