Preface

Product OverviewThe Sun StorageTek™ Virtual Tape Library™ (VTL) Plus is a scalable disk-based virtual tape appliance that significantly reduces data backup and recovery times by eliminating the backup and restore issues associated with physical tape.

VTL Plus acts as a high-speed cache for tape libraries, presenting SAN clients (backup servers) with a pool of virtual tape resources that can be deployed, managed, and monitored from a single point through a simple user interface.

Because VTL Plus uses disk to back up data, it eliminates the media and mechanical errors that can occur with physical tapes and drives. Virtual tape cartridges can be securely replicated to a remote appliance for disaster recovery and exported to physical tape for long-term vaulting. And since VTL Plus emulates more tape drives than a physical tape library has, more backup streams can run simultaneously, enabling users to easily finish backups within allotted windows.

Additionally, VTL Plus integrates into existing storage environments without requiring operational changes, allowing users to consolidate management and provisioning of backup resources, share tape devices across backup applications, and add new workloads without affecting existing tape configurations.

The VTL Plus product line is comprised of three distinct models:

■ VTL1140 is designed for smaller configurations with lower connectivity and throughput needs.

■ VTL2540 is designed for medium-to-large configurations with higher connectivity and throughput needs, and can be upgraded to a VTL3540 model as needed.

■ VTL3540 is designed for configurations where high availability1 and high performance are key requirements.

For more information, see the Virtual Storage Guide on the Sun Global Sales and Services Support Center website at http://xmen.east/.

1. Dual-active servers in VTL3540 provide redundant protection against component failures, whereby any server-level failure triggers the automatic transfer of fibre channel devices to the second server.

Note – The Configuration Planning, Order Planning, and Implementation and Integration Planning processes defined below are the responsibility of Sun Sales and Sun Professional Services, and are outside the scope of this document. This document primarily addresses the Site Planning and Delivery and Installation Planning processes defined below, which are the responsibility of the Customer Services organization.

Pre-installation planning is designed to ensure that all essential elements and tasks required for successful installation, implementation, and integration of a VTL Plus solution are identified, managed, and completed before the equipment is delivered to the customer site

Pre-installation planning can be divided into five distinct subprocesses, as follows:

■ Configuration Planning – analyzes customer requirements and finds a VTL Plus configuration to meet those needs; for more information, see Best Practices For Designing Backup Solutions That Include Virtual Tape Library on the Sun STK Engineering website at http://wil.stortek.com/tools/techdocs/bestpractices.2006.4.3.pdf.

■ Order Planning – ensures that all required hardware, software, cabling, and options are correctly entered into the Sun order database, and are scheduled for delivery.

■ Implementation and Integration Planning – defines a plan for post-installation configuration, testing, and certification of the VTL Plus solution hardware and software; coordinates personnel training; and defines systems integration and data migration plans.

■ Site Planning – evaluates the site infrastructure and completes needed tasks and upgrades to ensure the installation site meets the power, data-handling, and environmental requirements of VTL Plus solution equipment

■ Delivery and Installation Planning – manages the transfer of VTL Plus equipment between the delivery dock and datacenter to ensure timely installation of the solution.

Successful pre-installation planning will accomplish these tasks: ■ Ensure the proposed VTL Plus solution design meets all customer requirements and

expectations, and that it is ordered, delivered, installed, implemented, and integrated into the customer’s datacenter environment with as little disruption as possible

■ Define a schedule of key events and task completion dates for preparing the site infrastructure, and for installing, implementing, and integrating the VTL Plus solution

■ Promote timely identification and addressing of problems related to the installation, installation, and implementation of the VTL Plus solution

■ Ensure that key customer personnel are available and trained to assist in all phases of pre-installation site readiness planning, as well as installation, implementation, integration, and post-installation servicing and support for the VTL Plus solution.

Site Point-to-Point AccessibilityThe following site conditions must be verified to ensure that a VTL Plus cabinet can be transported between the delivery dock, staging area, and data center installation area without encountering dimensional restrictions, obstructions, or safety hazards, or exceeding rated capacities of lifting and loading equipment and facilities:

■ Dimensions of elevators, doors, hallways, etc. must be verified as sufficient to allow loading and passage of a VTL Plus appliance cabinet in its shipping container. See “VTL Plus F40 Cabinet Specifications” on page 50 for more information.

■ Elevators must have adequate rated capacity to lift the heaviest packaged and fully-populated VTL Plus cabinet (556 kg / 1224 lbs), a pallet jack (allow 100 kg / 220 lbs), plus two persons to move the cabinet (allow 200 kg / 440 lbs), or a total capacity of approximately 806 kg (1887 lbs). See “VTL Plus F40 Cabinet Specifications” on page 50 for more information.

■ All access ramps at the customer site must have an incline not greater than 10 degrees (176 millimeters per meter / 2.12 inches per foot) to prevent tipover of the VTL Plus cabinet(s) during transit.

■ Flooring along the transit path of the appliance from the dock area to the data center installation area must meet the requirements described in “Floor Loading” on page 42.

Data Center SafetySafety is of primary importance when planning a VTL Plus appliance installation, and is reflected in such choices as where equipment will be located, the rating and capability of electrical, HVAC, and fire-prevention systems that support the operating environment, and the level of personnel training. Requirements of local authorities and the insurance carrier will drive decisions as to what constitutes appropriate safety levels in a given environment.

Occupancy levels, property values, business interruption potential, and fire-protection system operating and maintenance costs also should be evaluated. The Standard for the Protection of Electronic Computer/Data Processing Equipment (NFPA 75), the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), and local and national codes and regulations also can be referenced to address these issues. See “Customer Responsibilities” on page 27 for more information.

Sun employees and approved service providers are obliged to install all system equipment in accordance with local, national, and international codes and regulations.

Page 38: StorageTek Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Plus Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Plus VTL1140 – VTL2540 – VTL3540 Installation Planning and Readiness Guide Part Number: 96266 Revision: B

Fire PreventionThe following fire-prevention guidelines should be considered in the construction, maintenance, and use of a data center:■ Store gases and other explosives away from the data center environment.■ Ensure data center walls, floors, and ceilings are fireproof and waterproof.■ Install smoke alarms and fire suppression systems as required by local or national codes, and

perform all scheduled maintenance on the systems.■ Install only shatterproof windows, in code-compliant walls and doors.■ Install readily-accessible emergency power-off switches; see “Emergency Power Control”

below for more information.■ Install carbon dioxide fire extinguishers for electrical fires and pressurized water

extinguishers for ordinary combustible materials.■ Provide flame-suppressant trash containers, and train personnel to discard combustible waste

only into approved containers.■ Observe good housekeeping practices to prevent potential fire hazards.

Emergency Power ControlIt is recommended that source power to the computer room be controlled with room emergency power disconnect switches to allow immediate disconnection of electrical power from all equipment. One switch should be installed near each principal exit door in a data center so that the power-off system can be quickly activated during a fire or other emergency evacuation situation. The disconnect should be tied to the facility fire suppression system. Consult local and national codes to determine exact requirements for this system.

Site Power Distribution SystemsThe following elements of the site power distribution system should be evaluated when planning an installation of VTL Plus appliance equipment.

Power System DesignA properly installed power distribution system is required to ensure safe operation of VTL Plus equipment. Equipment should be supplied from a power circuit separate from the one used for lighting, air conditioning, and other electrical systems.

Note – A typical input power configuration (FIGURE 1-1 on page 37) is either a five-wire high-voltage type or four-wire low-voltage type, with three-phase service coming from a service entrance or separately-derived source, and with overcurrent protection and suitable grounding. A three-phase, five-wire distribution system provides the greatest configuration flexibility, since it allows power to be provided to both three-phase and single-phase equipment.

Transient Electrical Noise / Power Line DisturbancesReliable AC source power free from interference or disturbance is required for optimum performance of VTL Plus equipment. While most utility companies provide power that can properly operate system equipment, equipment failures and other problems can be caused when outside (radiated or conducted) transient electrical noise signals are superimposed on power provided to equipment.

Additionally, while VTL Plus appliances are designed to withstand most common types of power line disturbances with little or no effect on operations, extreme power disturbances (such as lightning strikes), or large switching loads (such as air conditioning motors, elevator motors, and factory loads) can cause circuit overloading, leading to equipment power failures or errors if steps are not taken to mitigate such disturbances.

To mitigate the effects of outside electrical noise signals and power disturbances and prevent damage to VTL Plus equipment, data center source power panels should be equipped with a transient electrical grounding plate similar to that shown in FIGURE 1-2, and the electrical power supplied to VTL Plus cabinets should be from an external, independent power source isolated from large switching loads.

AC Source Power InputVoltage and frequency ranges at AC source power receptacles that will supply power to VTL Plus cabinets must be measured and verified to meet the specifications defined in TABLE 1-2.

TABLE 1-2 VTL System Input (Source) AC Power Requirements

VTL Plus appliance cabinets have a redundant power distribution architecture designed to prevent disruption of operations from single-source power failures. To enable this capability, the two cabinet power cables must be connected to separate, independent AC power sources that are unlikely to fail simultaneously (e.g., one side to local utility power, the other side to an uninterruptible power supply). Connecting both cabinet power cables to a single power source will not enable this capability. For more information, see “VTL Plus Power Connectors and Specifications” on page 51, and refer to the F40 Cabinet Users Guide.1

Equipment GroundingFor safety and ESD protection, VTL Plus equipment must be properly grounded. PDU cables contain an insulated green/yellow grounding wire that connects the cabinet frame to the ground terminal at the AC source power outlet. A similar insulated green or green/yellow wire ground, of at least the same diameter as the phase wire, is required between the branch circuit panel and power receptacles used for connecting each VTL Plus cabinet.

HVAC and Environmental RequirementsData center cooling and air-handling systems must have sufficient capacity to remove heat generated by VTL Plus equipment and from data center personnel. Raised-floor areas should have positive under-floor air pressure to facilitate airflow. Additionally, when conditions within a data center change (for example, when new equipment is added or existing equipment is rearranged), airflow checks should be done to verify sufficient airflow.

For optimal performance, VTL Plus equipment should be operated at the nominal levels defined in “VTL Plus Environmental Specifications” on page 49. The customer is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the computer room to stay within acceptable limits to prevent adverse impact on equipment performance and reliability. Operating computer equipment for extended periods of time at or near the temperature or humidity extremes is known to significantly increase the failure rate of hardware components. If the customer requires assistance in analyzing the computer room environment, contact Sun Professional Services.

Air Filtering RequirementsAir supplied to and circulated within a computer room / data center and underfloor plenums must pass through a mechanical or electrostatic filter. Recommended filter effeciency ratings and terms are defined in accordance with the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), ASHRAE Standards 52-76 and 62.

Ambient Environmental HazardsComputer equipment in general, including VTL Plus equipment, is sensitive to corrosion, vibration, and electrical interference in enclosed environments such as data centers. Because of this sensitivity, equipment should not be located near areas where hazardous and/or corrosive materials are manufactured, used, or stored, or in areas with above-average electrical interference or vibration levels. If VTL Plus equipment must be located in or near adverse environments, additional environmental controls should be considered (and implemented where practicable) to mitigate those factors prior to installation of equipment.

Electrostatic DischargeStatic electricity (electrostatic discharge, or ESD) can be caused by movement of people, furniture, and equipment. Besides causing discomfort to personnel, ESD can damage circuit card components, alter information on magnetic media, and cause other equipment problems. The following steps are recommended to minimize ESD potential in the data center:

■ Provide a conductive path from raised floors to ground.■ Use floor panels with nonconducting cores.■ Maintain humidity levels within recommended control parameters.■ Use grounded anti-static work mats and wrist straps when working on system equipment.

Equipment Layout / Floor Space PlanningFloor space and system layout requirements can differ for each VTL Plus configuration. The floor area at the installation site must strong and stable enough to support the combined weight of one or more fully populated cabinets and associated equipment, sufficient space for installing, operating, and servicing the appliance, and sufficient ventilation to provide a free flow of air to the cabinet(s).

Equipment layout considerations may include, but are not limited to: available space in the data center; required service clearances; intended applications for the equipment; equipment priority assignments; visibility of equipment from the host system console; operator convenience; cable lengths; and future expansion plans. FIGURE 1-3 shows dimensions and recommended service clearances for a VTL Plus appliance in an F40 cabinet.

VTL Plus cabinets can be placed next to each other, without space between them, since there are no side clearance requirements. However, if access is desired for removal of side panels, allow approximately 60 cm (2 ft) of space on each side. Refer to the F40 Cabinet Users Guide for additional information; see “Supporting Documentation” on page 15 for details on how to obtain that publication.

Floor LoadingThe structure of the computer room / data center at a site must be capable of supporting the weight of all equipment, cabling, raised flooring, and personnel in the service area.

Caution – Exceeding recommended raised-floor loads can lead to a floor collapse, which could cause severe injury, death, or equipment damage. It is advisable to have a structural engineer perform a floor-load analysis before installing VTL Plus equipment.

Floor Stress Reduction During InstallationWhen being moved during the installation process, a VTL Plus cabinet creates roughly twice the floor load as a static cabinet. To reduce floor load and stress when moving a cabinet (and the commensurate potential for damage or injury), use 19 mm (0.75 in) plywood on top of the floor along the path where a cabinet will be moved.

Overall Raised Floor LoadingSun recommends use of raised flooring with an overall (superimposed) floor load rating of 490 kg / m2 (100 lbs / ft2). If the floor load does not meet this rating, the customer must consult with a structural engineer or qualified building inspector to calculate the actual floor load and determine if the weight of VTL Plus equipment can be safely supported by the existing construction. The raised floor system in any data center used for VTL Plus equipment must be able to resist the forces shown in TABLE 1-3.

TABLE 1-3 Raised Flooring Horizontal Force ChartSeismic Risk Zone Horizontal Force (V) Applied at Top of Pedestal

1 13.5 kg / 29.7 lbs

2A 20.2 kg / 44.6 lbs

2B 26.9 kg / 59.4 lbs

3 40.4 kg / 89.1 lbs

4 53.9 kg / 118.8 lbsNote: Horizontal forces are based on the 1991 Uniform Building Code (UBC) Sections 2336 and 2337, and assume minimum operating clearances for multipleVTL cabinets. Installations in areas not covered by the UBC should be engineered to meet seismic code provisions of the local jurisdiction.

Raised Floor Panel LoadingRaised floor panels must be capable of supporting a concentrated load of 454 kg / 6.45 cm2 (1000 lbs / in2) anywhere on the panel, and a rolling load of 181 kg (400 lbs) anywhere on the panel, with a maximum deflection of 2 mm (0.08 in) with load applied to the center of the panel edge. Perforated floor panels are not required for VTL Plus equipment, but if used must also comply with the load ratings noted above.

Raised Floor Pedestal LoadingRaised floor pedestal assemblies must be able to resist an axial load of 2268 kg (5000 lbs) without deformation. The pedestal must be admered to the subfloor to resist a side force of 9 kg at 45.7 cm (20 lbs at 18 in) or the equivalent of 40.7 Newton-meter (30 ft-lbs) applied horizontally without the floor tile panels or stringers installed. The lateral stability of raised floors in areas of high earthquake activity must also be considered.

Floor ConstructionVTL Plus equipment is designed to operate in a conventional raised-floor computer room environment or on a solid floor using computer room cooling. Carpeted surfaces are not recommended since these hold dust and contribute to the buildup of potentially damaging static charges. Raised flooring is preferable because it permits power receptacles and cabling to be located safely away from floor traffic and other potential floor-level hazards.

A raised-floor system should consist of removable panels or panels on a stringer grid system, supported by adjustable steel pedestal assemblies. Sun recommends that the raised floor be constructed of fire-retardant wood. The purpose of a raised floor system is to:

■ Allow for future layout changes with minimum cost■ Protect interconnecting power and data cables and power receptacles■ Provide a safer working environment for personnel■ Permit space between floors to supply conditioned air to the solution equipment■ Support the total weight of the solution equipment and service area loading.

Subfloor and Raised Floor DrainageSubfloors and raised floors must have adequate drainage to prevent flooding and trapping of water beneath electronic equipment. In raised-floor environments, the subfloor must have adequate drainage to prevent flooding and trapping of water beneath the raised floor.

Raised Floor HeightRaised flooring should be high enough to allow underfloor routing of cables and specified airflow levels to air intakes for VTL Plus equipment. The recommended minimum floor clearance is 30.5 cm (12 in). An additional 7.6 cm (3 in) should be allowed for cables and connectors. A floor clearance of 61 cm (24 in) is recommended for new construction.

Raised Floor Panel ConstructionMost raised floors are composed of 61 cm (24 in) square floor tiles. The maximum panel size should not exceed 91.5 cm x 61 cm (36 in x 24 in). The panels should have a flame spread rating of 15 or better when tested according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard E84.

Additional Raised Floor Panel SupportAdditional raised floor panel support pedestals may be required to restore the structural integrity and maintain the loading capacity of any panels that have been cut for airflow, cable routing, service access, or other purposes. Non-stringered raised floors may also require lateral support to prevent floor tile movement. Sun recommends that customers consult with a structural engineer to ensure the structural integrity of all raised panel flooring.

Raised Floor Stringers ConstructionStringers in the raised floor system must be capable of supporting a concentrated load of 91 kg (200 lbs) at the center of the span, with a permanent set not to exceed 0.25 mm (0.01 in).

Cabling Safety at Floor Tile CutoutsIn compliance with the Standard for the Protection of Electronic Computer/Data Processing Equipment (NFPA 75), sharp edges must be eliminated from all floor cutouts where cables pass. For wood or similar core material, all cut edges must be covered with metal or plastic clips, grommets, or other protective edging so that none of the core is exposed.

all 4 ports must be used as Target ports)• 2 ports for connecting to Initiators, or for connecting as addi-

tional Targets (requires additional license purchase)• Optional third HBA; its 4 ports can be used for connecting as

additional Targets (if licensed), or to Initiators

VTL2540 Minimum 2 HBAs / 8 ports(Maximum 5 HBAs / 20 ports)

• 4 ports for connecting to one or two 6994 disk controllers• 4 ports for connecting as Targets (included in base license; not

all 4 ports must be used as Targets, in which case they may be used as Initiators to physical tape, or for other purposes)

• Optional third, fourth, fifth HBAs; the 4 ports per card can be used for connecting as Targets (if licensed) or as Initiators

VTL3540

Minimum 3 HBAs / 12 ports on V40z #1(Maximum 7 HBAs / 28 ports on V40z #1)

____________

Minimum 3 HBAs / 12 ports on V40z #2(Maximum 7 HBAs / 28 ports on V40z #2)

• 4 ports for connecting each V40z to each 6994 disk controller• 4 ports for connecting as Targets (included in base license; not

all must be used as Target ports, in which case they may be used as Initiators to physical tape, or for other purposes)

• 4 for use as Failover ports, in case any of the 4 Target ports fail on the other V40z

• Any unused Target or Failover ports can be used as Initiators.• Optional fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh HBAs can be added to

each V40z; the 4 ports per card can be used for connecting as Targets (if licensed) or as Initiators

> Note: For each Target port added to a V40z, the other V40z used for Failover must have a corresponding port assigned as a Failover for that Target. Example: If you add a HBA to a V40z to gain 4 Target ports, you must also add a HBA to the other V40z so its 4 ports are available for Failover.

> Note: Each V40z can be configured with 4 ports for connect-ing to a 6994 disk controller (8 ports on 2 servers), 8 ports for connecting as Targets (if licensed), 8 ports for Failover, and 4 ports for connecting as Initiators. These configurations can be adjusted to meet customer requirements, but ideally all ports in the first V40z will be configured to match the second V40z.

> Note: Adding more Initiators for back-end disk connections requires a second 6994 disk controller. The base configuration fills up all available ports on the first 6994 disk controller.

Note: Target ports are used to connect to FC or SCSI backup servers (SAN clients) to allow access to virtual resources by servers on the storage area network (SAN). Initiator ports are used to connect to back-end physical tape devices and disk devices.

Notes:• When ordering cables, it is recommended that you add a ‘service loop’ of at least 4.6 meters (15 feet) of extra cable to each end of

the measured cabinet-to-host device length to allow the cabinet to be moved as needed for servicing, data center reconfigurations, etc. Extra cabling can be stored inside the appliance cabinet or on the data center floor beneath the cabinet, but should not be stored in an under-floor cable trough. If you are in doubt as to where to store extra cabling, consult with the data center manager.

• All VTL Plus Ethernet cables are plenum-rated, and can be used for under-floor and riser applications. Plenum-rated cables have fire-retardant coating that prevents release of toxic gases and smoke in case of fire, and can withstand significantly higher tempera-tures than non-plenum-rated cables, thereby allowing routing through HVAC ductwork as needed.

Data Cable LabelingLabels for Ethernet and fibre channel (FC) data cables are designed to help you know both end points for a cable without having to trace it around other cables, devices, or other obstacles. Labels are placed on both ends of each cable when the appliance is built. All data cables should arrive pre-attached within each cabinet. For multiple-cabinet configurations, the cable end closest to Cabinet 1 is attached, and the rest of the cable is coiled and stored within the cabinet, ready for you to connect its loose end following the label coding.

The following abbreviations are used for data cable labeling:

■ R1 = Rack 1 (range is R1-R4)■ U1 = first ‘U’ position in the F40 cabinet (counting from bottom to top; range is U1-U40)■ CTRL-A = Control module A on a 6140 or 6994 disk controller (for fibre channel cables)■ CTRL-B = Control module B on a 6140 or 6994 disk controller (for fibre channel cables)■ ETH0 = Ethernet port 0 (bge0) on a V40z server■ ETH1 = Ethernet port 1 (bge1) on a V40z server■ U40 = 3COM fabric switch (in the top-most [U40] space of a 40U cabinet)■ LWR-CTRL = Lower-position 6994 disk controller■ UPR-CTRL = Upper-position 6994 disk controller■ MGMT1 = management port 1 (on a V40z server)■ P1 = Port 1 on a V40z HBA or appliance Ethernet switch (range is P1-P16)
